News about a third film in the Linklater/Hawke/Delpy collaboration has surfaced.
BEFORE SUNRISE, BEFORE SUNSET, AFTER SUNSET?
I really think it'd be a missed opportunity for these three not to get together and give Jesse and Celine one final moment in time together. So, I'm hoping that the bit from Hawke about a summer start for the film isn't just wishful thinking on his part; as with the other two movies, they could really end up with something special.
I came to the series with Before Sunset, and then went back and watched the first. These are some of my favorite all time films, touching, simple and beautiful, and I'd love the chance to check back in with Celine and Jesse. I hope he's left his baggage behind in America and we find that he never did catch that plane. Perhaps now he and Celine are together in Paris, living it up, or we see them on vacation in Australia or Japan or Hawaii. I want this sequel, if it happens, to be in real time as well like the last one.
It won't seem quite right if they've just been together happily since the last one. Then again, maybe doing something really different is the only way this will be worth messing with the perfect ending to Sunset. I don't know, but both movies are great, so I'm down for Before Perihelion in whatever form it takes.
Before Perihelion would be a great name for the fourth movie, which picks things up 200 years later on NASA's research base on the surface of Mercury, where Jesse and Celine's preserved brains are defrosted and plugged into a supercomputer for a digital heart to heart.
