THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN post release discussion

This just came out here in Japan.

I really enjoyed this, it was about as good as you can expect a big modern tentpole movie to be...light years ahead of the usual Marvel stuff (dunno about Avengers, not out here yet).
I enjoyed it more than Raimi-Spiderman 1 and 3, and probably about the same as 2. It was emotionally involving, and pretty fast paced; the story was always moving along in a meaningful way. The cast was terrific...Garfield was believable and appealing as a slightly more edgy Peter Parker. The big advantage he has over Tobey Maguire is his physicality as Spiderman...the new Spiderman seems quicker and more powerful, and Garfield's athletic frame matches that choice.
Emma Stone was awesome. Both strong and cute and much easier on the eye than The Dunst. The relationship between her and Peter was the best thing in the film. Martin Sheen, Dennis Leary, Rhys Ifans; all very good. Sally Field as Aunt May was the weakest link I guess; not a bad performance, by any means, just not particularly outstanding.

The overall tone is a good balance between drama and fun. The Uncle Ben / Spidey Origin stuff does feel familiar, but there's enough new stuff - the relationship between Peter and Gwen, the back-story of Peter's parents, and the Lizard's story - to make the movie feel fresh enough. The climax of the movie is satisfying, and there's even a nice moment reminiscent of the train scene in Spiderman 2 where the general public reach out to support our hero.

Apart from the feeling of familiarity in the first half, the only other complaint I had was that the Lizard's intentions toward the end of the film were not particularly convincing. His plans for New York didn't really resonate with his character. But these gripes are pretty minor in the scheme of things. This was a good movie.

Random thoughts:

- Stan Lee's cameo was very fun!

- The score was OK I guess. I prefer Horner's Spiderman theme to Elfman's rather sad-sack theme.

- Peter Parker uses Bing??

- The film looks pretty good; more real-world than Raimi's Spiderman. I liked the first-person Spidey shots scattered through the movie.

- The special effects are pretty solid. Swinging Spidey is much more believable this time. The Lizard is menacing enough, but he does suffer a bit from the usual CG artificiality.

- The 3D was good. Maybe the glasses have got better, but the movie didn't even seem especially dark.

- Mechanical Web shooters: no problem in my book.

Psh. This probably isn't very good. You're obviously a plant.

I would rather watch

Disney's "People Like Us," a heartwarming film about togetherness, friendship and family!

Starring Chris Pine, one of the hottest leading men in showbiz! With, Elizabeth Banks, Olivia Wilde, and the great Michelle Pfeiffer!

Rated PG-13. Parental guidance suggested for anyone under the age of thirteen.

Reports said that Uncle Ben's death would be modernized and I predicted that a flash mob, organized by Peter, would trample him to death.  Was I right?

Because car jackings don't happen anymore.....guys did you know we solved car jacking?!

Well it was really easy to spot them because they all dressed like car-jackers.

Somehow you're all WORSE comedians than Peter Parker.

Not an insult.  A fact.

Glad to see the same tone has carried over into the post-release.  Glad you had a good time with it, OP.  Hoping for the best.

The fucks with the hostility in here? Over a fucking spider-man film of all things.

No, incorrect; Peter unfriends Uncle Ben on facebook and the shock kills him.

Let's ease down a little. Save the discussion when it actually opens next week.

Nah, let's keep shitting all over it.

No kidding.

Freeman, dude, do you own Sony stock?

Marc Webb and Andrew Garfield are big boys. I bet they can take it.

Probably making Sally Field cry a little, though. Eat shit, Gidget.

No, I'm just annoyed with the RELENTLESS snark for this flick.

So you DO own Sony stock?

I mean, it's not that RELENTLESS for anyone else, since, y'know, none of us MADE the movie.

He gets gang raped?

Have not heard a good word on this film from those I know who've seen it.

I wonder why the word is better overseas then.

That is weird.  Are all the reviews so far the UK screening?

To be fair...it's overseas.

I think I'm missing something with that joke.  Is death via gangbangs in fashion?

When has it ever NOT been?

Got passes to a screening for the Monday before its release.  So at least I won't be paying for it.  Not in a monetary sense, anyway.

Fuck you, dude. Know what Robin Williams put her through!

Jesus, the hostility in this thread.

Also fingers crossed he's right.

I won't be satisfied until Marc Webb is murdered in cold blood.

I've expressed my reasons for being annoyed with this movie being the way it is, and now I'm just ready to let it stand on whatever merits it doesn't crib from Raimi's film. No hostility from me. And like I said in the pre-release thread, if this leads to a proper telling of the Death of Gwen Stacy storyline, all will be forgiven.

I've laughed more at this thread then any in recent memory.  Please keep it up.

Im seeing this tonight....going in with an open mind but somehow I just feel bored already...

That's okay. An open mind. That's all i ask.

Probably the most damning thing I've heard about this so far.

I was waiting for someone to put all the clips and footage together into something semi-coherent.  At 25 minutes long, it feels like the whole movie.

Thought, to be fair, there might be dance sequences we're not seeing.

I saw it. That's about as close as I'm getting to seeing the whole movie.

If I make myself available for a friend to get me into the Drafthouse employee screening, I'll probably see this, but otherwise, despite appreciating Garfield and Stone, paying to see this requires more effort than I'm currently willing to give, lest I hear that it's a genuine and worthwhile accomplishment. I can't give two hours of my life to something deemed "solid" or the dreaded "good for what it is".
I'm definitely gonna pay to see this. Sony needs the money.

Ok so I saw it.... Not as bad as I thought it would be but not essential either.

Despite all the claims of "'The Untold Story" dont be fooled....the first hour is a total remake...

This really held it back from me because most of the second hour is awesome except that after The Avengers and the epic Batman films, Spider-Man fighting the Lizard seems like a major comedown..

It's also very much The EMOzing Spider-Man...so so much angst....

I find it strange that the people who hate SPIDER-MAN 3 and Tobey's dark Peter stuff are all "oh, what's WRONG with Peter having Pattinson hair and riding a skateboard and being a rebel?" about the remake.
