Listen to HarleyQuinn22 go off on The Amazing Spider-Man (before the damn Skype cut her off!)

SONY was behind the cut-off!!!

I had to skip through that, so I missed her on it, but fuck, there are some horrible nasal-voiced nerds complaining about spider-man 3's 'emo peter' again. I can't be doing with that.

Total Emo.

There are a lot of people who are using "emo" to mean "something I don't like."  Because neither Spidey 3 Parker or ASM Parker are anywhere close to being emo.

Dark dancing Peter would use ASM Peter as a toothpick. For reals.

So watched it last night after going back and forth on whether I want to wait for it on Netflix, it's not that bad. Then again, I'm not the hugest fan of Sam's initial Spiderman trilogy (though I do think Spidey 2 was aces) but I was pleasantly surprised on what did work. Andrew and Emma have amazing chemistry with one another and are without a doubt the best thing going in the series. I cannot stress how annoying I find Dunst, and their lack of chemistry killed Sam's films for me. She was just too damn whiny all the time, isn't she supposed to be a bit more lively than that? I agree with people throwing around the world "emo" regarding Parker, uhm, him dancing in the street is far from anything I'd ever see an emo person do. Andrew's Parker was a bit vengeful for me, but it worked with the character in the overall context of this film, something I was deftly worried about. On the other hand, my biggest fear was The Lizard who unfortunately was just poorly realized and comes across like the typical bad guy cannon complete with idiotic bad guy plans to take over the world.

The hardest thing for the film is it's evident TONS was cut out, it seemed really short and quick, never fully getting the time to build to something. I'm still trying to figure out what "untold story" there was supposed to be, because it was slightly intriguing for a second, before you just stopped mentioning it for the last 45 minutes of the film. The action sequences were well done (I did really enjoy the city helping him out in the end moreso than Raimi's version) and the dialogue wasn't terrible, I'd say a 7 out of 10. I still hold firm that if this and Sam's films were meshed together just a bit they'd be the perfect Spidey film.

Oh yea, the end credits were just weird, and not sure what type of reaction they expected me to have. A character who I didn't give two shits about in the first place talks to some weird, shadowy guy who vanishes that I don't give two shits about either. Soooo my actual reaction after it ended was simply "that was weird." Please kill off Gwen in the next movie though, let's get some sense of dread in this films finally.

I'd much prefer they keep Gwen alive. Like you said, Emma Stone and Garfield are great together. Not a big fan of "Doom And Gloom" storylines anyway.

Yeah, no need to tell Gwen's groundbreaking, character-defining story.

My understanding of emo, and I'm no expert, is that it built around a style of music that while aggressive in sound, is actually more about adolescent feelings of angst than something cool, like say rebellion. That does seem like the kind of navel-gazing, milquetoast counter-culture (if there even is such a thing anymore) that the Peter of ASM would buy into, frankly. But if I'm off base here, please feel free to enlighten. And let the record show that I did not use the term to describe this film until now, just seeking clarification.

ASM Peter has too much of a sense of humor to be this navel-gazer.  He's downright playful sometimes.  Besides, his parents dumped off in the middle of the night and then vanished.  He's got a little bit of a right to be angsty, even if the film never takes him to the extremes some people want to assign to him based off the trailers.

Which is another reason why they should kill her off because of the undeniable chemistry they have. You'd actually give a shit if they killed her off, as opposed to Bryce in Spiderman 3 (I still don't know why she was even in that film, she's in like 3 scenes). Besides Nolan's films (Dawe's death), comic book films tend to stray from the gritty, real nature of the comics sometimes. I'd love to see that in the middle act and Parker's reaction towards it. Andrew can pull off it off, no problem, dude's got the chops.

She can't die yet, though - she's got to get plowed and impregnated by Norman Osborne first.

I was surprised to find that I could see past the flaws and have a rather enjoyable time with this.  Garfield and Stone sold it for me, especially their awkward exchange in the hallway that felt like a genuine slice of high school for me.

I enjoyed all of the Raimi Spiderman movies, as well as Toby Maguire's performance, but Garfield was a nice breath of fresh air.  He was a nerd, but he wasn't wimpy.. They made him a hipster nerd, which works for me.  It made it more believable when it came time for Peter to throw down as Spiderman.

I also really enjoyed how Spidery used his webbing in this one... repeatedly shutting the door to trap the carjacker, grabbing Gwen's ass to pull her close.. The real Spider-like way he subdues the Lizard during the fight scene in the school, crawling in between his legs  and up his shoulders... I also dug how his webshooters kind of sounded like silenced pistols... but that's probably just me.

The Lizard was... okay.  I've never really liked him as a villain, but meh.. He worked well enough.  I had more of a problem with the constant lizards Peter keeps finding.  Has anyone ever seen a lizard in NYC?  Am I missing something?

I still think they could very plausibly kill Gwen but keep Stone.

Who's that guy defending the movie? Pietro whatever? He's a moron. I don't think you should have him on again.

Pietro's a good dude and entitled to his take on Amazing Spider-Man.

Yes, the correct term for "something I don't like" should be "Hipster".

There must be a scene left on the cutting room floor in which Peter sits in his room, drinking PBR while he listens to The Shins in true hipster form.. all the while complaining about franchise food chains.

Yeah, cause anyone with a different opinion shouldn't be listened to.

I felt compelled to fix that for you.

Jesus, Arcade Fire made me think of Richard Kelly, which in turn made me think that he would've been an awesome director for a Spider-Man film.

It'd be crazier than a dog in a hubcap factory, but it would not be boring. No sir.

I had a sudden bout of asshole and shouldn't have called him a moron. The way he made his arguments just rubbed me the wrong way. Also, I wasn't suggesting that he wasn't entitled to his opinion (And I think that "x entitled to x's opinion" is a terrible defense of an opinion).

Yeah, cause anyone with a different opinion shouldn't be listened to.

I haven't seen the movie. I don't care what his opinion is. It's the way he advanced and defended his ideas about the film.

But my post was horrifically unclear about what my problem with the guy in the podcast was. And I was being an asshole.

Back on topic, Tom Cruise looks like Princess Kate's cheese.

So in retrospect I don't think this movie is going to do very well.  When compared to Raimi's flick it's going to appear small and unfocused and confused, while Raimi's flick feels strong and confident and assured.

Do you mean financially?  Alas, it already has.  (via boxofficemojo)

Budget: $230 million (plus whatever in advertising)

US Domestic Gross:  $160 million

International Gross: $204 million

Total Gross Not Including Today: $364 million worldwide

And this is after only a week or two.  And the only contender this coming week is the new ICE AGE movie.

On the plus side, I like when a Spider-Man movie does well.  On the minus side, these numbers will make Sony think that they were right (that "properties" are script-and-director-proof).

Of course I don't mean financially.  Why would you measure the worth of a movie ten years from now by how much it made?  Will Transformers 3 be remember as the movie that made over a billion or as a crappy bloated movie?

I don't.  But regrettably Sony does.  I'd actually be surprised if Transformers 3 is remembered, artistically, at all.

Man, I must be nuts because I found this really refreshing after Raimi's take. I don't know if it's because I didn't grow up with Raimi or because I don't need heart and cheese pumping through the veins of the movie every 2 seconds, but I really enjoyed this. I thought the origin process was going go come off as taxing but I found its deviations fun. The romance was better, the leads were more enjoyable and the physicality of Spider-Man was far more in line with how it should've been. I really liked seeing a scrawny version of Spider-Man.

Obviously, the movie has its problems (all that have been covered in great detail - the score is pretty uninspired, the weird Power/Responsibility speech), but they didn't seem distracting. His decision to stop pursuing Ben's killer didn't seem as abrupt as everyone made it out to be, nor did I feel like the secret of parents was erratically strewn about (I blame that more on the trailers than the context of the actual film).

I'll agree that it was a weird approach to use the promise/smile at the end but I figure this is them setting up the Gwen Stacy/Goblin scenario, where Peter will have to learn the lesson Captain Stacy tried to warn him about. Many find it insulting but I see it as them setting up his arc and how it will end up paying off in the 3rd while we get MJ introduced.

I'll have a feeling that people will remember this better than you think. Most of the reactions i've read online seem to be fairly positive. They all think that it's better than Spider Man 3 at the very least.

ATTACK OF THE CLONES got multiple five-star reviews when it was released. AVATAR got favourably compared to STAR WARS. Perspective is a helluva thing.

Boxoffice mojo is behind.  It passed 400M on Wednesday.

There's much not to like about S-M3, but you know what's a really good scene? The Peter / Harry fight at Harry's place. It's fast and brutal and I love Peter's pretend-scared "Oooo!"

Regardless of our opinion of it, the reboot is a success by the only measure Sony values (box office revenue). I'm sure video release will only bolster its in-the-black status. With Batman being out of the picture for (presumably) at least 4-5 years, minimum, we'll be seeing a second film from this cast in 2-3 years. A different director seems like a sure bet, but I wonder if they'll spend more on the movie this time (though from all feedback, it's not the effects or production design* that needed bolstering but the script and editing).

*Dislike of Lizard's design notwithstanding.

Not sure it still would be. At the time, the hero not saving the girl was groundbreaking. But after the Dark Knight, it wouldn't seem new to a movie audience that doesn't know the material.

Which is why i think its fine not to go by the comics direction. Do something different. They have the freeplay since audiences understand these are the movies and not the comics.

And like Batman Begins it's going to find a bigger audience on video.
