Speaking of Vampire flicks, how about "Nadja?"

Oh, the joys of taking chances! I was perusing the horror section at my local (independent) video store, when I happened upon a film called Nadja. It looked interesting, so I took a chance and rented it. Wow, what an awesome movie. I'm not going to give any spoilers, but I will say it had some of the coolest photography I've seen in a long time. Apparently, the director used some sort of weird camera to shoot the scenes that show the vampire's point-of-view. A few of the shots actually reminded of something out of a Bergman film, very interesting camera angles and lighting. Although the plot was pretty basic stuff (brother and sister vampires try to come to terms with who and what they are) it is the stunning visuals that make this film such an enjoyable experience. Despite the basic plot, the director did do a nice job of showing the struggle within Nadja (the sister vampire) between her almost-human emotions and her instinctive lust for blood. In addition, we get to see Peter Fonda play a whacked out vampire hunter! This is a film worth checking out.

"There is a hidden song at the center of the earth, and its sound is like razors through flesh."

Love Nadja its a strange little film. Wish I could find this puppy on dvd!! A friend introduced me to the film several years ago. I found the film to be very atmospheric and kinda creepy.

I could not get itno this flick. I really tried to keep an open mind, when I saw that David Lynch was attached, but this movie didn't do it for me.

It was hard not to fall asleep.

Saw this based on the David Lynch Producer credit as well. It was atmospheric but I'm not a huge "artsy" vampire movie guy. Sadly, I watched this and Abel Ferrara's THE ADDICTION the same night. That is a whole lotta artsy vampirism!

I preferred Martin Donovan and Elina Lowensohn in Hal Hartley's non-horror film, AMATEUR (with Isabelle Huppert). Hartley's stilted dialogue and the deadpan performances hit the mark in that film (and SIMPLE MEN and TRUST as well). Great flicks. But I digress...

Actually, NADJA sort of felt like a weird Hal Hartley/David Lynch colloboration, although Hartley had nothing to do with it. Just my two cents.

FYI
I believe the director used one of those PXL Cameras for the vampires point of view. They are those toy cameras that took audio cassette tapes and recorded video with them. Some people call them PixelVision cameras. I think Fisher Price made them, but I'm not sure. Linklater used on in Slacker.
Then again, it could be another vampire art flick I'm thinking of, maybe the The Addiction.

I believe Abel Ferrara "shoots" all of his films with a toy camera in one hand and a syringe in the other. A true auteur.

OUCH

Didn't quite like either film really, and I watched 'em during the height of my vampire interest phase. A lil too arty for me. And the PixelVision camera indeed was the culprit for the grainy shots.

Fango did a story on this and they reported that the director was using the nifty Fisher Price gadet and sadly they were no longer in production.

I'm with Fixxxer. This movie just bored me. Couldn't get into it. I can't even remember it now, just that I was watching it thinking, "Man, this movie is boring me." And I'm usually all up for thoughtful narrative and quiet storytelling.

Maybe it was the cough syrup...
