Sons of Anarchy season 5

Thread Starter

I know we're a couple months away but there's nothing else on TV right now (I know I should get into Breaking Bad).

Anyways, they're filming SoA season 5 right now and tons of news has already come out so I thought we'd start it right now.

Some of the news for this season so far:

Ashley Tisdale is going to guest star for two episodes. She's going to play a high priced female escort.

Jimmy Smits is going to guest star as the leader of a gang. He's supposed to heavily influence Jax and take him down a dark path.

They got some dude from Lost to play Damon Pope.

Any other news that I missed? The season 5 teaser should be coming soon.

What do you think will happen this season? Will Opie rejoin the club? How will Jax do as a leader? How will Jax, Gemma, Tara, Opie and Unser get along with Clay knowing what they know?

I wouldn't be surprised if Gemma ends up trying to help Clay get some power once she sees she's not the "ol' lady" of the club anymore.

Ahh so this is how Tisdale plans to shed that disney image. The Jimmy Smits storyline actually sounds interesting especially after seeing his stint on Dexter.

Perrineau will play Damon Pope? Guess that's alright. Still feel it would have been a no-brainer to get Ving Rhames.

Yeah, I find that I enjoy the show a lot more when I don't actually read that or his Twitter.  The guy is fairly insufferable.

His "saying 'cunt' a lot makes me edgy and badass" blogging style is a nightmare.

YES!! HOLY SHIT I CAN'T FUCKING WAIT!

I am so glad they didn't take out Clay last season. Ron Perlman is too fucking awesome. He needs to stay until the end of the show. When he calls Jax "son" after everything Jax knows now... holy shit. This season is going to be crazy.

Another promo. Damn... when Clay is loading up that gun I wonder who he's going to shoot. This season looks bad fucking ass!

It is good tv show can't wait for next episode. Sons of Anarchy is one of the most incredible television show i have ever seen. The characters are really good, the scenes are great, the storyline is really mind blowing.

Only two more nights!! Already have the DVR set. It's a 90 minute season premiere.

3 minutes in and we're treated to an absolutely terrible bar-rock version of "Higher Ground".  SOA is officially back!

Love this show so much. Very glad it's back. Some pretty brutal stuff tonight.

I was all set to make a snide remark about how the sure sign that you're the antagonist in a crime show is that your response to a gang war is to murder your own top guys.  But once Perrineau actually threw his punches I was suitably impressed.  It's hard to to beat Arkin as far as villains (if that's really the right word), but he looks to top any of the Irish or Mexican guys already.

Holy shit!! What a fucking great episode. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time pretty much. Damn!! This is going to be a crazy season. Let's see if Boardwalk Empire can top this premiere on Sunday.

I don't know about this show. I've been marathon watching the first few seasons to get ready for the new one. I loved the first two (especially the first one) and found them extremely addictive and suspenseful (I'd put them in the same league as "Breaking Bad", which is about the biggest compliment I can give a dramatic series these days), but season three really disappointed me.

I really dug the villains in the first few seasons, but had trouble understanding the motivations of those in season three and felt a lot of it was stretching and padding the main story line for way too long. It got to the point where I couldn't wait for it to end because it started to bore me.

I just started season 4, but I was so bummed out by season 3, I'm almost reluctant to not go on. As far as I can tell, season 3 seems to be unpopular among many fans. Can someone please (honestly) tell me season 4 improves from the season before it?

Season 4 is excellent. Seriously, there was nothing but good things said about season 4 from the majority of the people on here. The actual finale might leave you bummed out a little bit but the season 5 opener will get you back into it. But I think season 4 was easily the best season of the series so far. But going by the season premiere of season 5 I might be changing my mind.

Good start, though the quicker Chuck Zito gets iced the better. Don't need him on this show.

Curious to see why a newly sworn member, or members, are pulling the home invasions.

I thought Ron Perlman was fantastic tonight as a broken down Clay. Again, I find myself knowing that Clay needs to go but hoping that he sticks around until the very last episode of the last season. Ron Perlman is just too fucking good to write off the show.

There were a ton of negative things said about season 4.  It's sort of S3 in inverse, with  bunch of very good stuff throughout followed by a terrible finale.

Season 2 was the peak that the show will apparently never equal.  It's still fun show with a phenomenal cast, but it's wildly uneven in the quality of writing and disappointingly tame in its plotting despite the gonzo violence it dishes out on guest stars.

I'd pretty much agree with this, although I can't remotely be on board with pretending S4 was as bad as S3.  S3 was a wasteland, just complete shit with about 2 cool moments throughout the entire season.  Season 2 is definitely the high point though.  Hard to beat Arkin and Rollins.

I'm curious if Tig comes after Clay now, since Clay has suddenly become indirectly responsible for the death of his daughter.

S4 is definitely better.  3 had two good episodes (premiere and finale), while 4 had many.  But a finale casts an outsized shadow on a serialized show like this, and man that finale was pussified.

Fucking Tig, man.  He can't even get himself killed without a woman accidentally getting offed.

Bad bad stuff went this in this episode.

Tig is gonna murder half of Oakland.

From the trailer it looks as if Opie and Clay actually work together?

If you're going to keep Clay around, forcing him to work with Opie is a must.  Putting half the club on the run one episode in is a good way to do that.  It still bugs me that Jax hasn't told Opie about Clay killing his father/trying to kill his wife as a way to underscore that they're in the same boat but it's that important to keep the IRA deal going.

i can't believe Rachael Miner came back for THAT. I mean it was cool for continuity sake but any girl could have taken that part. Weird how that didn't even really give you a look at her face as if it was another actress and they were trying to hide it.

Anyway that is one hell of a way to open a season.

Lesson learned.  If you are confronted by a crimelord whose daughter you accidentally killed and he says "You know what happens next?" the answer is "I hope to God you kill my daughter in front of me because I've got shit to do".  Screws up his whole plan.

Coates was good, but the scene with that girl getting burned would probably have worked better for me if I wasn't trying to remember who she was to Tig and what her previous story had been. Maybe I'm just desensitized, but I think if they want to set a character on fire and really want you to feel it, it should be someone we're a bit more familiar with.

Or at least make it someone who would be hilarious to watch burning and screaming, such as Unser. LOL I'm such a socio.

strong first episode, it's amazing how fast they put the club back on the run. Thought Perineau as Pope was a little weak.....dude is just too personable to be menacing. Even when killing his own leuitenants and burning people's daughters....he just seems like a nice fucking guy.

Best thing about this episode was the Clayosaurus. How soon till he buys Piney's old ride? Will that be the first Clay/Opie scene?

The Tara/Gemma parallell was great. Tara looking so damn strong n fine, that is a president's old lady. Gemma is a fucking mess, a nice reflection of the wreck Clay has become.

Jimmy Smits was strong, don't like how fast Jax ends up hiding out at the whorehouse....but that is typical Sutter, fuck the logic, I want to put the guys over here with this nex character, so there it is.

Thread Starter

Well they were in a rush to get out of Jax/Tara's place. I'm sure the next episode will have Jax wondering who Nero is and how his mom knows him.

Also, didn't even think about that with Clay possibly buying Piney's old bike. It would make sense. It does seem like Clay might attempt to get Opie back on his side. They need to build Clay back up. It won't feel right to see him go out like this. I hope this season is about Clay getting back into shape and trying to sneak his way to get back at the head of the table. When Clay goes down (which I hope is the final season) he needs to be at near 100% and be that ruthless villain he was in season 4.

Also, the casting of Pope isn't terrible. I think him being so calm makes his character even more evil. You have him in one scene setting Tig's daughter on fire and then in the next he's passing out ice cream to the kids in his community. Though I remember someone on here last year when they talked about who would play Pope in season 5 mentioned Ving Rhames. That would have been a good choice.

I like that they went with a left field choice for Pope. You're expecting a big gangster, and he's much more quietly authoritative. They're going to be walking a fine line with the niners this season, and hopefully it means they'll address some of the racial issues the show has only skimmed over. Making the niners a bunch of big scary black guys wouldn't play, they had to go at it a different angle.

Strong start though I have a feeling Tig won't survive this season.  He'll feel responsible for all the bad shit and go on a suicide mission  to kill Pope.

I loved Sutter going with Perrineau for Pope. It's jarring in a good way. Someone like Rhames would have been a much safer choice in both senses of the word. Whatever ills you can appoint to Sutter I have loved his casting choices so far.

If only he had the balls to kill Clay.

I don't know, turning Clay into Piney could turn out even better than killing him outright.

Plus, it gives them the chance to let him do one more horrible thing to really make Jax regret leaving him alive.

We all know the show can't kill of Perlman until much closer to the end. There's just too much on his shoulders.

Yes. Also I might be crazy but was there just a tad bit of regret in Pope's eyes after he killed the girl?

excellent point. Time and time again this show has kept me around with this amazing cast.....plus I think Jimmy Smits a nice addition. Guess I will reserve my opinion on good old harold for a few more episodes.

I can see it being ambivalent - he may simply been having a moment of sadness for HIS daughter, or he might have been the slightest bit regretful about "having" to kill an innocent person.

As played so far, he seems pretty ruthless, so I'd probably guess it's the former.

Yeah, Clay does need to go but it needs to be at the end. Ron Perlman just brings too much to the show to write him off with 3 seasons left to go. They can kind of take this season to have him do some sneaky things and recover and then next season and season 7 have him get healthy and do some more horrible things and then have the big payoff in the final season.

Right now seeing him become the new Piney is awesome.

Lots of setting up pieces, but they needed to slow down after the premiere anyhow.  They pulled Opie back in too quickly but I'm glad to have him back regardless.  His return does make me concerned for Bobby surviving this season though, as Opie obviously belongs in Bobby's seat next to Jax.

So what documents did the home invasion guys have?  Obviously it was from Clay's safe, but it looked like maybe a marriage certificate?  Even in HD I was having trouble making anything out when I paused it.  The implication was that all of the home invasions were lined up just to get to whatever those pieces of paper contained, right?

Loving the Nero character. "I don't get out a lot" after playing chicken got a chuckle out of me.  It's a shame Jax didn't realize he was likely making a deal with the devil when Nero casually mentioned that maybe Jax could do something for him later.

Edit: My prediction for the prison issue with the boys is that the CIA fails to protect them and they are bailed out by Nero's surviving crew who are all lifers as we found out this episode.  Jax will owe Nero even further.

Edit2: Wait, IMDB says Joel McHale was in this episode.  Did I black out and miss it?

Yes. Although I think there was also a throwaway line last week indicating that Clay thinks the (non-Son) mechanic who got roughed up is fooling around with Jemma.  Which suggests the three Nomads are Clay's secret new goon squad.

That would make a ton of sense.  I could also see Clay telling them to give Unser a thumping.  As last week's episode showed us, Gemma is well aware of where anything in the house is.  She would have noticed if some documents went missing so Clay cooking this up to get to those without raising too much suspicion sounds right.  Maybe Gemma married Clay before JT was dead, or same day?  Something damning for Gemma almost certainly, especially after Clay's speech about doing the one thing right by protecting her.

At this point it's pretty damn clear the goons are Clay's guys. His "appeal" to Opie got him in jail too, so I only figure he's gonna make a move for the club while the others are in jail. He can't ride of course but who knows?

I keep digging the casting a ton. And both Jax and Tara, and Opie and Layla were great.

"I don't know if I love anything" was such a perfect, tragic line and delivered perfectly by Opie.

They still brought him back to the club too quickly.

Loved the second episode.

Smits "I don't get out much" was brilliant as he had Jax ready to launch out of the truck..

I whooped a bit when I saw it was directed by Peter Weller. I almost wanted a quick walk on..

Keep it coming.. I didn't realize how much I had missed it

I figured that would happen too quickly, but I actually think they sold it pretty well with Clay's visit, offering up a minimal-bullshit reminder that leaving the club because of Clay when he is being retired is logically questionable.  Even if Ope should be emotionally done with the whole club by now.  His battered wife syndrome with the club is probably the saddest thing on the show.  It's taken so much from him that he doesn't have anything else to leave it for.

Well I have a 60 inch with high def and I had trouble reading it too but there were actually 2 documents. 1 was indeed a marriage license, I couldn't read who's but im assuming Clay and Gemma. The other was a birth certificate. Again couldn't make anything except Teller I THINK so im guessing Jax. Clay couldn't be Jax's father could he?
