Waiting for the hiring decission

Thread Starter

So, last week I got a call from a job I applied for 4 weeks ago.  I was asked to come in the next day to meet with the Marketing Manager to discuss my interest in the job and to see if I was a good fit.  Interview went very well, and after showing him my portfolio and discussing my qualifications, he said that he was going to talk to the VP and get me in sometime next week for an interview.  He also mentioned that he was going on vacation for the remainder of the week.  This was Tuesday, btw.

Wednesday comes, and I get an email from the VP asking if I could come in either Thursday or Friday to meet with him.  Met with him on Thursday and he was very nice.  He then told me that he had two openings, and asked me what job I would be most interested in.  After going over each job, I decided on continuing with the job I originally applied for.  He told me that he just has to talk with the first guy I interviewed with, but since he was on vacation, he wouldn't be able to get back to me until Monday with his decision.

Now, today is Tuesday.  Still haven't heard anything.  I know the hiring process can take a long time, and the VP I met with is also a partial owner so I can just imagine how busy his schedule is.  Also, with the Marketing Manger just getting back from vacation, he probably has loads to do to get caught up, not to mention this being a holiday week as well.

We talked about pay, benefits and the whole 9 yards when I met with the VP.  They also made mention that I was the only one they are interviewing for this position right now, due to my background, education, and work history.  He said that someone with my qualifications should have no problem getting right into the job.  That this position normally takes 2 years to train for, but I should take less time all things considered.

So, should I just keep on waiting?  Would a email be appropriate, or would that be a little bit pushy at this point.  I am really excited for this job (hate my current job SO MUCH), and am just salivating at the chance to put my 2 week notice in.  And that's also a concern, I figured by him having the interview with me late last week, that was a perfect way for me to give my notice, end my job here on a Friday, and start on a fresh week.

Thoughts?

All things being equal, I'd give it until Thursday before uou contact them. It's a holiday week and it's hard to know what's going on over there...more than likely, a lot of people are taking all or some of the week off and shit has still gotta get done. Cut them some slack for a couple of days before you 'prod' them.

Good luck, by the way!

Thanks!

My only fear is, this position requires me to be very outgoing, and to take initiative.  So, could they be waiting for me to contact them to see how interested I am, and how outgoing I can be?  That's the thing, the VP emailed me right away so I could get in for the interview before the end of the week.  Part of me wants to just send him a quick email just stating that I can make myself available for any more questions they may have.

the VP has only contacted me via email so far, so I think that is his preferred formed of communication right now.

Yeah congrats on how far you have gotten so far.  Good luck!

I would wait. Until Friday morning actually.  With people out and building to a holiday, they may not have their ducks in a row yet.  Promising "we'll get back to you on" is stupid and never accurate.  Personally, I think anything sooner from you is jumping the gun - especially if you are the only candidate as they say.

Well, I went ahead and emailed him.

Got a call back 20 minutes later.  I was right, he wanted to see me show that I wanted the job.

I got the call while I was still at work.  I gave my 2 week notice as I walked out.  Just gave him a piece of paper, a few sentences explaining that I am resigning, and out of walked.  Didn't even wait for him to read it.  Between the constant tantrums he has in his office, and him screwing up my paycheck (not to mention, SKIMMING my hours) it felt good giving him my notice.  Off to better things!  I considered by current job, a job, my new one, I feel like this is my career.

I've had a situation now for over a week where I sent my resume for a job and had a woman email me saying she was on the East Coast but was vetting resumes for this West Coast position and wanted to interview me over the phone the next day.  I said great and said I'd be available anytime.  The next day I got no response to my email and no call, so around 1pm (which would have been 4pm for her) I emailed her a follow up.  I was relieved when I got a response saying she had been busy and wanted to do the call the next day.  Great, I said, once again adding I'd be available any time.  The next day, which was Friday...no call.  Finally I get an email that she once again can't do the call and asked if I was available this Monday, anytime after 11am.  This time I decided to give a time, saying let's do the call at 11am.  She said fine.  Monday comes around.  11am, no call.  12pm, no call.  I sent her an email, and she responded that she had gotten pulled into a meeting and asked if we could do the call at 1pm.  I said great.  1pm, no call.  2pm, no call.  Finally toward the end of the day I got an email saying she once again got busy, asked if we could do the call Tuesday and also asked "is this fun for you?"  I'm like, what the fuck?  I said I understood how things could get and would be happy to have the call Tuesday.  No response to that email and no call or email today.  The fucked up thing is I still don't even know what the company is.  The listing was anonymous.  I sent her an email toward the end of the day saying I assume there once again isn't going to be a call, and asked if the position was still available, adding I'd like to know who the company is.  No response to that but it was past 6 in her time zone.  I mean if this is a test to see how interested I am in the job it's pretty fucked up and tiresome.

Sounds like someone fucking with you for sport, Mike.  Have you checked this person out to ensure that she's legit, because it almost sounds like a prank at this point.

There's your eject button right there. If you've gone through all this for a job opportunity for a company who haven't even told you who they are, that flags their business style as unprofessional at best, and illegal at worst. Besides, all this trauma just to get the interview? Imagine what it might take to get them to actually pay you.

Had an interview today for a training position at my company. It's a much, much more appropriate use of my skills than the hellish call centre monkey job I have now (Which I've gradually realized is doing me more damage mentally than the meager pay allows). I've been waiting for a year for a training position to come up, and now that it has and I've gone for it, and done the interview it kind of scares me how badly I want this. I mean, to the point where if I don't get it I can see myself walking out on the company, dry bank account and lack of backup job be damned.

Well... Maybe I won't go that far. Yet. But to me, I'm in a job I can't stand and is driving me insane, and this is kind of the last opportunity these people have to keep me as an employee. It's the fact that I need this to work out so much that makes me nervous, I guess.

At this point, I think you should share her email.  It's obvious this is either: A) someone fucking with you, B) the most unprofessional company I have ever heard of.

The fact that she hasn't even tried to call you and just touch base is a giveaway that this isn't worth spending anymore time on.  If I had to bet, it's some teenager in his mom's basement fucking around with you.

How did you find out about the position MikeShaynePI?  In the past five years my wife has been laid off a half dozen times.  There were points at which she scoured even Craigslist for jobs. Every damn one of them turned out like this.  They didn't advertise the job correctly, never replied back to her and/or a plethora of other issues.

never do Craigslist.  I tried that a few months ago, and it was all Insurance Scam positions.  Jobs where they call you in, make you get your family to sign a contract for shit insurance policies, then fire you.

Also, the amount of people looking to hire "nude" female models for art projects are freaky.  I don't even want to know what their intention is.

Craigslist is truly a wretched hive, only to be used as a last resort. Of course I totally used it several times during my more desperate periods of unemployment, even managed to grab a couple weak contract positions out of it. But some work is better than no work, I always say.

Two years ago I managed to grab my first paying job in desktop support, doing a PC refresh project for banks around Ohio. Scored the job from a Craigslist listing, which actually managed to list legit company/contact info. The project was hilariously brief, lasted all of 3 goddamn weeks, they then called me sporadically for the occasional PC fix job the rest of the summer. Not the best experience, but I took what I could get.

Last year I landed another contract job, again off a Craigslist listing. Same deal, contract agency put out a listing with actual company info I could investigate myself. Trust me, this is a rarity. Another PC refresh project, this time lasted for 3 months, almost seemed like a real job until the project suddenly ended without warning and I never heard a word from them again.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that you can find work from Craigslist, but.... I wouldn't recommend it.

MikeShaynePI this sounds like you are dealing with an independent recruiter, not an HR person at the company in question. In my experience recruiters are people who are kicked off of used car lots for being too sleazy and dishonest.

And Craigslist yeah. Back in the day (early 2000's) it was the place to look for good Tech related jobs in the Bay Area. Now, it is total shit.

I'd look at GlassDoor.com (which offers reviews of the companies by employees) to vet possibles, and LinkedIn both for Job listings and networking (in this environment you are best off learning about positions from people you know).
