The first viral website for the Robocop remake has hit the internet.

It's like they went to redesign ED-209 and didn't know where/when to stop.

Overly complicated and like a live action Transformer or Battleships, which had an excuse to looking like that due to being aliens.

I think Robocop 2 sums it ups:

The actual presentation is all right though, sickeningly corporate.

Does anyone have a feeling that the new Robocop is going to look like one of those Cylon Centurions?

No they didn't.

I am so bored with every robot/ alien needing to look like it just stepped off a Transformers movie now.  All those little fiddly jagged bits just make the designs look cluttered and overly complex.  God I hope the auto industry doesn't decide to go this route.

the original ED209 conveyed everything it needed to in a very elegant way.  That new one looks like bits are going to fall off of it every time it takes a step.

To be fair though, post-Transformers it's appropriate that the new ED does look like an over-designed piece of crap, because that's exactly what a corporation would assume people want out of their killer robots. At this point it's sort of impossible to separate knowing spoof from genuine bad design, but at the risk of being naively optimistic I"m gonna hope for the former until a trailer proves otherwise.

What gets me that it pretty much follows the original ED-209 design (Especially the legs and feet), but with... bits slapped on.

So what was the point?

I don't see the hate here, it looks ok to me. But then again why do we need a remake in the first place?

Now I want to see this thing getting stuck in doorways and knocking itself over when it catches some ridiculous fin on the side of a building.

That said, I don't think that design is all that outrage-inducing.

Yeah, this looks pretty cool so far.

why are they remaking Robocop 2?

This is one of those damned if you do, damned if you don't flicks.  Like Splatoon said, the redesign of ED-209 makes perfect corporate sense, but if they'd stuck closer to the original design, people would be bitching about this being a lazy remake.  *shrugs*  I like everything I'm seeing so far.  MGM is really treating this remake with respect, with the filmmakers and actors they're hiring, so there's no reason for me to get angry yet.  I'm sure there'll be more bitching when they unveil the redesign of Robo himself.

Oh I think this one has the best shot out of the Paul Verhoeven films that have/are/will be remade.

I'll get over myself about the design. It's just very hard to define some of it.

I wish that was the one getting remade.

Speaking of; ROBOCOP 2 levels of hate from me so far toward this.

Judging by the website I think the satirical intent is still there. It's just that modern satire is a lot drier than it was in the eighties. The company's tagline, "We have the future under control" seems a pretty straightforward riff to me.

Why is it that soo much design work today is ugly as shit? Things in the 80's were beautiful in their simplicity. If this Robocop was being done by Verhoven it would be a DAY ONE ticket for me. But it's clear that it's only being remade because Iron Man was a success and the studio said "HEY, we have the rights to Robocop and that has a guy in a robotic suit, right?!? oh and let's try to make everything look like Bayformers because look how much $$$ that made!"

The thing I find interesting is that even though Transformers has been very successful, I don't think I've ever seen anyone, fans included (and I know some serious fans of the franchise), ever say that they love the design of the Transformers.

MGM had this remake in the cards before Iron Man was even released.
