That fucking sucks.  The man deserved to WIN an Oscar for best actor, not get something honorary.

Venus, Ratatouille and Dean Spanley are all incredible, some of the best stuff he's done in 20 years, and he's never really been out of work. But he looks pretty frail, so I'm glad he'll wind down a bit and enjoy his last few years with family.

*raises glass of port*

Well that's a damn shame, but I gotta respect a guy who calls it quits on his own terms entirely because he feels he's done. Take care, Mr. O'Toole, and thanks for a hell of a lot of great work.

Sucks for us who will be deprived of his work, but great for him if it means he enjoys his twilight years that much more.

Sad news, but not unexpected. When O'Toole returned to the screen in Troy in 2004 his performance was the best part of the film, but his frailty was impossible not to notice. I'm surprised to learn he's only 79. He looks like a much older man. I hope he enjoys his retirement and is having a blast. His film legacy will last forever.

The man's a legend, and like commodorejohn said you have to respect the guy for bowing out gracefully when he knows he's through. He's done immortal work, and deserves to kick back (not that he's really worked in years anyway, so this announcement's no real surprise).

Ollie Reed's gone, O' Toole's retired: so few left to remind the movie stars of today of what pussies they are. Clint better keep quaffing that virgin's blood, because we need him now more than ever.

He's the Stanley Kubrick of Best Actor snubs.

Christopher Plummer is going strong.

Newman bowed out the same way.

THEN HE DIED.

Every time I read a story about O'Toole, my reaction is the same: "Dude's still alive?"

I suppose he looks somewhat older, but he's only 79.

He pickled himself past the point of being able to die by 1979.
