Steam Summer Sale going on now!

Thread Starter

Just picked up Deus Ex Human Revolution for $7.50 (ends in like 30 minutes) and Portal 2 for $5.

Lots of other stuff I want to pick up, but trying to use a little self-control.

That Sega hit collection is really tempting. 71 classic sega games, for $49.99

Also, I'd like general opinion on the telltale collection. Is Back to the Future, Jurassic Park, Puzzle Agent 1 & 2, The Complete tales of Monkey Island and the Walking Dead worth $49.99?

I've heard good things about Puzzle Agent and the Walking Dead, mixed to bad things about Jurassic Park and Back to the Future, and I have not heard anything about the quality of Telltale's Monkey Island stuff.

Just picked up Grimrock, Darksiders and Trine 2, all together for just under 15 bucks. This sale is going to own me, isn't it?

Picked up Rayman Origins for $15. Am semi-tempted to get Trine 2, but the apparent focus on co-op is a bit of a turn-off. I'm still a predominantly single-player kind of guy, and do worry about the balance of games that are co-op-centric.

EDIT: Read some reviews, bought it anyway. Damn you, Steam. Damn you...

Holy cow, thank you!  I always miss these sales and I have been holding off and holding off on Portal 2.  Almost caved last weekend and bought it.  Glad I didn't.

I went for the Bethesda Pack. I'll probably never play Brink, but I've been wanting Skyrim on PC ever since the Steam workshop came into being. I've also never played New Vegas, so there was some incentive there. Fired up Skyrim a bit last night just to see how my laptop could handle it. The game said that I should stick with medium settings, which at first was disappointing, but even then it looked so much better than the XBOX version that I soon got over it. Much shorter load times, too.

No worries, Trine 2 is completely playable solo. You might have to get lucky/exploit a couple puzzles but you wont hit any impassable areas. Hope you enjoy the game, amazing purchase at that price.

Nice timing Valve!

I am flat broke right now.

Doh!  I totally would have gotten Deus Ex if I'd seen this thread yesterday.  Hopefully that comes back around near the end of the sale.

I don't know why I care really, I have about 6 games that I really want to play that I've bought on previous Steam sales and either haven't started or just haven't put enough time into yet.

To be honest, I don't see myself going too nuts on this sale. I did that with last year's Christmas sale and wound up with a massive backlog I'm still working through, so I went in with a pretty small want list, including Rayman and potentially Trine 2, both of which I bought today. All I really have left is EYE: Divine Cybermancy and perhaps Driver: SF, and I think I'm pretty much good.

However, I did find a surprise must-buy: Crusader Kings 2 (One of the current daily deals). I assumed it was just some generic medieval strategy game until I found a couple of player stories on various forums that turned me around:

I remember a game in CK I had going as the Duke of Moray (who is the grandson of the historical Mac Beth, for those interested in history). While I was weaseling my way into the good graces of the counts of Scotland and taking land in Ireland, I married a lass from Byzantine and had a large number of kids. Not wanting my current heir (who was the son of the dukes sister) I changed the succession laws to favor my own kids. Good thing too, as Angus (my former heir) went a little crazy, killed his own infant child on orders from the voices in his head, and caught leprosy before falling catatonic. Meanwhile my own child became good friends with the king of England (who helped out when he later followed up on his fathers plan to overthrow the king of Scotland). Ended up with much of Wales, Ireland, the Isles, Scotland, Greenland, and surrounding under his banner as King of Scotland and Ireland, Duke of Moray.

I was playing the king of France yesterday and everything was going good for a while until some of my heirs died of the plague. My only heir and then subsequent ruler was, get this, a homosexual, heretic dwarf. After he became king he was quickly excommunicated, he never produced an heir, and then all my vassals revolted and split up France, eventually uniting behind some asshole. My gay dwarf character didn't lose everything; he hung on to one piece of land... until he died and my dynasty died with him.

So yeah, I had to buy it. And even better, there's just been a Game of Thrones total conversion mod released for it.

How much is Crusader Kings?  I can't access it from work but that sounds right up my alley and I might have to call my wife and make her buy it for me on my comp...

$10 for the vanilla game, $12.49 for the collection version that just throws in a bunch of cosmetic DLC (I just got the vanilla myself). You might want to call her fairly sharpish though, as the daily deals are  due to change in the next hour or two. Bear in mind that I'm in Australia and therefore have to do timezone arithmetic on this one, but there's still probably not a load of time left.

Is it the Steam Winter Sale there?

Alright, i bit the bullet and got the Telltale collection as well as the Witcher: Enhanced Edition and Terraria all for $57
post #16 of 363

Just bought Crusader Kings II. That sounds delish. Have to wait to get home for the install, though.

Broke my cherry and picked up Portal and Portal 2 for £4.49.  I have just completed Portal and what a short but very sweet game it is.  Going to have a look about for other fun games to pick up.

On one hand I love all you guys buying Crusader Kings. One the other, boy I hope you know what you're getting into.

I sold my Xbox 360 copy of The Orange Box in anticipation of the sale so I've only upgraded to the PC version so far. It's a good thing my 2008 macbook can't run half of these games competently in boot camp or I'd have dropped some money on one of their collections already. I haven't played Sonic Generations so to be able to pick it up for $10 today is tempting.

I presume you mean that in a good way, because this game sounds custom-made to make my imagination run riot. Remember, I'm the guy who equates Skyrim with HBO and Football Manager with a biography purely off the back of my proclivity for assembling my own narratives.

Crusader Kings wasn't even close to being on my radar until this thread. Gonna have to check this out.

OK, for the people who've just bought Crusader Kings 2, I'm trying it out while referring to the following guides:

Wait, I haven't bought it yet (their mobile version of their web page won't accept my payment information as it doesn't believe Arizona is actually a state).  How do you mean this exactly?

I've heard the learning curve is steep.

Alan Wake + Alan Wake's American Nightmare + the soundtrack for $10!

Yarp. This was made for EVE Online but it sort of fits here too.

Yeah, it's a bit overwhelming at first. If you follow the guide on the Something Awful forums I linked to though, it does help take you through the mechanics enough so you get a general idea what you're doing. I've managed to get far enough to butter up a hostile vassal, whack a conniving dignitary from the enemy on my own turf and just about escape death from the flu, so as the mechanics become clearer the emergent stuff is showing its charm. It's confusing but enjoyable and I'm starting to get the feel that this is kind of a roguelike take on a strategy title, i.e. your bloodline is highly unlikely to make it to the end but it's the crazy stuff that happens on the way to obliteration that counts.

I've heard good things about Puzzle Agent and the Walking Dead, mixed to bad things about Jurassic Park and Back to the Future, and I have not heard anything about the quality of Telltale's Monkey Island stuff.

I was a big fan of Puzzle Agent's atmosphere (sort of a supernatural Fargo), and as someone who doesn't play a lot of puzzle games I found them sufficiently engaging as long as you don't mind using the hint system on occasion. That being said, it's very, very weird and oddly paced, and definitely not in the goofy Strongbad/Monkey Island/Sam and Max vein. I've also been playing through the Telltale Monkey Island stuff recently (about halfway thru the last episode), and I've found it to be a solid addition to the franchise. The episodic nature is also a big plus when it comes to puzzle solving, as your inventory andlocales are limited which prevents you having to trudge thru a huge area with 40 random bits of crap. The puzzles themselves seemed more sensical as well, though I did inevitably have to cheat at certain points (it is an adventure game).

As for the rest, I'm hoping for a 75% (or 50%) on Walking Dead. Back to the Future doesn't hold a big interest for me but I can't speak to its quality, and I heard Jurassic Park is complete trash.

Indie Bundle 1 is terrific so far, especially Lone Survivor and Anomaly: Warzone Earth. I'm still debating getting bundle 2 for Bunnicula and Universe Sandbox, even if the rest of the group doesn't excite me much.

#1st world problems rant: I'd be down with the indie bundles if they weren't retreads of the stuff I've picked up through indie gala/humblebundles or previous sales in another life brotha - it's going to boil down to buying 1 game from the pack (if it interests me) per bundle. Other complaint about the sales is the dumb voting patterns of the community. Seriously, everyone could have been getting down with the excellent QUBE right about now, but nope the majority picked plants vs fucking zombies, a game that's been discounted every other week on steam - not to mention AssCreed and its drm snuck in yesterday. I miss the easter egg hunt crap and coupons too.

I've been summer santa claus because I nearly own most games. Picked up Spec Ops from Amazon, and Endless Space/Risen 2 from Green Man Gaming. Not a lot on my wishlist that isn't pre-order material. Currently holding out for Sniper Elite, Gods and Kings (Civ 5, I don't know why because I don't play civ 5), and Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion.

it was nice to nab Trine bundle for the wife. And if Walking Dead goes on sale, you jump on that motherfucker hard it's the first telltale game I've played that doesn't feel like you're clicking on things for the sake of clicking on things. Add to that you have some hard gut punching Mass Effecty choices to make; first telltale game I played the episodes in one sitting without getting bored.

That's because you BUY EVERY SINGLE THING THAT'S RELEASED MR. MYSTERIOUS WEALTHY VIDEO GAME INSIDER MAGNATE. I have some suspicions as to your true identity, mongycore... or should I say, Ebag Llewen.

I wish, that guy gets all the ladies. More like gamedev hangeron lately, consulting/cert advisor. The money I've made to buy everything comes from Canada. Sweet delicious clean hydro energy sold to various parts of North America. I half joke that I could mine the land for Tiberium and cut down the trees and tank rush the rest of Canada, but such a day hasn't become necessary. What I don't buy ends up coming my way via activation codes from former coworkers/friends spread out across the industry.

Briefly toyed with starting up a small indie studio in Canada, but don't want to Shilling myself into ruin. I can program well enough, but discovered with my homemade in development ios app that I am utter shit at art/animation. There are 4 year olds who can draw better than me.

Hey, thanks mongy!

Edit: Just to clarify, mongy just gifted me three games I didn't own. I'm winter Santa, he's summer Santa!

I got unexpected giftery from the monge as well. Thanks!

Everybody better rep the shit outta him.

Same here, he's mongy to the core.

And did people really choose Plants vs. Zombies for the Community Choice sale?  Who doesn't have that by now?

Mongy, you're the fucking man.

Mongycore just levelled up my heart. Thanks, mongycore!

Shit mongy thanks so much mate. You legend.

Steam balance in running dry, folk I've pm'd respond before I start giving digital coal. One unintended side-effect of today's adventure was discovering in horror gifting adds folk to your friends list automatically. Apologies in advance that I've been removing you as soon as you've been intentionally added - just some peeps on my list really value their privacy/nda stuff - so if you've received something please redeem it asap...I'm the at&t of santa's.

Thanks, Mongy! Can't wait to give OMD some lovin'!

On  a whim, I decided to pick up Payday: The Heist as part of yesterday's daily. It's really quite a cool little game, kind of Left 4 Dead: Heat Edition. There's even a level called Heat Street that's clearly inspired by the street battle scene. It's not too sophisticated or the prettiest game in the world, but damn it's fun. At the very least, it helps soothe the pain of not being able to get L4D2 cheap due to the horribly neutered Aussie version...

Wow, thanks mongy. I'll be sure to play critical mass, looks fun and addictive in a way that will surely shorten the life of my controller. Puzzle games can do that.

When I opened steam this morning I had to look to see what was on sale, even though I tried my best to avoid spending more money I wasn't able to get away without The Binding of Isaac, Worms Reloaded, and Sonic Generations ending up in my cart.

*sigh*

I'm a sucker for the games of my childhood and all three spoke to me in a way I couldn't ignore at that price. Both Worms and Sonic I new would be great and the gameplay of Isaac spoke to the Zelda fan in me.

/edit

Wow, I just looked at the store again and saw that a Batman Arkham City/Asylum package with all of the DLC of both games is going for $24.99... ending in 11 hours.

mongy, you are the man. Now stand still while I hurl rep at you!

I figured $7.99 was low enough to spring for LA Noire.

Payday is a ton of fun, especially when you get it on the cheap. And there's some L4D tie in DLC dropping soon.

It's not a perfect game by any stretch, but I dug it quite a bit. Bit of advice though, remember that you can  back out of an accusation if you want without penalty. I didn't realize that until halfway thru the game, but it can be real handy on the odd occasion that Cole says something you weren't expecting.

Thanks, Mongy, you beautiful bastard!

Of the sales currently on, everyone buy Borderlands and Orcs Must Die.

Two Worlds 2 is fun, crazy, bananas, Euro Oblivion/Skyrim.  Worth it.

Dead Island is hella busted and hella fun.  It's Borderlands meets Fallout 3 meets zambies.

Frozen Synapse is bad as shit.  Simultaneous turn based strategy.  Took me 3 trips through the tutuorial to get it.

And, of course, the Batman Arkham games, some of the finest games of the past couple of years.

For the newbies out there, remember the Steam Sale Rules: Don't buy it unless it's a daily deal or a flash deal.  I don't care if it's 75% right now, it could be 90% in a day.  Anything you want that doesn't hit a daily or flash, wait and get on the last day.

Like Jade Empire.  First time ever on sale? Fuck yeah.
