2012 Emmy Nominations

Thread Starter

Louie the actor, writer and director did good.  Louie the show got robbed.

They apparently still love Downton Abbey.

Game of Thrones can't seem to get any love beyond Dinklage.

Kind of love John Hamm's nomination for the live 30 Rock episode.

When is SNL going to stop being nominated for Best Anything?

I refuse to get mad at the Emmys anymore because they don't matter, but when I see 4 people from Modern Family in the Supporting Actor Category it still pisses me off.

I've finally been watching enough TV to pay attention to this thing. Aside from the happy surprise of Girls/Lena Dunham getting a nod, and wishing nothing but the best for Louie/GoT/Breaking Bad, I realize I can go back to not paying attention.

Congrats to Parks and Recreation on its much-deserved Best Comedy Emmy nomina-- oh wait, The goddamn fucking Big Bang Theory got nominated, instead.

It looks like the only love 'Justified' received is Jeremy Davies for 'guest actor in a drama series'

edit- ...and one for Art Direction

Community only got one nom -best writing "Remedial Chaos Theory"

No Lena Headey, no Maisie Williams, no Alfie Allen, and no Charles Dance. Bullshit has been called.

I also can't believe the lack of love for Justified.  Also, John Noble gets robbed every year for Fringe.  Finally, really American Horror Story? Reclassifying yourself as a miniseries to score some easy Emmy nods?  Twelve episodes qualifies you as a miniseries?  That's pretty fucking cheap.

I loved AMS, but that was some slick politicking there, for sure.  Yeah, they are changing up the entire show next season, but this is still like claiming every season of "24' is a "mini-series."

The stunner for me:  Margaret Cho for Guest Actress on a Comedy for her MAD-TV-level impersonation of Kim Jong-Il on 30 ROCK.  Yeesh.

Go VEEP!

The only nomination Big Bang Theory really deserved is the one for Mayim Bialik.  She's pretty stellar, and forced the show to change for the better.

And yeah, that Cho nomination is just bizarre.

24 tended to have, well... 24 episodes.

It's a stupid rule, though...By their reasoning, every show on cable should be considered a miniseries.

Go get 'em, Dinklage!

Gotta love the star power in the Lead Actor in a Miniseries category:  Elba, Cumberbatch, Costner, Owen, Harrelson ... oh yeah, and Bill Paxton.

You could argue Paxton is a way bigger "star" than anyone in that group other than Costner and Harrelson.

I would also argue that Paxton's performance in Hatfields & McCoys was the worst part of an uneven miniseries to begin with.  But there you go.

Why was Dinklage relegated to the Supporting category?  Did he not receive top billing for the second season?  Or was that just because they figured it would improve his chances?

With a series so overstuffed with characters, I guess you could make a case that everyone on that show is a supporting actor.

It's an ego thing with the actors.  That's why modern Family puts everyone in Supporting when Julie Bowen and Ty Burrell should be leads.

I'd even say all the adults should be put in the Lead Actor category and the kid actors supporting.  It's a bit easier to get a supporting nom.  Unless you are Nick Offerman or Donald Glover.

Or Jim Parsons.

Yup.  That show is the definition of an ensemble piece, though it does improve his chances to go supporting rather than lead.  Rule of thumb: if you ever see a questionable category placement for an actor, it's always the result of tactical strategy on the part of the studio to get as many noms as possible.

It was the flip to "good supporting actors getting shut out of supporting actor emmys" with "clearly phoning it in by now lead actors getting automatic nominations."

A few years ago I would have used Charlie Sheen, since he was getting them automatically prior to his meltdown too.

Apart from the ensemble thing, yeah, wouldn't have stood a chance in the Lead category.

So I'm not watching but a write up online has Stonestreet/Bowen/Levitan for Moden Family winning.  And BBT Jim Parsons.  only Louis CK is the correct pick for writing..

The same winners as last year i believe.

Just flipped it over right as Gus announced Dickie Bennett's win.

I'm sure Homeland is good show, otherwise they wouldn't be winning over Breaking Bad and Mad Men. But the biggest impression it's made on me tonight that everyone who works on it is slightly cunty.

Louie CK winning three Emmys is pretty cool.

JONATHAN LEVINSON WINS!

That Modern Family shit continues to not be funny.

Umm. do they actually watch the PARKS & REC screeners?! Ugh.

Happy for Lewis and Danes though.

Don't give a cack about who wins the official bollockses but Tina Fey and Louis CK won the Buchos for most enjoyable talking on mic.

And Amy Poehler and Kat Dennings won for best dresses.

No love for Game of Thrones?  Fuck you very much.

It tied with Homeland for most wins, but they were all technical.

Haven't seen Homeland, but I seriously doubt it's in the same league as Breaking Bad, Mad Men, or Game of Thrones.

Favorite part of what I caught was probably Aziz delivering his entire presentation using a British accent (à la the Lil' Sebastian funeral-episode).

Camera cuts over to Clive Owen, cackling like mad.

Aziz was fun. Also liked the little bit Amy did with Julia Louis-Dreyfus and the speech mix-up.

Kimmel was a good host too, I can see him being asked back.

You realize how silly that comment is, right? "I knowingly base my opinion on ignorance!"

I have seen it, and -this- particular season, I'd take Homeland over any of them.

Hey, I doubt it is too. The subject matter alone seems pretty standard and reminiscent of 24, which I didn't like.

But I'd like to be wrong, and will be finding out this week when I finally deign to check it out. The emmy wins officially got me to pick it up.

Everyone should see Homeland. After the way the first season ended, it's difficult for me to imagine how a Season 2 or beyond plays out. But I'm damn curious to see what they do. As a standalone season, it really is a fucking good ride. And those two leads deserved those Emmys, it is known. Personally I'd even put Mandy Patinkin's performance above the two leads; he's much less flashy as a character but he does some devastating work. He is the soul of show in many ways. Ugh, just watch it you guys!

I realize that describing something as "overrated" is the laziest of critiques, but Homeland is sincerely overrated.

Totally. The best I can say about it is that the 3 leads are fine and it's better than 24, but only just.

My pick to host the Oscars... that will never happen.

It's not(Well, your mileage may vary on GoT depending on how you like fantasy, I don't, but I like GoT okay and I like it better than LOTR because it's meaner, more political, human, and sex and adult language and drama are in this world and I DO like LOTR. GoT is just another level, and I can't get through the books, the show cutting out a lot of the fat and sometimes clumsy narration.), but it IS great. Feels like a good and more than solid conspiracy thriller from the 70's IMO. Damian Lewis and Danes are great.

24 is a funny cartoon and right-wing wet dream.
