Oscar-winning actor making his directorial debut with an unlikely project...
CROWE IS EATING BILL HICKS
How about Jason Lee? He can be funny, he's got some emotion and if he's at all serious about acting anymore he could use a prestige flick to pull him out of the goddamn talking animal movie trenches. The guy deserves a shot. He's so much better than the material he gets (or seems to choose).
"Play from your fucking heaaaarrrrt!" -- Bill Hicks
A younger Crowe definitely has the looks. But brooding is never a term I'd use to describe Hicks, and it's nearly synonomous with Crowe.
Whoever they cast, might as well go with an actual stand up comedian. Unless it's not that kind of a movie. Regardless nobody really comes to mind.
Well that's... Interesting. I remember the rumours from a few years back about Crowe playing Hicks, but him directing the film is something I never predicted.
For a directorial debut, talk about playing with fire. Hicks isn't a figure you try and shoehorn into the traditional/cliched biopic structure, not without completely missing much of what made him so important, so I hope they're up to the job.
I wonder if it will focus on a handful of days in the life of Hicks or if it will cover the majority of his life. I can really only see the former working. As long as it ends before he finds out about his cancer and Maynard handles the music.
I would've loved to see a younger Crowe's take on Hicks, they both have such intense energies. Has Crowe ever said what it is that draws him to Hicks? I really hope Crowe is able to do him justice.
As an aside, for about two months every time(!) I saw this image on Netflix I thought it was J.T. Walsh, even though I knew better:
Fuck, who am I kidding? I've never stopped seeing J.T. Walsh..
