If you're unaware, I'd like to turn chewers onto Flying Lotus.
Besides being an awesome musician, he is also a close friend. We went to film school together in Los Angeles back in 2001 when he was a nobody (if being the great nephew of Alice and John Coltrane can be counted as "nobody"). But he was a humble, quiet, down to earth guy and we sort of clicked out of a class of 40 students and would hang out. He was into directing film back then, but was doing music on the side, and always trying to get me to smoke pot. He introduced me to Asian cinema and the goodness of OldBoy. I liked the music he was doing, but he didn't talk about it much, he was dead set on directing movies.
We actually lost touch for a few years then got back together last year after he'd gone to great heights of fame...having released several albums. I didn't even know he was Flying Lotus at first. I hadn't been keeping up with the music scene, but I'd heard some tracks and thought this guy, whoever he was, was awesome. He got to collaborate with his hero Thom Yorke of Radiohead on his last album and they toured together. Erykah Badu, Thundercat, Niki Randa, Yorke and Radiohead guitarist Johnny Greenwood all make appearances on his next album, Until The Quiet Comes.
Anyway, here's a few of my favorite tracks. If you're interested, it is well worth your while to dig deeper.
And 2012 Coachella...
