Saw this today; i thought its certainly Wiseman's best film to date, which means its solid and entertaining, but shallow...however, it deserves a few bullet points:
What's great:
-Kate Beckinsale; she's clearly having a blast playing the villain, and her performance is just fun to watch because of that; the idea of making Lori and Richter from the original into a single character actually helps the film, especially because it bypasses the problem of finding an Ironside proxy.
-The world building and design: hell if its not spectacular to look at; yes the whole "The Fall" concept is utter nonsense, but it provides a good setting for the finally and its a cool visual.
-The action: far less messy and shaky than i expected, its actually easy to follow and lend the movie a nice 80's/90's action flick flair.
-
Whats solid:
-Colin Farrel and everyone else: Beckinsale might look like she's the only one having fun, but most of the rest of the cast are solid and give effective performances for what is a mindless scifi action flick.
-The script: Its works in service of the story, and it avoided making too many references or winks at the original; not a single groan worthy line or concept, aside from "The fall", but that was a entertaining kind of dumb, so it gets a pass; also, it had the honesty to throw the 3 boobs scene randomly because it knew there was no way of repurposing it.
Whats bad:
-The utter waste of Cranston; the script gives him little villain time or motivation, and while Beckinsale makes up for this, its just too much of a waste of character and actor to go unnoticed.
-That it plays it safe: sure, it was never going to surpass the original, but the whole movie just uses the twists and inherent mistery of the original as turning points for a pretty generic story; its good for a mindless action flick, but it also shows just how much richer and fun the risks Verhoven took in the original make the movie; it essentially uses the original as a crutch to keep walking at a steady pace.
Whats pointless:
-The title: Seriously, had this been called anything but "Total Recall", i would had zero problems with it, aside from the obvious shared concepts and plot; there was little need to associate this movie with the original, which ends up making it far more hollow than it is.
The veredict: Exciting but shallow entertainment, and utterly harmless; it wont replace or even get near the original in terms of quality and concept, but neither damages or hurts it either; worth a rental or a cheaper matinee watch
