Get yuh azzes to de tred!

This movie is a gigantic piece of shit. As soon as they started explaining the world in an opening text, and there was some random transportation device called "the fall" that takes people to one colony to the other, I knew we were in trouble. Actually, I knew we were in trouble when the "Original Films" logo opened the movie and some dude shouted out "Not really!"

Summer blockbusters: get your dime-store political philosophy metaphors out of your fucking scripts already. We don't need anymore 99% analogies unless you truly intend on doing them justice and not being so fucking lazy.

Single serving plot points.

The IMDB newsfeed kind of unintentionally made a good point when it mentioned that after some promising work in the early 2000s, Colin Farrell has starred in a string of flops, including "Alexander", "Miami Vice", "Pride and Glory", "Fright Night", and now "Total Recall".

When you look at that list, you can see that he's now been in three totally unnecessary re-makes/re-imaginings. At least "Miami Vice" was made by the same person who exec produced the TV series, but I don't think that made it any less unnecessary.

The article adds that the only recent movie he's been in that was a hit was "Horrible Bosses", and he only had a small role in that. There's a clear pattern here.

"Total Recall" is his first starring role since "Fright Night", another excellent movie (not as special as the original "Total Recall", but still pretty damn special) that SO didn't need to be updated for the 2000s. He needs to make fewer movies like these and more movies like "In Bruges" that play to his strengths and are actually original.

Farrell's a character actor who got groomed for stardom by Joel Schumacher. It didn't take. Too bad, because he's likable at worst (and great in the right role) and he isn't really the problem with Total Recall. He had so much visible fun in Horrible Bosses you can tell he's aching to do more comedy. He was miscast as fuck in Alexander though.

His biggest hit as far as headlining a movie was S.W.A.T. I think Alexander the following year did a lot to fuck with his leading man status with the public.

No remake is "necessary" and Mann's Miami Vice is clearly more ambitious than something like Fright Night or Total Recall.

Collin Ferrell haters I direct you to In Bruges.

Farrell is just plain great, the haters are crazy. I can't think of a single film he's been bad in, and in others he's been the highlight of the movie. Terrance Malick, Steven Speilberg, Oliver Stone, Peter Weir and Michael Mann didn't choose to work with him for nothing.

Who's hatin'? Certainly not me. I hope my comments weren't interpreted that way. I like the guy. I just think he's made a lot of crappy decisions about what movies to star in recently. I liked "Phone Booth". Some of the only Joel Schumacher movies I liked were the ones he starred in. "Tigerland" was good as well.

Like everyone here (apparently), I thought he ruled in "In Bruges", but I may have enjoyed his performance just as much in "Daredevil". I don't get the hate for that movie. I think it was a pretty decent comic book/superhero movie and Farrell was a big part of that.

His Bullseye was one of the best, funniest, and most underrated comic book villains we've seen thus far. I loved his 'recovery' and last words at the end...one of my favourite comic book movie endings.

Yeah, he wasn't the problem with Daredevil or Fright Night either. He makes a great villain.

Yeah, Farrell is really and truly the only good thing in Fright Night. Daredevil is just pure shit - it's tonally confused and ugly and otherwise filled with poor choices from top to bottom.

I saw this on Saturday, and immediately forgot about the minute I walked out of the theater.  The only thing I remember is how stupid the idea of passing through the core of the earth was, and some of cluttered visuals being nice to look at.  Too bad this was crap, but I will always have the original.

Wut?! Hahaha seems someone took the "science" of Phantom Menace too seriously.

I kind of like the idea of the earth's core elevator, but if you know even a little bit about geology it's revealed as the most moronic conceit of the summer. Mass teleportation makes more sense.

I DARE you to poke holes in the earths core elevator.  DARE.

I liked the 'core elevator' just because it was the silliest/campy/fun concept in an otherwise DULL AS SHIT movie.

Boring. I think the movie's biggest offense is Copenhaagen's lack of "death by Dangerfieldification."

"No respect!"

Went to see this last night, even though I was (still am) fighting a nasty stomach flu.

About 40 minutes into this turd, the combo of popcorn and soda hit my stomach wrong, and I vomited all over the place.  It was so rank, that they stopped the film and gave everyone refunds in the theater due to them having to clean it up.

I guess that was my good deed of the year.

That sounds horrible and embarrassing. :(  Also hilarious hahaha.

I only wish I'd done that during Avatar, instead of afterwards.

Don't start hating on Avatar now, you hear me?

You're still carrying that torch, BL?

Popcorn and soda are the last thing you need to be consuming with stomach flu.

and now you sound like my fiance.  LOL

I also had pretzel bites!  I honestly don't know what I was thinking.  Funny thing is, I got a refund and two free movie tickets?  I guess I will be seeing Bourne this weekend, because based on what I saw, i won't even revisit Total Recall when it's on F/X.

I hate Avatar so much.  I gave it a half-hearted pass back during its theatrical run.  And then it's festered and crusted into pure delicious hate.

Avatar is 1000 times better than John Carter.

It's cause Avatar is richer than you. He's got 2 billion in his pocket. How much you got?

I'll carry that torch to my deathbed, and then it shall remain as an eternal flame burning by my grave untill end of days.

I have the fact that I didn't make something as lame as Avatar!  It's all I need.  And my copy of the Avatar blu-ray... (WHY DO I HAVE THIS???)

You have it because every once in a while, the flames of hatred need to be rekindled.

I have it (and John carter) because they're fun, but to each their own.

I bought Avatar when I got a BluRay player, but then I couldn't manage to get through it, and traded it for a Lego video game.

Not only do I own Avatar, but I own the expensive Collector's Edition Blu-ray.

Yeah, it's always embarrassing when great grandparents try to buy you a "cool" present.

It's only a matter of time before you painter yourself blue in a feverish frenzy and go live in the forest... another one claimed.

Saw this today; i thought its certainly Wiseman's best film to date, which means its solid and entertaining, but shallow...however, it deserves a few bullet points:

What's great:

-Kate Beckinsale; she's clearly having a blast playing the villain, and her performance is just fun to watch because of that; the idea of making Lori and Richter from the original into a single character actually helps the film, especially because it bypasses the problem of finding an Ironside proxy.

-The world building and design: hell if its not spectacular to look at; yes the whole "The Fall" concept is utter nonsense, but it provides a good setting for the finally and its a cool visual.

-The action: far less messy and shaky than i expected, its actually easy to follow and lend the movie a nice 80's/90's action flick flair.

-

Whats solid:

-Colin Farrel and everyone else: Beckinsale might look like she's the only one having fun, but most of the rest of the cast are solid and give effective performances for what is a mindless scifi action flick.

-The script: Its works in service of the story, and it avoided making too many references or winks at the original; not a single groan worthy line or concept, aside from "The fall", but that was a entertaining kind of dumb, so it gets a pass; also, it had the honesty to throw the 3 boobs scene randomly because it knew there was no way of repurposing it.

Whats bad:

-The utter waste of Cranston; the script gives him little villain time or motivation, and while Beckinsale makes up for this, its just too much of a waste of character and actor to go unnoticed.

-That it plays it safe: sure, it was never going to surpass the original, but the whole movie just uses the twists and inherent mistery of the original as turning points for a pretty generic story; its good for a mindless action flick, but it also shows just how much richer and fun the risks Verhoven took in the original make the movie; it essentially uses the original as a crutch to keep walking at a steady pace.

Whats pointless:

-The title: Seriously, had this been called anything but "Total Recall", i would had zero problems with it, aside from the obvious shared concepts and plot;  there was little need to associate this movie with the original, which ends up making it far more hollow than it is.

The veredict: Exciting but shallow entertainment, and utterly harmless; it wont replace or even get near the original in terms of quality and concept, but neither damages or hurts it either; worth a rental or a cheaper matinee watch

After thinking about this way back when I first saw the trailer I decided to finally make this in response to why I couldn't muster up enough energy to go see this. First time I've bothered making one of these silly things.

Shaun, being that pretty and successful is a heavy burden. I know all about it.

HOLY SHIT IT'S SO FUCKING BORING!

70 minutes in and I had to give up. This is unbelievable. I'm drunk, bored, lazy and I still cannot put up with this.

That bad, huh?

It truly is that bad.

Thought it was "okay" in the way that sometimes you catch a repeat of Murder She Wrote and find yourself watching it because it doesn't particularly offend you and you don't have anything else to do. The one thing that really annoyed me though is that the had several references to the original movie but there was no "Consider that a divorce" line! It was one of my favorite lines from the Arnie version and would have worked even better here due to the emphasis on the wife character!!!
