THE BOURNE LEGACY - Pre-Release Thread

Thread Starter

What's the word on the street on the new Bourne movie? Any early reviews come in for that yet?

Personally, I want to like it. I liked the other movies in the series, the third one especially, but there's also part of me that is not sure Jeremy Renner can carry the franchise the same way Matt Damon did. I guess if the writers and such are the same (are they?) that it's probably done well but then again how often do people say, 'wow, this fourth movie in the series is awesome!"? I've been watching the trailers and such, there's a good collection of The Bourne Legacy videos here, but it's all kind of the same thing over and over in the clips. I'm waiting for some other clips, not like TV spots, to come out before making my decision of spending the cash on this movie or not. Anyone read the books? (Sorry for babbling, kind of lost track there!)

I'm not sure how the "genetic tampering" angle is going to work--it seems like needlessly injecting sci-fi elements into a series that's gotten on just fine by being a straight spy thriller, thankyouverymuch. But Tony Gilroy's helming this one, and the return of a big chunk of the supporting cast, plus all the new awesome actors, topped off with Jeremy Renner finally getting his big headliner, make me think it's going to be a satisfying time at the movies.

Here's hoping.

Heard Joan Allen doesn't much original footage here. Mostly playbacks from ULTIMATUM.

Hollywood keeps trying to make certain people into stars (Colin Farrell, Kate Bekinsale, Ryan Reynolds, Jessica Biel) and Jeremy Renner is one of them. Don't care how good he was in The Hurt Locker, the guy is a slightly better looking clone of Michael J. Pollard and he hasn't carried a single movie on his own to say nothing about his lack of charisma. He's only been in two hits films since Locker (M:I-4/Avengers) and both were a part of established franchises. Now they're giving him his shot and it's a quasi sequel to a trilogy that starred someone else.

Basically it's what they did in Police Academy 5: Assignment Miami Beach when they cast Matt McCoy as Cmdt. Lassard's nephew, or some such bullshit, to replace Steve Guttenberg and the magic was gone.

We all miss the Steve Guttenberg magic.

The very very brief bits of Joan Allen might be extra or deleted material from the other Bournes. Straithairn has something like a two or three scene cameo, including a bit where he's testifying.

This is very much a direct sequel, dealing with the fallout of the news reports that close part three, so people who pop up from the other films are mostly sequestered to the margins of the picture. Disappointing thing is, it's still the same format, with a bunch of great actors (Ed Norton, Corey Stoll, Stacy Keach) restricted to control rooms tracking Nu-Bourne through security footage and satellite crap.

Thought it was ok, but super inessential, and has pretty much no ending. Oh, and that "genetic tampering" stuff is seriously downplayed, the movie doesn't move into sci-fi territory.

I do agree that Hollywood seems to be insisting upon JEREMY RENNER: ACTION STAR and I'm not fully convinced of it yet. I like the guy, but I think he works best as character actor. I don't see the need for him in 2 major spy franchises and one superhero franchise (and at this rate he'll be up for another, I'm thinking Carnahan's DAREDEVIL)  Plus we're going to get HANSEL AND GRETEL WITCH HUNTERS, which will be his (failed) stab at an action/horror/fantsy franchise. I mean, c'mon guy. How about a movie where you just play like a normal person.

Hmm, Matt Damon had his stab at a action/horror/fantasy franchise with Brothers Grimm.  Now, Renner has Hansel and Gretel.  And then starred in Bourne Legacy.

I forsee a remake of Face/Off in their future.

I'm crestfallen.  I was so looking forward to this movie, in the vain hopes that it would come close to Supremacy or Ultimatum.  I saw them on TNT this weekend, and my God are those movies good.  Between this, Prometheus and TDKR... It's been an underwhelming summer.

Well, at least they got the rights to that snazzy Moby song!

I GOT IT.  Jeez.

I'll still see it, but "super inessential" isn't a ringing endorsement.  I was hoping for something more, like a "worthy successor of the Greengrass Bourne films."

Devin wasn't a huge fan, either.

I will say that I always thought Jeremy Renner was a Streisand, but he was rocking the shit in this movie.

Any good fight scenes in this? On par with the Bourne vs Dash fight in Ultimatum.

Looks like I'll be avoiding this one. Thanks for the warning.

A couple of individual fight scenes are pretty decent, though it's mostly Renner absolutely dismantling fools. It's more about chasing and running than it is fighting.

There are a couple of super intense action sequences.

There's one moment in the labs where Rachel Weisz (starting to look like Isabelle Adjani, UNF) has to run from her lab partner, who snaps and locks everyone in a room, executing them one by one. I talked with others after the film, and it reminded them all of the Colorado incident, sadly. it is a SUPER upsetting sequence, and some of the newcomers to the series were stunned that this movie was PG-13. Very intense, realistic scene, with Zeljko Ivanek calmly walking to each door in the room, locking it and removing the handle.

These movies always have a special guest-star villain near the end as a cunning superagent of sorts. This one has Louis Ozawa Changchien, who was Hanso in Predators, and here, he's just a silent Terminator type, kind of awesome and unstoppable, but nothing you've never seen before. Did like how there's one moment during their all-terrain, Black Rain-ish chase in the Phillipines where I'm pretty certain both he and Renner simultaneously put on shades.

Dude.  HIT. SUBMIT. ONCE.

Only thing I was curious about is if the movie ends with "Extreme Ways" playing.  Now I know and can carry on ignoring this movie.

Hey, hey! Someone has to talk about the movie this weekend with me!

I'm extremely likely to see this movie this weekend.

Apparently its "Treading Water".

A few Spoilers in the article above.

Didn't Devin say the same thing in his review?

Ah, yes.  "And where Bourne was in search of his past - and eventually redemption - Cross knows full well who he was. In fact he’s not a big fan of that guy; before joining Outcome Cross was a GI with a sub-normal IQ. Without his ‘chems’ that’s exactly who he’ll become again. It’s Flowers For AlgerBourne."

Nick seemed to dig it, judging from his Twitter feed.  I'll wait until you swinging dicks see it Friday night.  Let me know before noon on Saturday, ok?!
