Frank Ocean's Channel Orange

I have never really been a big fan of R&B music.  However, I took the plunge (excuse the pun)with Frank Ocean based on all the hype and flawless reviews surrounding it.

It's been about a month now and the album is just dominating my listening time.  I can't get enough of it. I just wanted to start a thread to discuss the album, everyone's favorite songs, or why you love it or hate it.

I was inspired to start this after listening to "Pink Matter" and Andre 3000's guitar solo.

Have you heard the mixtape he put out before this, "Nostalgia/Ultra"? If not, get on that. I still like it more than Channel Orange, but Orange is a really solid, self-assured step forward from a guy that I want to hear much more of. I really like the album overall, but the tracklist seems sort of manic and non-cohesive, which is a bummer because Nostalgia flowed perfectly. That small gripe aside (and wishing that "Fertilizer" was a full song), great, great stuff.

I have the "Novacane" and "Swim Good" singles, but not the whole album.  I know all about it, so I am really not sure why I haven't picked that up yet.  Shame on me.

I couldn't agree more about "Fertilizer".  I just start bobbing my head and then the radio static hits and the song is over.  Sad.

I'll also agree that the album is a bit non-cohesive (this, coming from a guy who's favorite album is Radiohead's Kid A, so I understand this gripe) and a few songs I really don't enjoy too much, "Crack Rock", "Monks", and "Pilot Jones" come to mind. "Pyramids", I have a mixed reaction to.  Sometimes, I get deep in it and other times I can't be bothered.  My favorite tracks are "Sweet Life", "Super Rich Kids", "Pink Matter", "Lost", and "Bad Religion" (probably in that order too, but a few might be able to be switched around.

The only other recent new school R&B album I own is House of Ballons by The Weeknd, which I enjoy.  Just not to this extent.  Anything else out there I should be checking out?  Know anything about tThe-Dream?

I'm a huge fan of The-Dream. Love King was one of my favorite albums for months when it dropped.

That's all I needed to hear, thanks.  I'll check it out.

It's the shit. Unlike Jake, I like it better than the mixtape. Best album of the year, no hyperbole.

I have a hard time identifying my favorite song, or even a top five.

But here goes:

1. Sweet Life

2. Lost

3. Pyramids

4. Bad Religion

5. Forest Gump

5 and a half. Thinking About You ARGH IT'S SO HARD TO CHOOOOOOOOOOOSE

yeah, it is hard to choose.  Suddenly, "Pyramids" crept into the top 5.  It changes daily.  I keep going back to this album though.  I usually wear shit out pretty fast, but this one has proved to have some staying power.  We'll see.

Yeah, that Andre 3K bit in Pink Matter is growing on me like a weed. Why in the fuck haven't he and Big Boi gotten back together to grace the world with another Outkast album? Every guest spot he's done lately has slayed. I just listened to the new Rick Ross album and he blows it up on "911". Love that guy.

Dude, it's retarded.  Speakerboxx/Love Below was just so outrageously out there, and I loved Sir Lucious Left Foot.  I know we are expecting a new Big Boi album, but comeo 'Kast, get your shit together and record.

I think they just got burnt out on each other. Sucks, but they're both good solo, so I'll take what I can get.

I need to add my love and admiration for this album as well. I was turned onto by a friend recently, and it's easily the album of the year so far for me. Fantastic melodies, great voice, thoughtful lyrics, couldn't ask for more. Even the songs I don't listen to as much still aren't bad to listen to once their on. I can't say there's a real bad song on the entire album. It's great to see a new RnB face who isn't just talking about nonsense and is singing from the heart and taking chances. May I also add it's about time someone on my team came out in the RnB/Hip Hop community, and to still get praise and sell well is fantastic. And damn right about Pink Matter, the last 2 minutes with Andre 3000 just gets my head bobbing immediately. Great little groove. My favorite tracks are "Thinkin Bout You", "Lost", "Bad Religion", "Pink Matter", "Sweet Life", and "Forest Gump".  Throw in "Fertilizer" cause it's just so damn fun. Nice little interlude.

Yeah boooooy.  It's some engaging shit.  Love all the songs you mentioned.  I'd throw in "Super Rich Kids" too.  Not a fan of Odd Future really, but I love Earl Sweatshirt's spittin' it there.

I think that's the best part of Frank too, is I don't care at all for Odd Future and think Tyler whatever is a complete douche, but something about his association with them makes me like them slightly more. Not enough to get their stuff, but enough for me not to talk complete shit about them. He's so different sounding than the others, I need to see this man in concert asap.
