There are some of you on here that immediately know what this thread is going to be about and then there are the unlucky few who don't so I'll give a brief rundown on the EDF games:
1. Aliens attack the Earth with various spaceships, giant robots and kaiju (giant monsters).
2. Then they mutate the local insect population resulting in legions of giant ants and spiders.
3. You are a lone Earth Defense Force soldier with access to a ton of city demolishing weaponry.
4. Blast the motherfucking shit out of the invaders and save the planet for humanity.
That's it in a nutshell. These are Japanese B-movie influenced budget games that don't waste time with AAA level cutscenes and graphics, they are about one thing and one thing only, shooting things and blowing things up. I'm sorry, I meant to say shooting a ton of things and REALLY BLOWING THINGS UP.
This thread was initially going to be just about the upcoming EARTH DEFENSE FORCES 3 Portable (PSVita)
It drops in Japan on Septmember 27th and if there was ever a "killer app" for the Vita this would be it. This isn't just a straight port of EDF3 game that came out for the Xbox 360 a couple years ago it's got new weapons, new monsters/ships and of course the addition of Pale Wing, the jetpack sporting hottie from EARTH DEFENSE FORCES 2. Check out these great trailers that convey the mayhem that typically ensues:

EDF2 Portable came out last year for the PSP and I'm glad I imported it since it is one of the best games for that system to ever have been released. It's a shame this and the upcoming EDF3 Portable won't be seeing a North American release but I have heard that the upcoming EARTH DEFENSE FORCES 4 might see the light of day on North American consoles but if not I'll be importing that sucker post-haste because when you get hooked into the insane fun of the EDF universe you can't get enough.
And no I haven't forgotten about the American EDF spinoff INSECT ARMAGEDDON since it was a fun game in it's own right but the true EDF series is utlimately better and well worth your time to check out. In any case this thread will update about EDF3 Portable and EDF4 on a semi-regular basis.
Speaking of updates...here's some new screenshots from EDF3 Portable:
