"It's an ugly planet....A BUG PLANET!" The Semi-Official EARTH DEFENSE FORCES Thread

There are some of you on here that immediately know what this thread is going to be about and then there are the unlucky few who don't so I'll give a brief rundown on the EDF games:

1. Aliens attack the Earth with various spaceships, giant robots and kaiju (giant monsters).

2. Then they mutate the local insect population resulting in legions of giant ants and spiders.

3. You are a lone Earth Defense Force soldier with access to a ton of city demolishing weaponry.

4. Blast the motherfucking shit out of the invaders and save the planet for humanity.

That's it in a nutshell. These are Japanese B-movie influenced budget games that don't waste time with AAA level cutscenes and graphics, they are about one thing and one thing only, shooting things and blowing things up. I'm sorry, I meant to say shooting a ton of things and REALLY BLOWING THINGS UP

This thread was initially going to be just about the upcoming EARTH DEFENSE FORCES 3 Portable (PSVita)

1000

It drops in Japan on Septmember 27th and if there was ever a "killer app" for the Vita this would be it. This isn't just a straight port of EDF3 game that came out for the Xbox 360 a couple years ago it's got new weapons, new monsters/ships and of course the addition of Pale Wing, the jetpack sporting hottie from EARTH DEFENSE FORCES 2. Check out these great trailers that convey the mayhem that typically ensues:

EDF2 Portable came out last year for the PSP and I'm glad I imported it since it is one of the best games for that system to ever have been released. It's a shame this and the upcoming EDF3 Portable won't be seeing a North American release but I have heard that the upcoming EARTH DEFENSE FORCES 4 might see the light of day on North American consoles but if not I'll be importing that sucker post-haste because when you get hooked into the insane fun of the EDF universe you can't get enough.

And no I haven't forgotten about the American EDF spinoff INSECT ARMAGEDDON since it was a fun game in it's own right but the true EDF series is utlimately better and well worth your time to check out.  In any case this thread will update about EDF3 Portable and EDF4 on a semi-regular basis.

Speaking of updates...here's some new screenshots from EDF3 Portable:

EARTH DEFENSE FORCES 4 will be hitting Playstation 3/Xbox 360 in Japan in 2013 and according to FAMITSU it is 55% complete so I hope that means a Spring/Summer release.

Can't wait for the first pics/trailer for this one.

It's a fun title and if you can get it for cheap (it was a budget title at launch) it's an easy buy.  Blasting the crap out of giant bugs, robots and spaceships never gets old.

Some screenshots have surfaced and if these don't make you want to blast a hundred giant bugs in the face then why are you in this thread?

THE STORY:

Eight years ago, mankind thought they defeated the alien invaders in a battle set in Arizona. People focused on rebuilding cities using alien technology and peace lasted until June 28, 2025. Meanwhile, the giant invaders were amassing an new army deep underground. Welcome to EARTH DEFENSE FORCE 4.

Famitsu revealed two kinds of units in the game (see pics below). You can play as a Ranger who is an expert at using all kinds of weapons or a Wing Diver, a squad of female fighters that fly and use weapons made with the invader’s technology.  EARTH DEFENSE FORCE 4 has familiar enemies like giant acid spitting ants, spiders that can entangle players with a sticky web, and giant robots called Hectors. A new kind of spider called Retiarius creates nests between buildings. It’s based on the Joro Spider, a type of gold colored spider commonly found in Asia.

The above are all awesome but this last pic is my favorite:

Any concerns I had about this game being any different from the three titles that had come before it have been washed away.  Needless to say that I'm not waiting for a North American release this time around. This is an import/day one purchase for me.

This is my most anticipated game of 2013. Nothing else comes close.

If you've played EDF 2017 on the 360 you'd understand.  Being a Playstation man I never got the chance to play it but after playing EDF2 Portable on the PSP I was hooked on this series. If you enjoy kaiju movies and tokatsu TV shows (Ultraman, etc) you will enjoy the hell out of these games.

They're not AAA level games but they are well done budget games that are rife with Japanese B-movie insanity that are a lot of fun and very, very addictive.

I had a great time with EDF 2017 on the xbox. It really is the gaming equivalent of a B-movie; the graphics are middling-to-poor, the movement is clunky and there really is nothing to do but run around and make bugs blow up good. However, there are millions of bugs, the explosions are satisfyingly huge and it used scale wonderfully. there's one stage which recreates the Normandy landings, with you and your troops at the top of a cliff fending off waves of giant robots. Great fun.

There's a stage in EDF2 Portable on the PSP where it starts out with these two fairly weak baby Godzillas (they're not called that but it's fairly obvious) that are causing havoc so I take them both down with my rocket launcher and that's that right? Nope. A minute later there's horrified people running and screaming away as this nearly 600 story tall MegaGodzilla comes along and stomps entire city blocks into dust on its' way to destroy me.

Good times.

My copy of EDF3 Portable came today and it plays beautifully! Hearing my teammates screaming gung-ho stuff in Japanese is great as we're taking down nasty giant ants in the streets of Tokyo.

Lots of fun stuff happening on the EDF4 front so let's get to the good stuff shall we?

Earth Defense Force 4 has the standard giant ant exterminator and the Wing Diver for players that prefer to deal death from above. The Air Raider is Earth Defense Force 4′s support unit and demolitions specialist.

Air Raiders can drop a beacon that restore health for any units standing the beacon’s field.

You can also use a Lock On Marker weapon which increases the lock on speed and range for all allied units.

The Air Raider can attack enemies like Hectors by calling in a missile strike…

… or placing gunpods that automatically turn on when an enemy walks by.

Air Raiders also have an arsenal of explosives like remote controlled bombs.

One of the most interesting skills the Air Raider has is he can call a transport chopper to drop a vehicle! You can "summon" an APC that carries four players, a bike, rescue tank, and attack helicopter.

Earth Defense Force 4 has a new kind of Hector with weapons on both arms. Another new type of Hector can generate a force field. Earth Defense Force 2017′s Hectors are in the game too; they’re red and the new Hectors are green.

Now for something really interesting. For those who have played EDF3/2017 there was a mech you could use in the game that was kinda slow but it packed a machine gun. flamethrower AND a missile launcher so you could wreck some giant bug shit but good.  Well, in EDF4 they've improved on it quite a bit, introducing the

Vegalta BM03 Power Suit

This game is shaping up to be something pretty special I'd say.

Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable Invades PS Vita January 8th

+ Posted by Miki Takahashi // Assistant Producer, D3Publisher

Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable on PS Vita

EDF! EDF! EDF! We are excited to share the news today that Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable will be available as a digital download on PlayStation Vita at the beginning of the year. The game will be available on January 8th, 2013 in North America for $39.99 and players will get to experience all the intense action that the Earth Defense Force can endure.

What is really cool is that Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable is completely remastered from the original classic shooter (Earth Defense Force 2017) and with so many extras, players will truly get a new EDF experience that wasn’t possible before. Players will get to check out seven new levels plus dive into all the action with fan favorite Pale Wing, giving players the power to soar high over buildings in her jet pack and cause massive destruction from above.

You will also find some new enemies in the game, and blast them to smithereens with your choice of more than 230 weapons, including many new ones. For the first time, save the world with your friends in online multiplayer for up to four players in co-op and versus mode.

We look forward to hearing about your experiences with Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable and hope that you can save mankind from this insect infestation starting on January 8th! Good luck!

Believe me when I say that it's definitely worth the $40.00 price tag, and in other EDF news. EDF4/2025 will be hitting the shelves in Japan in March so hopefully that means it won't take long to hit North America after that.

EARTH DEFENSE FORCE 2017 Portable is OUT NOW in North America via PSN for the PSVita. Everything you loved about EDF2017 on the 360 with sharper graphics, new levels, new weapons and of course Pale Wing (who you unlock after beating the game on any difficulty). It's just as fun as the Japanese version that I have and it's a steal at $40 dollars. Highly recommended!

D3 Publisher has revealed today that EDF4 will be released in July in Japan, no word on the North American release date. I was going to wait for the domestic release but the release of this game coming in the same month as Del Toro's PACIFIC RIM is too perfect for words.

Additionally, it was also revealed via Famitsu that EDF4 boasts a new heavy soldier "Fencer" class:

- A deflective shield that cuts all damage taken while you have it readied, although it'll overheat and go offline if used for too long

- A blast-hole spear that fires high-pressure plasma into anything you can stab it into, destroying it from the inside. It's also got a side thruster that lets you thrust-dash around at high speed

- A handheld gatling gun, a heavy weapon that your suit's just powerful enough to carry around. It takes time to start up and doesn't boast tremendous accuracy, but its rapid-fire properties are reliable in a pinch

- A vibro-drive hammer that smashes anything in the vicinity

- An armor-piercing hand cannon that deals a powerful blow, but leaves you unguarded for about a second after firing due to recoil absorption

*******

OH YEAH!

Finally, some great photos of the new Fencer class have surfaced and they're pretty awesome:

Oh I know you've been waiting for an update on what EDF4/2025 has in store for the brave men and women of the EDF. The wait is over with some new images that should get your attention:

You know that in each EDF game that there are legions of giant ants and spiders that are literally everywhere ? Well, occasionally you will encounter Kaiju sized versions of them:

But those titans of terror aren't the only things that are threatening the good people of Earth...look, up in the sky....THERE BE DRAGONS!

Lest you think the EDF are unprepared for this armada of creatures spawned from the pits of an alien inferno. Let me present to you the BMX10 Power Suit:

The Future of Giant Bug Extermination? Looking pretty damn bright.

I'll be playing this in two weeks time and I'm so fucking stoked it's not even funny.  Someone better tell GdT that the perfect PACIFIC RIM tie-in game has already been made.

EDF! EDF! EDF!

Headless Fett, I see from the trailer there are...Attack Helicopters, Mech Suits, Tanks etc.  When you finally get to...Join the EDF in...Mortal Kombat against the invaders, I would like to know if you start as an...Underpowered soldier, and the vechicles and meck suits are available later?  The pics are very...Cool!

Thread Starter

All four classes (Ranger, Wing Diver, Air Raider and Fencer) are selectable at the beginning of the game. All vehicles/mechs are accessible by all of them (with the exception of the Fencer for a few since he's the heavy hitter of the EDF). As your character wipes out scores of bugs/robots/whatever they drop either Armor, Health or Weapon power ups.The Armor power ups help you take less damage over the course of the game and trust me when I say you'll be needing them! The Weapon power ups are the ones that unlock the more powerful gear in the game. Of course you have to play through each level of difficulty (Easy, Normal, Hard, Hardest and Inferno) to get the better weapons which adds to the replay value that the EDF games have.

New and amazingly awesome trailer!

GIANT ROBOT!

MEGA GIANT SPIDER!

If anyone wants me I'll be sitting by mailbox waiting for my copy of EDF4 to arrive.

As I've said before, this niche series is easily the best Japanese B-movie shooter series ever made. Not that there haven't been other attempts at it but the EDF series has really captured the feel of being on the ground of a Toho Studios flick while ramping up the insanity (and destruction porn fap boom pow) in each sequel.

It's not the most polished series (it's a budget title series in Japan) but it is easily the most fun and addictive that I've ever played.  I highly suspect when it hits North America in 2014 that it will be buried by XBone/PS4 releases with AAA production values and all the bells and whistles that come with them.

As for my enthusiasm for this series it's a game I really enjoy. Is that so wrong, Jacob?

The new Air Raider class is a good example of the over the top nature of this game. You can call in vehicles/mechs as well air strikes, artillery strikes, missile strikes and, my personal favorite, ORBITAL LASER STRIKES.  Now that's how you deal with giant monsters in Tokyo, bitch!

Okay, no more postings until I get the damn game.

So totally worth the wait.  Pure Japanese sci-fi B-movie madness once again and I fear when it comes out in February that will just be a blip due to the PS4/XBone(r) stuff hitting the shelves.

Ladies and gentlemen....your reason for getting a PS4 has finally arrived:

Not only will EDF 4.1 have better sharper graphics, better framerate and all the content from EDF 4 and the DLC it will also feature a new giant kaiju and a new giant robot for the EDF to punch it in the face with!

You're welcome.
