The season is coming to a close. Even though some of you haven't seen some of the limited release goodies, I figured I'd ask, what do you think is the best film you've seen all summer?

I snuck in a late April release, hope no one minds.

Here are ten I thought people would favor. If there's another I'm missing, let's talk about it!
The Avengers
Beasts of The Southern Wild
The Dark Knight Rises
The Imposter
Killer Joe
Magic Mike
Moonrise Kingdom
Prometheus
Searching For Sugar Man
Sound Of My Voice

Personally casting my vote for the Wes Anderson picture. What say you?

Beasts of the Southern Wild by a flooded country mile. Although I lurrrrrve Moonrise Kingdom.

On the documentary front, it's The Imposter, no question. Sublime film.

Best: Avengers.  Only one I bothered to see more than once.

Worst: Rock of Ages.

Biggest disappointment: Prometheus.

Most want to see: Beasts of the Southern Wild.  It is coming to Palmy as part of a film festival and I'm really looking forward to it.

Our release schedules are different, so haven't seen all of those. From the list, I'd pick Avengers. Personal favorite recent release is Cabin in the Woods.

Only two of these have come out over here. So in a contest between The Avengers and Magic Mike, I gotta go with The Avengers in spite of my Soderbergh fanboyism. But I'm not voting in the poll as it would be bad form.

It's really neck and neck between Cabin in the Woods and Moonrise Kingdom.

But fuck, I really did enjoy Wes Anderson's latest so I'll say that's my favorite...so far.

I'm going to classify these differently since it's just awkward having stuff like Batman compared to Moonrise Kingdom.

Best Blockbuster: The Avengeres

Best Film: Moonrise Kingdom

I still need to See: Beast of the Southern Wild

THE AVENGERS all the way. Easily the most entertaining film I've seen this year so far.

It was head vs. heart and heart and heart won, so it's The Avengers.  Moonrise Kingdom is the better film, but Avengers is just so enormously, smile-inducingly entertaining.

Beasts of the Southern Wild just started playing here, so im gonna hold off till I get that sorted. But at the moment, I'm having the same crisis between Moonrise Kingdom and The Avengers, except they're BOTH heart picks. My head pick would be Prometheus.

Dark Knight Rises of the ones I've seen. Perfect blend of popcorn entertainment, depth and pay off. Avengers was amusing enough but pretty forgettable, Prometheus was underwhelming and I just couldn't get into Magic Mike.

The Avengers

Jumping on THE AVENGERS train, also, but it was a real close call for MOONRISE.

I know I'm being that guy, but... y'all need to see more movies.

I think this was a bad thread to start if you weren't ready to face the fact that popular movies are popular.

On what basis do you compare The Avengers to Beasts of the Southern Wild?  I'd rather just use my vote to declare Prometheus the worst and avoid the issue.

The hope was to spur discussion about some of the smaller films. Though I was hoping the mainstream popularity of Moonrise Kingdom would help it's particular genius at least compete with the conveyor-belt efficiency of The Avengers.

Magic Mike made $100 million! It's from Steven Soderbergh! I'm assuming some of you were more interested in that (and satisfied?) than in the seventh theatrical Batman film in twenty years.

No option for Battleship ?

I had to go with The Avengers because I only saw that and Prometheus due to a sharp economic downturn.  I would have seen TDKR but I was still ailing from being miffed by a certain science fiction film, that shall remain unnamed, that was not only a disappointment but grievously implausible and sometimes downright silly.

Technically I should have chosen "Other" because I saw The Cabin in the Woods in a second-run theater in June, but I assumed the poll meant "summer releases in the theater."

I was gonna go with Mirror, Mirror but this thread isn't called "The best movie of the YEAR".

The Dark Knight Rises.  Easily for this viewer.

Magic Mike was a suprise, yet not...because it's Soderbergh and I worship at the altar that is Soderbergh.

Missed Beasts of the Southern Wild but it's on the radar big time.

Oh, you poor, deluded, optimistic fool.  I actually voted for Beasts, if it makes you feel better, but The Avengers is sort of the archetypical "summer movie" so it's maybe appropriate that it gets a boost.  If I was ranking everything I saw this summer (spring in parentheses) I'd probably go:

Beasts/Avengers

(Cabin In The Woods)

Moonrise Kingdom

Dark Knight Rises

Killer Joe

Prometheus

(Detention)

It was a pretty good summer all told, as those top 4 are great-to-fantastic, I need to give TDKR a chance with a non-shitty theatrical experience, Killer Joe will certainly stay with me for a long time even if its hard to say I "liked" it, and Prometheus had some great effects and 3D which ultimately served to make even madder at its utter storytelling ineptitude.

Circle gets the square.

Sound of My Voice, The Impostor, and Killer Joe havent even come out here yet, Gabe. I've never even heard of Searching For Sugar Man. EVERYBODY saw The Avengers, most of them loved it. Thats not willful hatred/ignorance of smaller films, thats just sheer numbers.

For what its worth, I fucking loved Magic Mike, and if this was a poll that allowed for ranking, it'd be over TDKR. But it's not.

Really nothing much to do about The Avengers as much as the surprise lack of general popularity for Moonrise Kingdom and (BOX OFFICE SMASH!) Magic Mike around here.

Sound Of My Voice is likely coming to DVD soon, right? Spooky movie, I liked it very much. Brit Marling wrote and starred, and it's a lot better than last year's "Another Earth."

Isn't either/or "The Imposter" and "Killer Joe" on VOD too? "The Imposter" might be the spookiest, most fucked-up doc of the year, but to be honest, no idea how it was released/distributed.

Searching For Sugar Man, not sure if that got a VOD release or not, though there was some decent press coverage of the film. Great, touching doc about a "lost" musician, and the story behind his supposedly-tragic disappearance. Seventies folk guy named Rodriguez, very much a Dylan-like prophet of the streets. I had never heard of him, so I honestly thought the movie was some sort of elaborate put-on at first, but then it becomes quite affecting. I can't say much without spoiling things.

Whatever the case, just trying to get some conversation going about the less-the-usual suspects.

The Moonrise Kingdom Post-Release is pretty spoogey. Trust me, the love is here.

And this now reminds that I probably should get on seeing Another Earth, even if it is as weaksauce as I've been warned.

Then maybe start a thread about them instead of setting up a poll that seems designed solely so you could heave an exasperated sigh at the results?

Trust me, I start more than enough threads.
