Granted, sometimes you really do need a lot of people (that's a lot of content to build, even if the overall development is probably helped rather than impeded by a smaller team,) and there's always the possibility that they're full of shit, but frequently a small skunkworks-type operation can blow the pants off the behemoths if they really put their minds to it.

That's very true! I mean, it's all very well saying "players can do this, this and this onboard the ships" but, let's face it, everyone's going to want to be Captain, right?

I'm still wondering about their claims of being able to have millions of players on a single shard. As far as I know, even Star Citizen isn't claiming to be that ambitious.

Have ya'll checked out Angels Fall First?

It's geared toward the fps/combat aspect of space but it has large fleet battles, fighters, ship boarding and planet side infantry and armor combat.

Very much Battlefield 2142.

Question:

What happens when you make a game that's built entirely around multiplayer and DLC? A game that's SO heavily built around DLC, in fact, that the DLC was announced before players even knew what the main game was about? What happens when everyone says "Fuck this nonsense" and walks away, leaving empty servers and mountains of unsold DLC in their wake?

Answer:

You may now join me in pointing and laughing

I love Evolve. I've always loved Evolve. I loved it despite trivial silly DLC controversy about shit nobody needs to buy.

I was very sad for the last few months because the population of the game I loved was so dead I couldn't start a game, not even once over the past few months.

:'(

But then something wonderful happened! They released a major patch that reworks gameplay and all kinds of cool stuff, and makes the game free to play so I have 11,000 people to play with instead of 0.

Fuck the haters, I'm creaming my jeans over here.

You know what did Evolve much better than Evolve? Dead By Daylight. I don't even know what their DLC plans are NOW, let alone six months before the game released. But, hey, they sold the game purely on the main game itself and did pretty well by it. Even I bought a copy!

Whoa whoa whoa, put the brakes on the hyperbole train brah. Evolve may have had some shit dlc stuff, but the two games are miles apart in quality. Ocean's even. One game is finely polished in need of population, and the other...fucking early access shovelware that feels like something the devs would have to sue Jim Fucking Sterling Son for disparaging on his youtube channel.

Battleborn should go free 2 play. And Battlefront on pc, jesus that was a stinker purchase of the year.

Nintendo's new console concept?

From http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2016-07-26-nx-is-a-portable-console-with-detachable-controllers:
NX will function as a high-powered handheld console with its own display. So far so normal - but here's the twist: we've heard the screen is bookended by two controller sections on either side, which can be attached or detached as required.

The image is just a mock-up of the idea.  It would also have a docking station for playing on the TV. I think that could be cool.

I had hoped the NX would be Nintendo's non-gimmick system.  Just a straight up powerful console with traditional controls to play Nintendo AND third party games.  But I'm at least heartened to see only one screen and traditional controls.  If its powerful enough, it'd be a nice answer to half-measure the Wii-U felt like when it came to being a handheld.  And I'm going to need some MadCatz add-on to attach the two controller halves when playing sans-screen.

Don't hate the idea.  At a reasonable price, if its deemed powerful enough to play modern stuff, bundled with Zelda, it could be the first Nintendo console I'd buy at launch since the N64 (which technically, I didn't buy at launch, but my awesome parents got me one for Christmas).

Of course, now that I'm kinda excited about it, Nintendo will announce that its no more powerful than the WiiU, the controllers are also motion-controllers and you have to use the touchscreen with your foot to play Mario Kart.

I just don't see any % in Nintendo trying to go head-to-head with Sony/Microsoft at this point. As tough as I think the handheld route might be at this point, at least they wouldn't be up against two companies that have been doing what Nintendon't for 2 generations of consoles.

The NX better be fucking ergonomic. All these rectangle clunky DS shit needs to go. I already own a Nintendo NX, out here in the Bay Area we call it the Nvidia Shield. Was hoping for beefier gpu power. Just how good can NuZelda look on a mobile gpu? I don't even want to know how expensive cartridges are going to be in regions that aren't America. Hell, it got to the point where N64 games were running upwards around $110-125 not including taxes. RIP in Peace Canada/Australia nintendo diehards.

We Happy Few is busting out on Early Access now available on Steam. I thought I could wait until it was at 1.0 state but eh, fuck it it could be as cool as that E3 preview. Downloading that right now.

Also on Steam and PS4, both the Marvel Ultimate Alliance's are for sale at $39.99 each...ports better be immaculate at that price, geesh.

I just might be one of those affluent douches hitting F5 next Tuesday morning and stick it in my ITX build. But after how clumsy my experience was with the OG Titan X I'm more partial to skipping it this time and waiting for the Ti variant. OG Titan X sounded fantastic on paper, massive core count, lots of vram....but the thing would downthrottle horribly mid game once it reached it's temperature threshold resulting in stutters while galloping around in Witcher. And so far Nvidia has shown these Pascal chips are lame at getting consistent overclocks. Hell right now there are several threads of tears devoted to the overpriced EVGA Classified ($750) crashing when people try push it to the same clock speed my G1 reached on its own naturally. I am lol.

That Star Wars VR Demo...I might snag my own kit and clear out my office just for that instead of wasting money on a Titan.

NX.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh why god why...why....why. Why.

Nintendo wants me to buy a new system that is equal to, or possibly even LESS powerful than the Wii U? Are you shitting me.

If this is the case, no wonder they showed the Wii U version of Zelda at E3! Who could have guessed the NX version would be WORSE when Aounuma and Reggie said it would be "different graphics, same experience".

I can't even with this. Boy oh boy, I can't wait for the next big 3D Mario game with worse graphics than Mario 3D World had in 2013. Boy, that's something to get pumped about.

This is going to take some time to process. I've been a big supporter of the Wii U and it's software library, but this is just about a step too far if it's real. I have no interest in a glorified 3DS succesor, I barely have any games for my 3DS as it is.

Aaaah Nintendo...I kind of admire the sheer WTF-factor present whenever you release something. Marching to the sound of your own crazy drum. It's admirable if not sustainable.

I think Nintendo needs to go the SEGA route and just focus on developing software. If they can't compete with Sony and Microsoft on a technical level they can make their IP's available to a much wider market and make some INSANE money. Imagine a Pokemon or Zelda or Metroid game that makes proper use of the available next-gen technology instead of hardware that's already a bit long in the tooth. People would eat that shit up and ask for seconds.

Nintendo makes strange choices. I don't understand them. I'm not sure they even understand themselves but they clearly love the handheld market.

Maybe I'll just stay in denial until September. The certainty in Eurogamer's phrasing is a bit off, since none of these "multiple sources" will name themselves, and they don't even know the actual specs, other than a mystery Nvidia chip. Their speculation on how the dock and detachable controllers work are all too vague to draw any real conclusions.

At least I have Zelda for Wii U to look forward to in March. It's probably done already, but they need the extra 7 months to finish downgrading the NX version enough to work on an 8-watt powered portable device with no cooling fan.

Considering the niche and yes sometimes risque nature of the games I play I prefer them on the Vita/PS4. The last Nintendo system I played regularly was the N64 then along came the PSOne and my gaming life was changed forever.  Been a Sony man ever since.

Hahahahahahahaha...ahhhh. The Japanese never disappoint, I swear.

Years ago I had a friend that worked at an arcade and as he moved his way up the hierarchy he was allowed to take more risks with the games they brought in.

Enter Boong Ga Boong Ga.

Needless to say it was a second hand cabinet and ended up being more trouble than it was worth but this Korean masterpiece gives the Japanese a run for their money on the weird.

Have a fun! Enjoy!

I'll let you look this monster up yourselves.

For those who want a console experience that isn't the NX, Shiguru has the system for you: NES Classic Mini Edition

That old news has already been revealed earlier on the boards. That link up there is the nowinstock tracker so you can be notified if when amazon/bestbuy/toysrus make them available for order/preorder. Best to just get it over with since there's no backwards compatibility next time around on NX. Then you can go pick up the SNES Classic Mini a year from now, then the Classic N64 Mini two years, and then the classic Gamecube Mini (which is just old inventory of unsold Gamecubes).

I can only hope the rumor about Nvidia holding off Tegra 2 for NX has weight. First Tegra wasn't bad and did some modern games and last gen stuff okay. But man. I don't care about mobility and having to go outside to justify a wonky console. It'll stay where it belongs, under my 95" Curved OLED 8K monitor I got from woot.com

Calling it right now: StarFox NX has you using the detachable controller and you fly it around like we did with our Xwings/Tiefighters way back when. And it will only fire weapons if you make the pewpewpew sound. Lucasarts should do something like that with Microsoft's hololens, with proper Star Wars ip usage.

You know, I keep hearing this for, like what, 10 years now, and the more I hear it, the more nonsensical it sounds.  Look at SEGA now--you really think that's where Nintendo should be? Part of the reason why Nintendo can make the games they make is because they put their resources directly into their own platform instead of spreading themselves thin making multi-platform games.

I'm just as apprehensive about the NX as everyone else, but this makes more sense to me than Nintendo going the software route (never going to happen) or Nintendo making a console that's directly competitive with Sony and Microsoft. Because, as someone who respects Nintendo for their creativity and game design, them throwing their hat into the nightmare that is AAA gaming would be complete bullshit.

Nvidia Settles GTX 970 3.5 Gig VRAM Classaction.

If you owned that card you get a whole $30 for Nvidia's deception. If you were a lawyer for the case, you get 1.3 million.
Quote:
Graphics card manufacturer Nvidia agreed to a preliminary settlement that will resolve claims in a group of proposed class action lawsuits that center around allegations that the company misled consumers about the performance and storage capabilities of its product.

The overall settlement amount was not publicly disclosed within court papers, however Nvidia agreed to pay all consumers who purchased the GTX 970 graphics card and indicated there would not be a cap on the total amount it would pay consumers.

Nvidia graphics cards cost approximately $350 and the anticipated $30 payout was calculated to represent a portion of the cost of the storage and performance capabilities the consumers thought they were obtaining in the purchase of the product, according to the proposed settlement.

This Early Access game looks like shit but the core gameplay looks solid, and does a good job at replicating the paranoia of something like The Thing (especially when there's more players later in the video). I particularly love the fact it gives you different objectives, so you're constantly doing something.

Worth keeping an eye on. I hope the creators continue to work on it.

Nvidia unveiled/launched the mobile line of Pascal GPU's for laptop's which for the most part are not gimped compared to their desktop iterations. So now everyone and their dog are releasing some beefy laptop gaming options. Go ahead, laugh at the smucks who just spent $1000-1400 for a mobile 960m or 970.

Buying Guide of In stock and available Pascal Laptops sorted by class.

A quick shorthand: 1060 chips are equal to the GTX 980, can handle today's triple A games at 60 fps easy. 1070's are the 980 Ti equivilant, they can handle games at around 80-90 fps (and dip their toes into 4k territory but just barely). 1080 GPU's hit around 110-140 fps in games with all settings maxed (unless its unoptimized garbage like Ark or Arma3), can hit 50-60 fps at 4k with adjusted user settings.

A good chunk of all these launch laptops have Gsync built in. Which means no frame tearing when the camera/action moves fast. It's fantastic.

Still, wait for official reviews before just blindly buying any of these, but damn beefy desktop performance on the go hitting the price range of $1500-2000 is not bad.

Holy Shit.

This has to be the biggest middle finger response to a fanbase and series creator in years; I mean, they essentially took MGS and turned it into the most generic, cliched game possible.
