The Old Gent' would be 112 years old today. I know this probably doesn't mean a thing to most of you, but I had to mention it. I'm gonna go watch all of my lovecraft movies 'til I pass out. Or go Mad. Or both.

Happy Birthday H.P. Lovecraft, you kick ass.

HPL, in his own quaint, wacky way, was a fucking Bad-Ass.

Thanks for that! Damn, I almost forgot ... Maybe we can all celebrate his 115th birthday with the release of Guillermo del Toro's AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNES? How fucking cool would that be!

For a rabid racist and anti-semite, he sure as fuck scared the crap outta me with that story "Brown's Portrait."

You mean 'Pickman's Model'?
Maybe 'The Picture in the House'?

Never seen or heard of 'Brown's Portrait'.

And not to be an apologist or anything, but in context, his racism pretty accurately reflected the overall xenophobia of the states(and everywhere else) at the time.

Understandable. Doesn't make it acceptable, but understandable.

And the name of the story WAS "Pickman's Model."

Well I'm going to re-read The Case of Charles Dexter Ward for the occasion. Somebody sure needs to find HPL's essential saltes and recite the formula of Borellus over them...

To be fair, it seems Lovecraft's political and sociological views evolved and matured to a great degree in the latter part of his life. In his later, progressive years he had some withering things to say of the Republicans, a party whose views would once have been not conservative enough for his antiquated Tory worldview.

In any case, I believe now more than ever that the the best thing ever to come out of HPL's writing career is the writer Ramsey Campbell, after he grew out of his early Lovecraft-imitating stage.
