Could someone please tell me why Guillermo Del Toro rocks so hard?

WHY?!?!?! This question plagues me at night. I can't sleep!
It's something in the burritos...

He's living every film geeks dream: he's making the movies he wants to make, the way he wants to make them. The reason he rocks SO FUCKING HARD is because he hasn't let a single thing go to his head.

I agree Johnny. Plus he is creative and has a great visual style. I'm definitely a fan.
Plus, he lunches with all the right people.

Actually, Johnny, that's exactly why I like the guy so much.

My question was more of a rhetorical question in order to get the discussion happening... and you hit the nail on the head.

The guy is so totally bullshit free. I respect that. Expecially in an era of Hollywood where there are no heroes. Del Toro restores my faith in the studio system. That you can make the movies that people want to see. For the longest time I felt that if no one was making the entertainment that I was interested in, I'd have to do it myself... but finally, someone came along and took some of the load off my hands.

His plate is full and I can't wait to see what the future brings. There is no way that Hellboy can suck.

He's a smart motherfucker, too.

Not that ive ever had the pleasure of meeting him but all u hear are good things.
And when he is talking about a movie, any of his movies, u always get how excited he is to be doing it.
Almost like he cant quite believe he is doing this for a living.
I tip my hat to ya Mr. Del Toro, long may u reign.

I liked Devil's Backbone quite a bit, but it took me a long time to get over the hype about it being a horror movie. It's not really and when it failed to scare me (though the ghost is one of the most creative, not to mention creepiest, things I've ever seen) I had to take some time to readjust to the story. It wasn't bad by any means... but I think I was expecting more because the reviews I was reading (mostly at AICN) were saying that it was "terrifying", and it wasn't.

I think there is a mathmatical formula somewhere for why Guillermo Del Toro rocks so hard.
Mimic had balls of admantium steel. You know why? Toro broke the rule. He

(spoilers I guess if you actually haven't seen Mimic)

lets the kids in the movie get killed by the monster. You NEVER see that in horror films. I was really impressed that he let them die. Now if we could just get Steven Spielberg to do that in one of his Jurassic Park movies.

Ya got one of those for the meaning of life?

His being a nice guy and not altered by Hollywood bullshit doesn't make me like Mimic or Blade 2 any better. Like the man all you want, but his films do nothing for me.

I went out and bought The Devil's Backbone this last weekend to support del Toro for his statement of doing Lovecraft his way or no way. I loved it. It's such a subtle and beautiful film that also scared the hell out of me in a couple of places. I am now a fan. I like del Toro doing an action/horror film like Blade 2 to get some clout and the doing something more for himself. I've never seen Cronos but I plan to buy that DVD as soon as it comes out. Is Cronos a more subtle film like The Devil's Backbone? I even liked Mimic even though those meddling kids over at Dimension had to mess with del Toro's way of doing it.
Yeah, Cronos is along the lines of Devil's Backbone. Not as good imo, but still good. Old school horror.

I think alot of the Del Toro appeal, at least to me, is the untapped potential. When I look at Blade II, then look at Devil's Backbone, I know that there's something coming down the road that's gonna be an absolute classic. It's kinda like those Lovecraft monsters that are so much scarier because you never really get a good glimpse of them. Which is not to say that DBB, Cronos and Blade II aren't cool as shit (I think Blade II isn't really that great, but he definitely elevated it into something cooler than the script provided), but there's something even better...waiting.

Because he cares in a way that few grababuck filmmakers do these days. Because he wants only to make the films that he would have wanted to see as a kid, and still wants to see. Because he won't compromise that vision to become an accepted part of the establishment. And because he still thinks movies are magic, or at least should be.

But mostly just because he cares.

I'm confused...it wasn't a horror movie, it didn't scare you, but it did creep you out with one of the creepiest ghosts you've seen on film...what's not a horror movie about that again? Is 1963's the Haunting not a horror movie in your opinion? I'm not being combatative, I'm just wondering what criteria it failed to meet for you.

I thought it was a horror movie/subgenre ghost story with all the effective qualities of that subset. And the historical/dramatic parts of the story didn't make me think it wasn't being a ghost story anymore.

Anyway, I loved the film. It's okay if you didn't, but I'm just wondering.

I agree, he seems like a nice guy, but I've yet to see anything really extraordinary from him. The films are just entertaining without being spectacular.

I hate to have to correct your math, Dan...

Geek Love + Huge Talent (x Lack Of Comprimise) + Funny As Hell Squared / By His Huge Backlog of Intended Films = Del Toro's Hard Rockiness

The man has a serious Asian film habit, BTW. He asked me whether 'Parasite Eve' was any good and I had to shake my head vigorously 'NO'. He patted me on the back and said, "Hey thanks! You saved me $25.00!". I said, "You're welcome! Can I be in your next movie?" He laughed and just as I was going to tell him that I was serious Ryan, HAM, SJR, Johnny and girlcreeture (not in that order) came up and he was distracted.

Listening to the man talk about what he loves so much is fascinating. Truly.

Bastard. frown

I always keep hearing that Dimension screwed with Del Toro's vision of "Mimic" and he couldn't do it the way he wanted. I was just curious, what exactly did he want to do? I enjoyed "Mimic" quite a bit, and I'm sure if Del Toro had total freedom on that film it would have been better? Anybody know what his true vision for "Mimic" was?

Actually I missed lunch... Didn't find out about it until afterwards. I just did a little shopping with him.

Got a cool picture with him, Mike Mignola and myself though.

I have not seen a single one of the man's films and yet I think he rocks.

Proof he is rockable. Un shakable. If there was a mayor of Hard Rockness, he would be it. He would be the President of the Hard Rockness states of Hard Rockness.

I don't know...

Someone want to 'splain how Devil's Backbone was Lovecraft?

Mainly NONE of his movies have EVER sucked. I think Mimic is his worst movie, but really it's better than half of other horror movies out there. You know your good when a movie comes out the same time as your movies thats trying to ride off of the success of your movie. Right when Mimic came out, Relic came out. Plus, he has rocked the balls off most all of Hollywoods Horror directors. They have been taken down by one cool Mexican Director. Also, give the man a metal for having the longest to-due list I have ever seen! I can't wait for em to come out!!

I like his work so much I am Guillermo in my Spanish 1. I was thinking of Frederico (after the great director of 8 1/2) but when Guillermo came by I had to use it! ^_)^;;

I got your back, Pox. Del Toro hasn't shown me shit yet either.

Bill Lustig is a nice cat to hang with too, but...
Poxy, have you seen The Devils Backbone yet? Or even Cronos?? Those are two excellent movies from Del Toro. Mimic, isn't much of a Del Toro movie (like Dune isn't much of a Lynch movie) and I haven't seen Blade 2 yet. But he is a good director, and from what I hear a helluva nice guy.

*Pulls out chainsaw* Anybody got any gas??? Oh well. Your in luck this time buddy. wink

Seriously. It's OK if you don't like his stuff. As with anything else your mileage may vary. I think he rocks!!

No to your questions, but having seen Mimic and Blade 2, I'm not exactly inspired to see the other two.

And hey, Ed Wood was uncompromising and making the kinds of films he wanted to see too.
'Mimic' and 'Blade II' are so very different from 'Cronos' and 'The Devil's Backbone'. I highly recommend you at least view 'The Devil's Backbone' before you write del Toro off.
I h-h-h-hated Blade II, couldn't stand it all. But The Devil's Backbone is damn cool, and Mimic has an okay first section, it just devolves.
