Bargin Bin Tech Deals (Another cheap-ass chewer thread)

Seeing that both the video games and the DVD/Blu-ray forums have a variation on this I thought I'd complete the trifecta and add a tech bargin thread.


Funnily enough the deal I've come across isn't really tech, but a desk toy and this is the best forum I could think of to share the deal.

You know Buckyballs, those little magnets that are soon to be outlawed because parents don't read the warnings and give them to their kids. Their website is currently selling them right now for a screaming deal.

Thanks for the heads up.

 

Minor correction, maybe.  I put in the promo code and while it does cut 60% off, it doesn't result in free shipping unless you buy 2 or more sets of them.  Still a good deal.

I've been keeping my eyes peeled for a solid state drive for a while now and this week has proven to be interesting because a lot of prices just dropped nearly across the board.

My "if money wasn't an option" pick is the Samsung 830 512gb because of this multi-page comparison review. Though the OCZ Vertex 4 beats it out by a hair, I heard horror stories about OCZ's quality and Samsung has one of the best reputations in reliability.

Another thing I noticed about that review is that Crucial's M4 seemed to come out in a very solid third place, even beating out the 830 in some areas.

So today I do some searching on the deal sites I visit and see that Crucial's 512gb M4 ssd has dropped from $410 on Amazon to $349. It is now a whole $200 cheaper than the Samsung's 830 and damn tempting.

The slower drives are also dropping in price. If you don't mind a speed drop OCZ's Agility 4 series has been falling in price as well. Here is the Agility 4 in a review pitted against Crucial's slower V4 drive

The Agility beats Crucial's budget offering hands down.

The 512gb Agility 4 is $299 at amazon right now

Now I've only checked up on the prices of the 512gb models because that is what I'm interested in, but I'm sure there are some good deals to be had in the other capacity options as well.

For those who are using the beta of Windows 8, is it worth it?

Whoa.  You can upgrade XP directly to 8?  Wondering why that wasn't possible with 7.

 

At any rate I'm still in love with 7.  Everything I've seen of 8 feels like they're trying to push it in a direction I don't care for.

Those looks like loads of fun, and it makes me angry that they'd be banned. That is not how society should work, banning harmless novelties simply because the least intelligent among us might misuse them.

Damn--Micro Center had an upgrade up for $38.88 but now I'm getting the ol' 404 error for the link.  As for the upgrade version, I'm assuming you can "hack" this one similar to the W7 upgrades where you can install it as a brand new "full" version.  Microsoft knew about that hack but never closed the loop I'm assuming because they know we all pretty much own a copy of Windows somewhere.

Hold on to your hats because I just found the biggest screaming deal of the next few months, if not year.

A Battle Tested* Red One MX camera body with SSD module is selling for $4000 off of Red's website. There you go, a professional major motion picture 4k camera for under five grand. if you are at all serious about filmmaking and have a film in the pipeline within the next year or two jump on this NOW. Seriously. You can pick up the lenses and peripherals later when they become availabe.

And just in case you might doubt what sort of life this camera might have, let me remind you that 4k TVs are only just beginning to be made and quite a few major theater chains are still only projecting in 1080p. There is life in that camera yet and if you get it in the PL mount with PL lenses when it does become time to update 5 or 6 years down the line, you'll be set and only need the body and not the kit.

Might as well point this out

Best Buy is selling $100 iTunes gift cards for $80. Both online and in store. Be quick because I can't find any info on how long this sale will last.

These gift cards credit your apple account $100 and can be used across all of their digital content platforms. So it good for iTunes, The iOS App Store, and the Mac App Store.

Getting these cards when they are on sale like this is the only way to get any sort of discount on Apple software such as Final Cut Pro X and other things only available through the app store.

I've never seen the $100 card go for less than $80 in the past, so if you are thinking about jumping on this do it because there is little hope in waiting for the price to drop even more.

Canon's online store has some screaming deals on refurbished DSLRs right now.

The 18 megapixel T3i with 18 to 55mm lens is $419
The plain old 12 megapixel T3 with the same lens is only $329

And what some sites are calling the best consumer compact camera of the year, The PowerShot SX260 HS is $167 refurbished.
