FRANCHISE ME: PREDATOR - Page 2

On blu ray no less!

I eagerly await your AVP:R installment.

I was watching Predator 2 on tv yesterday. I've always had lots of problems with it, my biggest being that when the Predator loses his helmet The POV shots are still in heat vision. Did the film makers forget about the red blurry vision they showed in the original? At least Predators got that part right.

I'm looking forward to the 2nd installment of this franchise me. Predator 2 to me has a couple of cool moments (predator sparing a pregnant woman, the new hunting gear, trophy room) but I can't get past the sloppy film making.

"Predator 2" would have worked much better with a different leading man. Glover is good in the "Lethal Weapon" movies, but there's no way he comes across as the "ultimate cop" to hunt in the city, the way Schwarzenegger came across as the "ultimate soldier" to hunt in the jungle.

Agreed. I like Glover as an actor but he really was mis cast here. The role needed someone like Michael Jai White, or whoever his 1990 equivalent would be.

I find Glover's casting to be quite fun, actually. The first movie gave us pretty much the best super soldier versus Predator casting you could get and it would've been boring (and failed) if they tried to match it. Not to get oddly... political here, but there's something interesting about casting an older, African American actor whose body language has kind of an aloofness to it in contrast to what we got prior. It only adds to the odd charm of it being a sci-fi film, which always seem to be driven by white casts, that takes place in a suped-up crime-driven Jamaican-terrorized 1997 LA.

I don't think I even remotely conveyed what I was trying to get across there "but, ah, well... there it is."

I agree with Shaun here.  While I take the point that he wasn't in his physical prime when he did this movie, I think people associate him way too much with Lethal Weapon, where he was playing older than his real age.  I would hesitate to say he was playing against type as Murtaugh because he is an actor more than a "star" that has a particular role that he is perceived to be more suited for, but I think a lot of folk forget that the dude was a complete badass in Silverado and Witness 5 years prior to this.  It seems to be a lot about perception and audience expectations.  Also having a strong black lead in a scifi/fantasy/adventure movie is refreshing.  To have him be a "generic tough cop" without any, shall we say, cartoony "urban" characteristics, was also a nice touch.

Well, I think I put forward an even less articulate argument than Shaun.  Let's stick to what Jeff Goldblum says.

I fucking loathe PREDATOR 2.  I can't wait for Josh to (hopefully) eviscerate it.

I'm right with you there.  The best thing about that movie was that it made me avoid Fox sci-fi action franchise flicks for decades.  I've never seen Alien 3, Alien: Resurrection, or either of the AvP flicks.

Well, that, and the soundtrack.  I dig the soundtrack.  But we'll wait for Josh.

Sorry guys, wait for P2 is going to be a little longer. Had wanted to get it up before Fantastic Fest, but I'm off to Austin in mere moments. Soooon!

Too bad predators the robert rodriguez one what a waste he fucked up all hope let's see bad cast plot for the series .This movie makes no sense it doesnt homage the first movie in a bad way or follow the stories. I would have rather see what they done with the rock for three than reboot it at least we got two good ones

That post was "edited" at least once and it still came out the way it did. Fascinating.

I notice some of our newcomers have posts like that. Strange.

13 is a bad age.

I have to agree with the criticism of Glover. Not because of any potential but in the way he did it. He CAN play a badass but here, he didn't. It was Murtaugh. I don't know why and it would've been nice to have seen something else. Sam Jackson? How about Morgan or Denzel? All interesting choices and they were still fairly early in their careers so it's not like they would've been expensive. I think the casting director went with whoever was *hot* and Danny had just come off of the LW franchise and got the ring.

More like "who is hot that hasn't turned us down already?".  That part was offered to every action star imaginable at the time.  They all said no and/or wanted too much money.  Supposedly Patrick Swayze almost signed the dotted line.  Anyway, after a long list of crossed out names, Danny Glover was the one to finally make the deal.

we all wanted to know what the hell kind of foreign food dish "strofiss" was. Im picturing a meal that looks like it has a spinal column in it, or something that looks like an exploded human on a plate. You arent lame, we were all right there with ya bud

PREDATOR getting the 3D Blu Ray treatment

Real interested on how this works out.

I know we came close to Swayze, Fox also pushed hard for Steven Seagal but Stephen Hopkins didn't want him because he didn't like Above the Law. As much as I enjoyed Glover in the role, if it had been Seagal it probably would've been bigger than it was.

Seagal in Predator 2:

Pros:

Success means more Predator movies!

Cons:

Success means more Seagal movies!

I honestly don't see any downside.

If they had allowed him to do Predator 2 in 1990, then he would not have gone off and done his own Rebound Rasta movie the same year. And then all of us no know no Screwface. There's your downside.

Predator 2 was great I will never understand the hate it a worthy sequel even without arnold the predator in a city it followed the comics so to me even with danny glover it doestnt hurt it just another chapter.Supporting cast bill paxton gary busey robert davi ruben blades maria conchita alonso cool weapons and fight between glover and the predator violent and bloody and it still good at a fast pace. I can understand if it sucked like the new one or after sequels after aliens but it ur opinion I'm alone in enjoying the movie I guess
post #75 of 89

yea I don't get the hate either. It's about as good as a sequel to predator could be. And nobody has mentioned the Bill Paxton death scene; that scene alone is worth the price of admission.

I don't actually know anyone who dislikes it. I just think it wasn't bigger back in the day because Arnold wasn't starring and it kind of passed people by.

You got me there, but maybe they would've implemented both Screwface and Keith David to Predator 2.

The soundtrack is almost interchangeable with that of Back to the Future.

Want some candy? You're absolutely right about the Bill Paxton death scene.

I've gone back and forth on P 2 from time to time, but I think I have settled on quite liking Glover being a more everyman cop rather than a super soldier.  There's probably a bit of a Die Hard influence in that change somewhere.

It's a bit of a weird watch even back when I first saw it, but that bit where he's hanging on the side of building and decides to climb and follow the thing always made me go "No!  What are you doing?  Leave! Go home!"  which means it works I think.

(I caught another  film with Danny Glover and that other cop called Dead Man Out in the middle of the night once.  Deadly serious death row drama, not unlike dead Man Walking only years before it.  Wasn't too bad either.  It was very weird seeing them like that though)

I quite like that chaotic LA future that was a bit of a thing in the 90s.  I never really understood why everyone assumed things were going to hell by the year 2000, almost right up to 1999.  But having seen some of the crime stats from like '92  I've got some idea now.  It was kind of insane.

That Predator in the sequel made the first guy look like a conservative old man.

even worst in the present remake

It's been years since I've seen PREDATOR 2 (so I reserve the right to revise this opinion) but I've always preferred it to the original. It has a wonky, 2000 A.D. vibe about it that I love. The first act of PREDATOR is deadly dull and forgettable, which keeps the movie from truly coming alive until the final act. I don't dislike the first film at all, but I've never understood the love it gets.

I was working at a video store when PREDATOR 2 first hit VHS. A customer came in looking for adventure movies and asked for my opinion. I lead him around the store and made recommendations (I remember TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE was one of them) and suggested PREDATOR 2. He'd already seen it and hated the film so much that he returned all my recommendations to the shelves.

Little known fact: Morton Downey Jr., who more-or less-plays himself in PREDATOR 2, is the nephew of actress Joan Bennett (Scarlet Street, Father of the Bride, Dark Shadows, Suspiria, etc.)

I would've loved to see Seagal snapping a Predator's arm.

Hopkins didn't like Above The Law ?! Surely that was a clue he was the wrong man for the job.

Yeah, Predator 2 - I think the first half is great 80's overkill, with mad gang lords, insane violence, copious cursing, and a general sense of escalation.

The second half is a wet fart, with Glover indestructible, the Predator going out like a bitch, Busey's death not being nearly violent enough, and a complete lack of memorable pay-off lines. It feels also like the budget was capped midway through and they had to end things in the most economical way possible.

Way better than Predators, though : )

Seagal in a Predator flick would have been weird considering that you'd need to have a hand to hand fight, and Seagal's style isn't one that you can have against an opponent as slow as a predator.  It would have been ridiculous.

Seagal vs. King Willy!

You're all insane.  PREDATOR 2 is one of the worst films ever made.

King Willy could be another of the Screwface clan - they were triplets!

Look, if Seagal was in Predator 2, he definitely would have beat the Predator in a fistfight. That's what you're asking for.
