Revisited the original last July 4th. It had been years since I'd seen it but damn if I still didn't get a kick out of it. I'd be on board with a sequel or two just to see how Emmerich tries to top himself after the magnificence that is "2012."

We'd better see that explosion-evading dog with a family now!

MORE BOOMER LOVE!

When I first heard the title Batman Forever, my first thought was "Is that a threat?"

ID4 is one of the few action spectacles that holds up over the years.  And like Tim, I was very taken by it.  I welcome any sequels with open arms.

If Devlin/Emmerich don't get David Arnold back and go for one of Zimmer's lackeys instead... I'm gonna kill them.

The only thing that would interest me is seeing the aftermath of such a traumatic world event.  How long would it take to rebuild a city the size of LA or NY after such an attack?

If you want any of the stars from the first film back...

... not very long.

ID4 may not be a great movie, but it is a fun one. That said, there doesn't need to be a sequel.

Emmerich really was on a roll for awhile.  Universal Soldier, Stargate, and Independence Day were all made in succession.  Post-ID4 his career has been rocky at best.

Unless you're talking about a creative peak (...) then I don't know what you mean. Emmerich can still easily write his own ticket.

Alas, 2012 was... I don't know how you'd ever want to make a movie after that. That fucking thing had EVERYTHING.

I do imagine you can easily get them all back. Will Smith had to go and get all super famous and fuck everyone up.

I do mean creatively.  I like The Patriot and 10,000 BC.............but can pretty much do without the rest of Emmerich's more recent output.

What the fuck? You'd take B.C over 2012? Even my Camilla Belle fetish can't forgive that trash.

Aside from the bird attack 10.000 had nothing going for it.

I'd love to see a ID4 sequel, but I can't imagine how that'd look like. Would it play during the aftermath, with the crashed ships that probably still house thouseands of alien warriors? In the wake of the fallen citys? In the future, where mankind has begun using alien technology? Will the same species avenge their comrades? Will another species try to conquer earth?

Wasn't that basically the original plan back in the day? The sequel(s) would find humans using adapted alien tech to rebuild and advance. Meanwhile, the aliens' buddies are coming for revenge.  That works for me. This type of movie certainly doesn't need a convoluted plot.

The movie's one of the best pure popcorn flicks of the 90s--people can harp about the inherent dumbness of plot points, but it's a 1950s B-movie writ with a grand, A-list scope so I always found it part of the charm. That, and the actors all sell the shit out of it, something woefully missing from high concept end of the world disaster flicks (John Cusack is so fucking bored out of his skull in 2012, it's apparent how ashamed he is.)

I'm wary of a sequel, but the premise lends itself to one--what we fought off in the first one was the tree clearers, now what are we going to do when the entire construction crew shows up?

Absolutely.  2012 was worth watching once for the sheer spectacle, but I'll never watch it again.  On the flipside, I still occasionally give BC a rewatch.

This is still my wife's favorite movie - she's a keeper.
