Vidocq

I just saw the review pop up on the site, so just wanted to chime in with my opinion of the flick...

I pretty much agree with the entire review. the imagery is stunning (I LOVE the lightning kills and the mask), the story is a bit shallow (am I the only one who saw the twist coming miles away?), but the flick is just uber-cool. very glad I spent a couple of bucks on the hong Kong import disc... of course, seriously pisssed off after finding out a couple of weeks later it got the 2 disc SE treatment over here as well... sigh.

Yeah, cool review. Definitely not something I would have known about with Tindalos giving a heads up, and as it sounds like something I'd like, I'd probably have missed a treat. Although, actually, I remember seeing the name of the film a few times and just assuming it was some artsy US indie movie. Only now do I learn it shows Depardieu getting twatted by one of the androids from The Black Hole...

I dunno...I thought it was the Cobra Commander giving Gerard a rump-tanning...

You're both wrong it was Klytus from Flash Gordon invading Depardieu's lower GI.

So is this on Region 1 or reasonable bootleg as of yet?

Great review, this movie's been on my list for my next DDDHouse/HiviZone order. Hearing Mark Frost's List of Seven called out in the description made my day, LOVE that book, such a great read.

And speaking of DVD titles I saw a lot of at Fango, I didn't pick up Volcano High at the con because I figured the aforementioned DVD retailers would have it but they don't! Pooh, eBay here I come...

loved Vidocq.

it's got so many cool ideas in it and such dazzling visuals that i could easily overlook the shortcomings.

which i could also say about Volcano High. that flick is just nutty. in a good way

DDDHouse will have Volcano High within a couple months, I assume. I think it just opened in theaters in Hong Kong, or will real soon.

I'm waiting for the cheaper HK import myself. The Korean 2-disc edition (available now) is more stacked, but I'm frankly just interested in the movie. Plus the extras aren't subtitled (from what I understand), so that's another thing to consider. Also, the HK version will most likely cost 1/3 as much as the Korean one.

I'd wait.

As for 2009 Lost Memories however, I'm all over the upcoming Korean Limited Edition (5000 copies). The 320-page Making-Of book that's included clinched the deal for me.

I saw the Vidocq trailer a long time ago and I've been wanting to see it for the longest time. Looks like that AND Brotherhood of the Wolf aren't ever going to get a Region 1 treatment... so I'm glad I finally bagged a region free player.

Also, glad to hear that Volcano High is a good time. I read the review over at www.hkflix.com and they panned it completely. The trailer made it look like it was impossible for that movie to suck.

I picked up 'Volcano High School' at Fango as well. It is my next review. Expect to see it in the next day or so. It is available at Poker if anyone wants to pick it up. Beleive it or not I actually got it for a couple bucks cheaper at the can... Odd.

I am happy that you enjoyed the 'Vidocq' review. I was fascinated at the visuals in that film. I'm going to have to try and pick up a copy of 'Belphegor: Phantom Of The Louvre'.

Who'd a thunk that the French would be turning out such wonderful flicks?

I violently hate Vidocq but it at least tried to achieve something. Belphegor, on the opposite, is a pure waste of time. Ridden with plot holes, poorly acted and badly directed. Don't even bother checking it out. You know, I wish you guys could get to see Nid de Guepes. It's not a horror film per se, but I feel that is really the best genre effort produced by our industry. It is heavily influenced by Assault but the director creates a tension and atmosphere quite unique in French cinema. Too bad its box-office failure will prevent it getting overseas, since I feel it is a far superior effort to all the rest of our genre films (Brotherhood of the Wolf included).
