Hope for Beyond Re-Animator???

That quote about the "Beyond Re-Animator" movie came from the "Fear dot Com" roundtable held at Warners two days ago as Combs, apparently, really is set to leave next week for this thing (he was kind of making a full announcement about it) and chatted with us about it.

The question is - should we have hope for this pic? Combs was optimistic, hoping that this one might go theatrical and talking about how it was always meant to be part of the Fantastic Factory five. Of those, only "Dagon" has been worth a shit - but it still couldn't go theatrical.

What do people think about "Beyond Re-Animator" now that it's really happening? There's been speculation about how it could be the coolest of pics, but I am extremely skeptical with Yuzna directing.

"Hope for Beyond Re-Animator"? You mean BOB Hope, right? Great to see the old guy getting some work. And they'll save a ton on zombie makeup... wink

In all honesty, I don't feel too good about it. Combs told me he wanted to be in on the creative process from the ground level, but they wouldn't have it. The script was writen and pre-production began without any input from the man that made Herbert West who he was, and that makes me uncomfortable.

On the other hand, I can't see him agreeing to do it if he feels it'll harm the franchise. He knows that West was his start in the buisness, and he has a lot of respect for the character form what I could tell, so I can't see him saying yes to it if the script is ass.

As far as Yuzna goes...don't know how I feel about that. I'm one of the few folks alive that dug the hell out of 'Faust', so perhaps I'm not qualified to comment, but I think he'll do fine.

As much as I ADORE Re-Animator (and Bride as well), I have to admit I'm kinda skeptical myself about this.

Combs being cinched in certainly helps since I don't feel it would be even remotely worthwhile to make the movie without him, but still...it's been so long since Bride, and I'm really curious as to where Herbert will go this time, the age thing isa curiosity since the Herbert character is the quintissential "young demented genius", Combs looks fab but he doesn't look twenty-something anymore... but that's just me being nitpicky about character, I dunno the story, and I'm totally open.

I would love a theatrical run even if only in "big cities" but I also don't think it'll happen. I think it'll do great with it's core audience but it's got a lot to live up to considering the track record of the previous movies. I hope to god there's no CGI at all and I would definitely rather see Stuart Gordon directing especially after coming off such a great film like Dagon.

I'm just concerned that whatever intangible elements aligned to make the first movie (and maybe the sequel) so damn cool will have long since deserted the scene. Making a sequel to a "cult" success this long after the fact usually results in trying to catch lightning in a bottle once too often, with grisly results.

Exhibit A: Escape From LA

I'm sure it'll be more fun than most movies, purely because of Combs (and, I must admit, I have a secret love of Yuzna since "Society") but whether it'll be a truly great film in it's own right, or one that we end up making allowances for, is something I'm nervously excited about.

But, hey, it's Reanimator. Optimism must rule.

Didn't Combs die at the end of every movie? I guess he'll die a third.

If Yuzna directs this has straight to video written all over it. They should get anyone else.

I love RA, was lukewarm on BoRA, and absolutely fucking hated Faust. However, I like the plot set-up for "Beyond..." as reported. Get a little fresh blood in there in the place of Dan Cain (who was a good straight man, granted, but didn't exactly have the acting chops), since this "kid" who grows up and finds West will basically be a younger, handsomer Dan, or at least it would seem so.

I am optimistic. After seeing Jeffrey Combs reprise his mad doc thang in Attic Expeditions, I can't but be excited.

But one thing I haven't heard yet...will Carl Hill return? eek!

Agreement there, Dan. One of the most gross, fun, fucked up movies I saw in the 80s (or was it early 90s?). The scene with the love interest lying on her side on the bed just creeped me out for days, b/c I didn't at first notice what was wrong about it...

Does anybody know if Society is available on DVD? Or has this already been covered?

I am soooo looking forward to this flick, I just wish they replace combs with someone else who has sympathetic eyes and can show the loss of a loved one...
JUST KIDDING JUST KIDDING!!! PUT DOWN THAT MEATHOOK!!i have been waiting a long time for this flick, I loved the first, bride does hold as strong a place in my heart, but hey, it was still fun as hell, and I like the idea of dan turning in Herbert cuz we all know that Dan was always a puss (I just hope he at least makes some osrt of appearance in the new one) But it is definately going to be grand just to see Jeffrey don the glasses again.
And whats wrong with Yuzna? I rather enjoyed some of his stuff, although I've heard bad things about Faust. Would you folks rahter see some hip young MTV video director on board? Or maybe even better john Russo (he did such wonders with NOTLD)
(note: that was sarcasm at it highest level)

Count me in the "optimistic camp". Back when I met him in August, Yuzna was very enthusiased about the project. He showed us a lot of production design and I've found all I've seen pretty cool (especially a little something that should please fans of the first a lot). I don't think that Combs would have agreed to come back if he didn't felt it would be a good movie. Plus, it seems that Paoli is once again the writer. So I have my hopes up.

By the way, contrary to what you may think, they try a lot to get their movies out in the theaters. Only problems is that most distributors simply aren't interested in all out horror movies anymore. They manage to get them theatrical in a few countries (Spain for example) but they have a rough time. So I don't think it has anything to do with the fact that Brian Yuzna is directing.

I have been waiting on this movie for years. I would like for it to be a good movie, but if it isn't I must own it anyway. Any Lovecraft movie is a good Lovecraft movie. Except Cthulhu Mansion. Damn that movie! Damn it all too hell! "From the imagination of H.P. Lovecraft." my ass!

Told ya, Johnny. wink

You did, yes, but after my interview with him a few months back, I wasn't too sure they were hot to have Combs back on board, with the way they were treating him. Of course, that was only one side of the story, so who knows.

He's back, it's getting made, I'm happy.
