Fox and New Regency are fast tracking a remake of Kim Jee-woon’s A Bittersweet Life and have tapped Allen Hughes to direct. The 2005 original followed the tale of a mob enforcer that not only shows mercy to a man he is tasked with killing, but also manages to fall in love with someone he shouldn’t. Actions always have consequences and bad things happen. I haven’t seen the film yet myself, but I’ve been told by many that it is just as fantastic as Kim’s The Good, The Bad, and The Weird and I Saw The Devil. Anthony Peckham (Invictus, The Book of Eli) is writing the latest draft of the script.
One half of The Hughes Brothers (Menace II Society, The Book of Eli) directorial team, Allen struck out on his own recently and is currently in post-production on Broken City. That particular Wahlberg/Crowe-starring thriller hits theaters this January. His brother Albert hasn’t had too much luck with his own solo debut, Motor City. The mostly dialogue-free revenge actioner finally managed to lock down a lead (Gerard Butler) and was set to shoot this fall until part of the financing fell through. Word is that it will regroup again in the near future, but likely with an entirely different cast.
