TCM: The Next Generation (your thoughts)

Thread Starter
or as i like to call the movie. the 1st tcm re-make. there showing this right now on hbo zone. as i write this.

i dont know whether to hate this movie, or love it. matthew mcconaughey does such a great performance in this movie. the way his eyes look and the caveman agression yells he does. while holding the shotgun. pure gold man pure gold. he steals the show in this movie.

it's not a movie i would own. but it's very much one i enjoy watching. just to see how rough it is. it's an interesting movie at the least. just for the sum of its different parts.

the thing is in the end. if you watch it more as a dark morbid comedy (ok so its not so comedic all the time. but hey maybe it's just me). then it's a good movie. but as a re-make of the 1st or a straight horror flick. it just pales in comparison.

but i do agree with joe bob briggs. this movie was the best horror flick of the 90's (in the us at least). now i dont know if that says anything good about kim henkel. or about the state of horror films in the 90's. you make your own decision and give me your thoughts. =)

peace out!

Oh gawd, pleeeease. I don't know what form of crack Joe Bob was smoking at the time that he said this, but 'The Next Generation' is hands-down the worst of the series. And yes, you're right...it is the first of the remakes. I mean, action for action, 'TNG' recreates the events of the first film then tosses in a bunch of nonsensical bullshit towards the end. What the fuck's up with the plane? Or the guy with the tatoos and scars, for that matter?

Bullshit. Absolute bullshit.

When I saw the film, in the theaters (Times Square, actually), a woman actually brought her 4-year old daughter. She later walked out...but what the fuck was that about?

Wasn't a fan of TCM:The Next Generation. As far as remakes go, it was awful. The whole body scarification, body piercing thing threw me. Leatherface just wasn't scary. I don't know, maybe I'm just jaded, but I was really dissapointed with the whole film. Matthew Mcconaughey's performance was good, but he couldn't save the film. Where's Gunnar Hansen when you need him?

FWIW, the Canadian DVD release (from Lions Gate, not Columbia as it is in the U.S.) is 93 minutes long instead of 88 minutes.

I actually saw this film theatrically when it was called RETURN OF THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE. The AMC theater down the road from me was one of 8 in the entire country to get the film in its theatrical release.

I can't figure out what's different between the two DVDs, though. The film is one big blur (not helped at all by the CIA/Alien weirdness of the last 20 minutes).

I want to know what was the lady smoking when she brought her young daughter into the theater. It's not like it was called Happy Happy Fun Time with Happy Scrappy the Super Pup, then turning out to be a hardcore porn. She knew what she was getting in to.

By the way, does anybody know where I can get a copy of TCM3 on dvd? I looked, but I can't find it anywhere.

This movie had no redeeming value. A remake, yes, but with no regard to tension and fear. Just unwatchable violence and screaming.

I've heard people voice similar complaints about the first TCM, but I think the original built suspense in a much more intelligent fashion.
I thought this movie was oodles better than Jason X.
I've seen this about 5 times now and I know that someday I'll watch it again, still trying to figure out the puzzle after all these years. Minor mentions on TCM fansites reveal nothing. It'd be interesting to actually find an interview with Henkel where he explains everything.
But at the moment its just a fun watch, to see mcconaughey give one of the greatest performances in a horror comedy ever.
I remember reading in Fango that once Jerry Maguire hit it big, Renee Zellwegger tried her best to keep this movie from ever reaching the light of day, as she was embarassed to be seen in a horror movie now that she's a respectable actress. In the same article mcconaughey was quoted as saying he was extremely proud to have been in a Texas Chainsaw Massacre flick, and is proud of the movie.
God bless 'im.

McConaughey rules. I've always liked him, and my respect for him as an actor grows with almost every performance. He carried REIGN OF FIRE and turned in a supporting performance in FRAILTY that I truly believe is Oscar-worthy (but won't at all be thought of).

Anyway, www.playcentric.com is currently having some kind of special sale. One of the titles is TCM: TNG. They have it for only $7.99 U.S.

What's more, I can confirm that at least a few people who have ordered this from them have received the Canadian DVD version from Lions Gate (which is the original uncut theatrical version seen by almost no one in North America). Can't beat that.

Of course, it is also Fullscreen.

By the way, I have figured out at least one scene that is in the uncut version that's not on any of the U.S. versions... the first scene involves the heroine (Zellwegger) being accosted and harassed by her Step-Father. But there is more than just this, because the version I have runs 93 minutes total. That's at least 5-9 minutes longer than all other U.S. video/DVD versions. So this (Lions Gate Candian DVD) is indeed the original theatrical version. (Except, of course, that it's called TCM: TNG instead of the original RETURN OF THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE).

I friggin' hate TCM: The Next Generation. Stupid as all get out.

I refuse to acknowledge this film as a Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie. The way Leatherface and The Family are portrayed is a complete mockery of the series and a slap in the face to the original film. It just goes to show that Kim Hinkle had no clue what was going on during the original film when he made this vile piece of garbage. I don't know what you heard but I heard Matthew had begged his agent to keep this film from getting a theatrical release. I don't know how Gunnar Hansen can sleep at night knowing the character he so masterfully crafted had turned into a drag queen wielding a chain saw, ugh! It's horrible, horrible, horrible! "Who will survive, what will be left of them and who the hell cares?"

I couldn't watch TNG. I like Zellwegger and can take McConnohayhayahay on a good day, but to me the movie confused "horror" with "people running around screaming at each other." Bad, bad movie.

Of course, opinions are like ass polyps...

Story I heard was that McConaughey and Zelwegger BOTH wanted this movie to disappear, seeing it as a blot on their resumes...
I don't know if Rene was embarassed by the flick b/c it was a horror movie, or because it was a horrible movie. Either way, I agree that it's nice to see "made" actors giving respect to their genre work.

Ok, you can kick my ass now.

I haven't seen this movie, should I waste 90 minutes of my life on this? Or should I work on a jello mold collection instead?
Jello mold. Definitely.
Yeah, go for the Jello my friend, this movie is a stinking pile. And McConaughey is great but he just reminded me of Viggo from TCM3. Renee was nothing special.

The whole concept was just retarded, and what a godawful poster (yeah I still have it though, but it was free!).

If you're a completist and must see it, just know you've been forewarned.

Not out yet. It's a New Line title, but Image put a superdeluxe Laserdisc with two audio commentaries back in the day, and with some of the cut scenes. Perhaps we'll see a Platinum edition when the 2nd remake comes out.

This movie scared me. I don't know what it was about. The ending didn't make sense; but, when it was over, I started adding up all of the time I wasted watching movies like TCM:TNG. After I got to a few monthes I got scared and ran in my closet for a cry session with my yogi bear doll.

Thanks. It was driving me nuts trying to find it. Guess I'll have to wait. Oh well...

This flick made TCM3 look like the Godfather. This movie was beyond dogsh*t mixed with cat furball. I dont understand how some people think TCM3 was worse than this. I think TCM3 is really underappreciated, and they should have released it on DVD with all the gore intact.
Finally, yes TCM3 is a very underrated film. It took scenes from the original like all of them do, but it was actually a great solid film. Ken Foree was cool as heck and Leatherface was actually played very well, and that chainsaw my god! "If you think the size of your chainsaw can compensate for other short comings, you might be a redneck serial killer."
Ken Foree has the kind of presence that can make garbage like Kenan & Kel just about watchable, but even he couldn't save TCM III.
Props to part 3... I liked it better than the Fourth for sure. But wasn't Leatherface ALWAYS a crossdresser? I was under the impression that at the very lesast in the first one he was. There is make up on one of the masks he wears. And Ed Gien pranced around in the dark wearing not only the clothes of women, but thier skin as well.

But I digress.

Does anyone remember the camp-ass television series She-Wolf of London? That's the same Chick from part 3.

Yeah, I remember it. Wish I didn't though. Hey, didn't she change in one episode because she got horny? Crap. Pure Crap.

McConaughey did rule in this movie. I love the part where he steps on that girl's head. And who the hell said this movie was better than "Jason X"? "Jason X" was 45728673425623476234 times better than this one.
