Chris Roberts' STAR CITIZEN - Page 3

I think Miyamoto never expected Kickstarter games like Star Citizen to become a reality when he said this...

Ive had a good experience with Kickstartes games Ive funded (Wasteland, Pillars of Eternity, etc) and the delayed ones (Bloodstained, System Shock) have been pretty forthcoming and honest with their goals and reasons for delays.

But seriously, Star Citizen is something else on how its kept this up for so long...

I don't understand anything about how this project came to be.  How the hell did they get this kind of funding?  How are these kinds of delays happening/acceptable/tolerated?  Is there any fucking plan in place for actually completing it?

The game will launch when Trump is entering his second term.

The problem, near as I can understand it, is not having proper estimates done AND not having completed requirements.  When you have churn where you're supposed to be developing and you're instead trying to re-finalize requirements and user stories, nothing get done and you burn money.

Way to kick a man in his spaceballs when he's down.

Ouch.

Hey, I love Jacob.  Not trying to kick him when he's down at all.  Indeed, I admire the way that he's handling this situation...I'd be ballistic right now.  I have a strict rule when it comes to ordering things: I get a due date and I get a refund if that date is missed, period.  I won't let a vendor hold onto my money longer than the agreed upon time.  I've had situations where I've ordered custom pieces of art or jewelry and gotten refunds or discounts because dates have been missed.  People are accountable for what they say they're going to deliver, and you have every right to hold their feet to the flame if they don't come through as promised.

So I'd be raising absolute holy hell right now and be demanding my money back.

Don't judge. We were all so much more innocent in 2012. If someone came in and told us Trump was going to be elected as President after Obama we'd laugh them out of town.

We aren't laughing now...

Speak for yourself.  I may feel differently about it in a few months, but thus far the over-the-top reactions have been pretty goddamned hysterical.

I remember how we joked here that in the inevitable movie about Trump's failed bid for the presidency, and we were suggesting end credits songs for it.

I suggested "I started a joke" by Faith No More.

And now I have to live with that everyday since November 9th.

This place has pretty much been the "Night of the Election" SNL skit for a few years now.  And it's evolving very nicely into the "Live in the Bubble" skit at the moment.

Even though I'm pretty sure this game will never be released. I still enjoy playing it.

Man, our grandkids are going to love this game when it's finally released.

(It does look pretty, though.)

There are a handful of single-player space missions, and I guess a lot of yahoos play the limited multiplayer PVP.

And didn't they just announce they were completely overhauling the game engine?

They're switching to Lumberyard, which is CryEngine with a bunch of integrated Amazon Web Services stuff. And probably decent dev support, which CryEngine never had.

The new update came out just before Christmas and the new Lumberyard engine runs quite well. It was a Huge download. I've been playing the Marines add-on and it's really not that bad. I wouldn't buy the game for it, but it's a pleasant distraction and shows the engine off quite well.

Also, Around the Verse has a studio update from our Austin office and Turbulent, and highlighted our incredible VFX team.

Meanwhile, the march to 3.0 has been ramping up across all our studios as more and more people blindly throw us money with each build. As you can see from our production schedule, we’re tackling successes and obstacles in equal measure, but we think it’s really shaping up. The constant encouragement and community engagement have been a big boost as my account in the Cayman Islands gets larger and larger.

Tickets for CitizenCon 2947 go on sale this weekend. A limited number of tickets for Concierge and Subscribers will go on sale on Saturday, 1st July. Tickets for all backers will be available on Sunday, 2nd July - the 2nd because our kickstarter backers are now 2nd class CitizenConned.

Load up on new Star Citizen gear before our latest looks are out of stock. Star Citizen hats, Squadron 42 shirts, Nox shaped buttplugs, and mouse pads featuring a panoramic LED displayview of the $153,283,723 we raised are just a few of our current items. Head here to see what else is available. Proudly wear them when you attend CitizenCon.

StonedLove received a Star Citizen coffee mug from his girlfriend for his birthday, and it looks great! Happy Belated Birthday, StonedLove! Don't you wish you had a girlfriend who'd buy stuff for you? Maybe some sweet VIP tickets to our upcoming CitizenCon? I kid, we all know StonedLove just bought that mug himself, after all he named his ship Lennay Kekua.

They've been in the news a bit this week after yet even more rumors of internal troubles, and reading about a bunch of stuff Roberts was into with his "film company" was really illuminating. He has surrounded himself with relatives on the payroll and a lot of other skeevy characters with criminal histories.

So the much-ballyhoo'd 3.0 ALPHA patch is delayed. Again.

http://www.shacknews.com/article/100783/star-citizens-planet-exploration-update-is-delayed-to-early-september

Again, this game is still in Alpha, and there are die-hard supporters out there hailing this patch as the proof that all this wait has been worth it, just you wait, you'll see.

A patch for a game still in an Alpha state...

Yeah, that's $50 I'll never get back, but live and learn. I'll download ALPHA 3.0 when it eventually drops, just to see if it's still as buggy and demanding and empty of content as the current build. Last time I installed the thing I couldn't even board my ship because it was literally fluttering nose-first in and out of the landing pad.

And all we ever wanted in the first place was a current-gen modern Wing Commander...

Jacob, did you ever play Wing Commander Saga? It was a free self-contained Wing Commander game based on an updated Freespace 2 engine. Came out in 2012.

I've been playing it for some time. It is an amateur project, but it still has a large campaign that lines up with Wing Commander III.

Hey guys, Robert's Space Industries released info at Gamescom today on a $400.00 luxury space liner you can now purchase for the thrill of looking at several .jpegs, plus a brand new Face Over Internet Protocol, which lets you use your webcam to map your facial expressions onto your in-game avatar! NEAT!

Who says they're not trying to finish the game and that they're constantly spending time and man-hours being sidetracked with tech no one asked for? Huh?

Derek Smart would be proud.

All that money will get the finished product out even quicker, Jacob! Instead of 4 years it will be 3 years instead!

The company is going to implode before SC ever gets released.

Yuuup.

Probably have said this before but SC is the clear cut example of what happens when a game studio doesn't give its' game any boundaries.

Optimistic viewpoint: If this game actually defies expectations and releases at some point, it's going to be bloody magnificent.

Oh yeah, it'll be damn near revolutionary....if it pulls it off.

Sure, while it's cool that people have been able to get their hands on it, there's just nothing that I've seen that suggests that Star Citizen won't be anything more than some nifty ideas.

The scripted demo they put together for Gamescom was buggy as hell, forcing them to re-start the scenario more than once, to the point where the live "players" would repeat the horrible dialogue they were role-playing to make it seem "immersive". There were so many crashes and glitches and clipping issues, at one point near the end of the demo a player-driven ground vehicle clipped right through the ramp it was trying to drive up, and it exploded.

And this was a self-contained LAN version of the game with only a few live players in one instanced setting, that they've had over a year to prepare for.

But, reading the YouTube comments, this thing is the Second Coming, and anyone pointing out the faults is a hater and just "jealous" (never mind if they also happen to be backers, they're still haters!).

I know I shouldn't be having so much schadenfreude with this game, but I have to at this point.

Okay, this is both sad and hilarious at the same time.

Because it's more important to add tech no one asked for and to charge people obscene amount of money for fake spaceships instead of, you know, polishing the game so that it's actually playable.

I'll eat my fucking words if turns out to be successful (because being just "good" is not good enough--it has to be revolutionary to make up for how long it's been delayed), but I'm with Singer: if this ever comes out, it's going to be a massive disappointment.

This is so weird.  The guy is obviously pouring money into the game, as it is playable and impressive for what's actually been released.  So if he's a con artist, he's playing the long con.  But people can have good intentions, though once you're staring at your bank balance with seven to nine zeros in it that you didn't really earn, I'm sure it's very easy to become hypnotized and drag things out so your balance can grow.  I'd be shocked if he isn't outright skimming and living high on the hog.... or at least paying himself a GIGANTIC salary.

I'd love to read an eventual tell-all book.

After asserting his refund request should be honoured he received another curt rejection. Finally, he sent letters to the Attorney General of Los Angeles, the Federal Trade Commission and the LA Department of Consumer and Business Affairs, telling them about the dispute. Within a week he received the first part of his refund of $900 from Amazon Payments. Soon after he got the rest of the money ($1650) through Paypal.
It’s worth reading the whole thing if you are a huge nerd for legalities and consumer rights. But basically at the heart of it all is the fact that Star Citizen recently changed its terms of service. Previously, these had said that backers would be entitled to a refund if Roberts Space Industries “has failed to deliver the relevant pledge items” after eighteen months had passed from the release date (see that archived here, under the heading ‘VII . Fundraising and Pledges’). Star Citizen’s initial release date was November 2014. This means that by now any backer who pledged under these original terms is entitled to a refund (people like Streetroller). But the developers still dispute this. Even as they finally accepted the request, they said that the backer was not legally entitled.

From what I understand of the legal tax disclosures, Roberts and his wife are drawing a $1.5 million yearly salary each from just one of the 5 studios they've opened with the $156 mil they've received so far. They could be receiving even more from the other studios. All legally, apparently.
