Lucio Fulci's The Beyond: ANY GOOD?.

Got The Beyond for my birthday yesterday. Haven't ever seen it. Is it any good. I would like to know before I watch it. Any feedback is appreciated.

I hate it.

Dude, listen to yourself.

"I have a Fulci movie in my possession that many people consider his finest film, and is regarded as a classic by the majority of people who have seen it. I want to watch it. I need to watch it. I'm going to watch it.

By the way, is it any good?"

WATCH THE MOVIE. MAKE UP YOUR OWN MIND.

I hate to come across as an ass, but seriously, what is the point of all these "Is this movie good, cause I heard it was" threads? You're a fucking horror fan. The last thing you need is advice on what to watch.

End rant.

Okay, just watched it. I wasn't impressed. It did nothing for me. I hope that this is not Fulci's finest film, because The Beyond could've been so much better. Don't get me wrong The Dickie scene was quite horrible, but the score just took the scare out of it for me. What was that, bad 70's porn music? Also, if it takes place in Louisiana why did no one have a southern accent? Overall it had it's moments, but not a movie that I would willingly watch again. Thanx to everybody for the input.

Fuci's best film is Zombie.

That was meant to read: Fulci's best film is Zombie.

I really liked the music....and almost everything else about "The Beyond" frown

Come on! Ya gotta love those pipe-cleaner spiders!

I bought Seven doors of Death also known as The Beyond, on diamond DVD. The quality was horrid and I never finished the film. I'm not a real big fan of Fulci; I didn't care for Zombie and couldn't get into The Beyond. I'd surely give both films another chance maybe on a better DVD for The Beyond. I would much rather watch a Dario Argentino flick then Fulci though; Italian horror is something you really have to sit down and appreciate, as many would say an acquired taste but to me it sometimes tastes sour.

Fulcis work grows on you. Watch it a few more times and you will start to understand.

the Beyond is my favorite Fulci movie.it's fucking fantastic.sure parts of it are cheesey or make no sense but,he's Lucio fucking Fulci!he does it in STYLE!

amazing movie.

There is a claustrophobic fatalism to Fulci's best work (IMHO City of the Living Dead, The Beyond, Zombie) that transcends its gore conventions. The excesses of his style can create an impressively bleak mood. Of course it took about three watchings of the Beyond to get into it, but there is a something there that is just wrong, and distinctly not American in nature (perhaps it's a more poetic fatalism than the slash and kill films following Halloween). The score to the Beyond is a bit jarring, but there are things in the film that tend to stick with you.

Fulci is cool. Zombie, The Beyond, and City of the Living Dead are decent for gut munching/eye gouging/ head exploding mayhem... but his best film is also his most restrained- Don't Torture a Duckling. Great giallo mystery, with a supremely disturbing ending.

New York Ripper isn't bad either, if you can forgive the lousy acting (something you'll have to do a LOT with Fulci films)
Zombie is a laugh, but I never really saw it as a hugely great flick. Great ending, though.
My two cents:

Being a fan of all things Fulci.

THE BEYOND IS NOT FULCI'S BEST MOVIE! It's not even his best horror movie. I'm not sure why people hold it in such high regard, actually.

If you were to ask me, the best Fulci movie is Massacre Time, a Spag-Western. A close runner up is easily Contraband. Unfortunately, zombies and pierced eyeballs got him noticed more than his genuinely good flicks.

So if you all want to know what I think his best horror movie is: City of the Living Dead followed EXTREMELY close by New York Ripper (perhaps one of the cruellest experiences in giallo).

Interesting results from my survey on favorite Fulci film... here
post #17 of 29
yikes. Two votes for Cat In The Brain. Those two people must have laughed their ass off at Dude Where's My Car if they thought Cat In The Brain was good.
I love The Beyond but I think I prefer Zombie and The Gates of Hell, then the Beyond. House by the Cemetery is great too, but I haven't seen nearly enough. New York Ripper is on my to buy/rent list and it's high time I saw it.

The first time I saw Fulci (first movie was Zombie of course) I knew I liked his style, but he's tough to warm up to nonetheless. I'd love to see his Westerns but on a rent first basis and I've never seen rentals of these anywhere before.

I hated Cat in the Brain, Ghosts of Sodom, and Don't Torture a Duckling.

Cat in the Brain was mindless, Ghosts of Sodom was pure shit, and Don't Torture a Duckling bored me unbelievably and I am a patient viewer, it just took its goddamned time and my friends and I predicted the outcome about 10 minutes into the film. I may re-watch it to give it a second chance, but the initial viewing was not pleasurable.

Duckling also bored me to tears.

Loved Zombie and House by the Cemetery.
Don't Torture a Duckling is an acquired taste.

But Cat in the Brain is undeniably crap. Never has so much gore been so boring.

I guess I fall in between here.I loved The Beyond, and I loved Zombie. However I couldn't finish The Gates of Hell,it was too based on gross-out shock value, and dissolved quickly into utter crap. The plot was flacid, as was the acting.Just my 2 cents....

That's exactly how I feel about The Beyond. I found that movie so frustrating that I had to refrain from yelling at the screen in anger. (I was in a theater with an audience. If I was at home I would have yelled quite a bit.)

Note: If you're someone who wants to post a thread like "Is this movie any good?" try doing a search instead. There's dozens of past threads on The Beyond and Fulci. It's more interesting to start a thread if you've got something new to say, rather than asking people to repeat what they've posted before.

(Steps off soapbox)

well,i can kind of understand asking about a movie on here if you plan on maybe renting or buying it,cuz if you come here enough you can start to feel like you know these people's tastes and how similar they are to your own.however,if you already HAVE the fucking movie, just watch the damn thing!

I saw THE BEYOND years ago on a crappy bootleg and was highly disappointed ... So when it came out on DVD in the tin, I bought it and gave it another chance, figuring it would be better ... ummmm .... I put it up on eBay immediately after watching the DVD ....

What is so strange is that so many of Fulci's fans "overlook" that fact that he relied on ripping off other films ... I think that ALOT of what is appealing about Fulci is the fact that for a long time, his films were very hard to find and obscure ... Had his films been widely known and successful, I guarantee you Fulci wouldn't have as many die hard supporters .... I mean, god forbid someone mentions BLAIR WITCH, everyone is like "blah blah, bullshit, it ripped-off LAST BROADCAST" ( another topic entirely ) ... But somehow the fact that Fulci's ZOMBIE was released as ZOMBIE 2 to capitalize on the success of DAWN OF THE DEAD ( aka ZOMBIE in Europe ), well, that is shrugged off as "Fulci being Fulci" ...

But I gotta give credit to those fans of Fulci who stand by him and attempt to justify / romantisize his shit films ...

My advice to you is to put your copy of THE BEYOND up on eBay and put the money from that towards LET SLEEPING CORPSES LIE ( which is the real deal as far as zombie films go ) ....

ps ... of all his cruddy little films, I do admit that ZOMBIE is sorta cool ... ok, there, I admit it, sue me

Thing about Fulci is he put a lot of horrific "money shots" in his films, which is the real reason that so many fans flock to him. Plus sometimes he ended up with a decent atmosphere, good effects crew and music score (though he never really worked with decent actors), all of which makes his stuff worthwhile. I'm hardly a rabid Fulci fan, but god knows I'd rather watch The Beyond, than some lifeless POS like Sleepaway Camp 2 or whatever.

Actually... If the Blair Witch tribe ripped anyone off, it was Cannibal Holocaust.

surprised to hear someone else hail Massacre Time. great spaghetti western. probably Franco Nero's best. full of cliches and a bit of clunky direction, but awesome gunfight climax

The Beyond is eye-popping fun, though
nah, man... Franco Nero's best is totally Django

Django is the man!

so cool, in fact, that Jango Fett was originally spelled Django in the scripts for Episode 2.
