Romeros Dead will rise...

Dead Reckoning news...

This was previously mentioned as being released by Anchor Bay Entertainment release, which traditionally handles mostly just video releases, but Romero announced at Fangoria's Weekend of Horrors last week that Fox has come aboard instead. The difference is that Anchor Bay was willing to give Romero a budget of $3-4 million, while Fox is willing to pony up the full $10 million he wants to make the movie his way (which is still pretty cheap in the grand scale of Hollywood budgets).

There is no production start date for this project, and it might not even be Romero's next. So, depending upon what he ends up on working next, this could start filming anytime, or many, many years from now. Romero has at least two other projects that are just as likely to be filmed next: The Assassination and Stephen King's The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon (preview pages for those will come if there's any sign they're going to be filmed soon). Filming would most likely be done in Pittsburgh, where the other three films were also produced. The budget will be $10 million.

The theatrical release will be cut by Fox to be an R, with Romero's full unrated director's cut eventually be released on DVD

I thought the Anchor Bay potential deal died well over a year ago.

Sweet Jesus... Fox? As in 20th Century Fox?

Hell, if good things come of this it could almost be enough to make me forgive them they're ludicrous abomination of a "fair and balanced news channel" featuring lots of "hard-hitting TV journalism".

They're, their, there... there are too many words in this language as it is.

I am TEN kinds of excited, this is the best news I've heard all freaking DAY.

Now, if this ends up going belly-up, I'm going to hunt down some studio heads, and set them on fire.

All of this info was from George's talk at Fango, if I'm not mistaken, and I remember him saying that he's not sure about 'Girl Who Loved...', but the script is being written. I can't see FOX plunking down that kind of money on a big-budget zombie film, but who knows. Maybe 'Resident Evil' did some good after all.

I'm a firm believer that out of every tragedy comes some good.

... Using friends, locals, etc., Romero made a classic in NOTLD ... By the end of the 70's, he had made some very good and creative films, including one of the greatest horror films ever in DOTD ...

Since then, he hasn't ... In fact. he hasn't done much of anything, so why should he be given all that money ( albeit not a lot by today's standards ) to make a "good" film ??? .... IMHO, Romero is a guy who needs to be harnessed by budget to allow his resourceful creative talent to show ...

When he made NOTLD, he was in his 20's, forced to be resourceful and minimalist ... He's now in his 60's, and I have serious doubts whether 10 million dollars will mean a better film than 4 million ... Maybe, just maybe, George no longer has the passion for making films: one ( arguable ) dud every 10 or so years supports that thought ....

I don't know, maybe I'm in the minority here, but I'd prefer Romero to have a minimum of money at his disposal, and be forced into making ( returning to ) a low-budget classic using some old farmhouses or whatever ... Simple .... Too much screwing around with money and time will only lessen the impact ...

Elmie: If you haven't heard about the plot of Dead Reckoning, a minimalist budget would not let it happen. As a matter of fact, I'm not even sure ten million will be enough for the movie as it's pretty grand in scope compared to George's other projects. The Dead Reckoning (a giant train like road vehicle) itself will be a very expensive piece and would probably costs more than the entire budget for Night of the Living Dead.

I have faith, and this is exciting news. The studio will demand an R rated cut for theatrical release but thankfully, with the advent of DVD George will be allowed to shoot the movie he wants to make, release the studio cut theatrically and then release his version on home media. Could it be that a major studio will finally allow George to make the movie he wants to make?

Gawd, I hope So...

Rapscallion, could you post a link to any available description of Romero's plans for the movie? Is the script itself available somewhere? Thanks.

I'm not sure if the script is available anywhere (his script for Resident Evil is, though, and it was awesome!) but I read script reviews for DR over at Ain't It Cool News.

try those for the skinny.

Thanks much. Haven't seen RE-- did Romero's script differ significantly from what made its way on the screen?
Not one of Romero's drafts was even remotely close to what was shot for Anderson's Resident Evil.

Romero's original script was much closer to the first RE game and was far superior. I don't really know what the circumstances were for his termination, but he had the better vision. His Japanese ads for Biohazard were reason enough to believe that he could make a great Resident Evil.

read the script if you have a chance. It appears in a couple of places but I can only find this one on a really obnoxious background.

Thanks for that. I'll take a look.

Being possibly the world's biggest Resident Evil nut, I was absolutely CRUSHED when Capcom announced that they had let go of Romero for the movie. Christ I hope he gets to make Dead 4. For anyone who hasn't seen the Japanese only RE commercials he directed, they're up here (shitty quality I'm afraid, but beggars can't be choosers):

They're nothing spectacular, but technically it was the first zombie work Romero had done since Day OTD. Here's some more pics/details:

The kid in the jumpsuit is Brad Renfro. I think he had some kind of clause thingy in his deal which meant that the commercials could never be shown outside of Japan.

This cracked me up... Nothing like plugging old work...

Christ, this is like... Night of the Living Dead!

*Sigh* What could have been....

It occured to me that some people here might not have seen Ryan's review of the Dead Reckoning script:
