From the dvd blurb on CC:
Not to be a classic horror nitpick--actually, yes, that's what I'm doing after all--but in the best DJ&MH movie for my money, the 1931 Paramount version starring Frederich March (for which he won the Best Actor Oscar--one of the few horror roles to do so) there was a surprising amount of sexual subtext, and even some NYPD Blue-style nudity (side-of-boobs, wahey!). It has to do with the Doctor helping out a saloon girl (read: hooker) and her attempts to "repay" him, which lead to Mr. Hyde being unleashed upon her.
Anyway, if you haven't seen this version, you should hunt it up right now. One of the best, with makeup effects that I think are still impressive.

| Despite what others may have you believe, it is just a modernized retelling of 'Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde', with Anthony Perkins continuing to try and be as psycho as possible. Lots of sexual issues plague our Dr.Jekyll this time around, which leads him to become a Jack the Ripper type character. |
