Holy cow, Versus was fun, fun, fun, for the whole family.

Let me start by saying that I had the most fun movie going experience I have ever had this weekend. On saturday a couple friends and myself went to the Egyptian and saw Versus. I can't recall seeing a more adrenalin pumped, just fun, fun film. Versus, I felt, was like Return of the Living Dead in that it had a great comedy/horror mixture with the added bonus of being filled with balls to the wall action. I can't recomend this movie enough.I know this film has been discussed here numerous times, but I just loved this movie so much I felt I needed to bring this up again.

Did any of you other L.A. locals attend this screening? I almost forgot to mention. It looks like the American Cinematech is going to bring back Dog Soldiers in about three weeks, so I'll actually get to see it this time around.

See Versus now.

Kick ass, glad you got to see it on the big screen, I'd love to myself. It really is cinematic greatness such that world hasn't seen in a long, long time.

Aye lass. Versus is gold.

I'll voice the (apparently) minority opinion that Versus is the most overrated "cult" film of the past couple of years.

For me it's proof that non-stop action isn't necessarily exciting or interesting without a single engaging performer or an original idea to carry it.

I actively disliked the entire cast and never felt involved or attached to any of them. And while I was riveted to The Blair Witch Project, somehow the equally woodland-bound locales in Versus gave me a bad case of tedium. And the action scenes themselves were badly staged (the repetitive low angles being especially snooze-inducing).

While it might score points for being bloody, there's so many movies past and present that can deliver splatter Fx as well as an interesting story, innovative camerawork or charismatic performances (everything from Dawn of the Dead and Re-Animator up to Dog Soldiers and Blade II) that I don't think that what Versus offers is all that special.

Cal, you have officially been listed on my People I Envy Most list. I wish 'Versus' had been playing while I was in CA. I would have left the convention and walked to the Egyptian Theatre.

For now I'll just have to settle for the copy I have...

Of course, girlcreeture coughed up some dough for the official DVD. So everyone throw some jealousy her way. wink

I absolutely love this movie. There was a lot of early hype happening when it was doing the film festivals and a lot of people were talking it up a lot. Some people went so far as to call it the Far Eastern Evil Dead... after hearing that I knew it was destined to fail when I got my hands on it.

Thankfully, I was proven wrong, I loved every minute of it.

Every now and then I need something that is entirely mindless to remind me that horror isn't taking itself too seriously these days and that it's perfectly fine for a movie to lack everything necessary to float a traditional style.

The story in this movie was just dressing, a reason to put a bunch of people in the forest with guns and swords.

Can't wait for the sequel.

Saw it twice on the big screen. Beat this.

Nuts. All I can find are bootleg DVDs, and I've been warned to stay far away from them. I think this is another movie Miramax has a legal death grip on until they can re-edit it for my puny american brain and fragile western sensibilities.

Media Blasters has the domestic rights now, to the best of my knowledge. not sure when they'll actually put the disc out though

Well, you're in a minority of at least two.

Didn't much like Versus myself. I know what kind of vibe it was going for (VERY fast paced, basically a live action manga), and clearly a lot of imagination went into it... But it just didn't work. It was too lightweight for me to get into.

You might want to add me to that list, 23 dollars off Ebay for a great GREAT Official disc. Oh what a lovely lovely film. *sniffle* I would love it more if I could speak Japanese... All hopes that the Alamo Draft House picks this film up.

I still can't get enough of all the scenes with that big ass gun. The best Action/comedy/zombie movie I have seen in...forever.

Love, love, love makes the world go 'round. Replace Love with Versus and you have my feelings.

I also bought the region all DVD of Versus ($23, ebay) after reading your post, WrappedinPlastic. Sorry to disappoint you, but it's in fact a bootleg of the official Region 2 Japanese release. I saw a few minutes of it on my 47" Panasonic projection TV, and the pic quality looked fairly impressive. Can't wait to watch the entire thing tonight (with a large tub of microwaved Orville Redinbacher popcorn) and bask in all its geek glory with the wife.

Well damn...fooled me. Still though, best damn bootleg I have ever seen. Clear and pristine. As crisp as it comes. One bootleg to not shy away from. The only bad thing is the subtitles take about a second to get there after they begin talking, but there is barely noticable after the first viewing.

French region 2 dvd is coming out this october, with english subtitles on the movie, in case anyone is interested.
I have (and love) the boot, what's on the French disc? I only ask because though I'm region free, the Japanese disc is $50.
Apparently, features are the same than on the japanese disc, except with french subtitles. I made a wrong assessment by saying there will be english subtitles, but it seems that an english audio track will be present.

Just saw this flick, and I got to say, I don't really see it. It was okay in parts, but it was way too long for a movie with no plot. This is the one time that I'd actually support Dimension cutting parts of the movie if they released it to theaters, because cutting about 20 minutes might make a pretty great movie.

Too much staring, too much wandering around, too much posing, too little of me caring. The interesting villains are around for 30 minutes, then they disappear. So they bring in more villains we don't care about. The cops were dumb and shouldn't be there.

But there were a few decent fights, although there wasn't as much actual hand to hand as I would have liked, and some interesting stuff. The big zombie scene was pretty great until they would stop and stare at each other.

I really kept trying to like it, but it kept dragging me down.

A few DECENT fights. Lots of playfighting filled out the rest.

Not too sound fanboy-ish, but does anyone know where the poster for this movie could be attained? I've been looking for it forever to no avail.

I think running a horror site already pigeonholed ya.

[Edited for my ignorance]

And sorry.. no I don't

My thoughts exactly. A few decent fights, but none of them lasted very long save for the ending, and even when they were coming along nicely, they would keep stopping them in the middle for long pauses and supposedly cool posing. So in the end, they didn't really stand out.

I've never seen a movie that was almost all filler material, but this one felt like that.

I still want to see it again though, because I wonder if I'd like it any better the second time. It's the kind of movie where that may be the case for me.

Don't know about the poster. It might be easier to find when the movie comes out here.
haven't seen it on sale...you talking about this poster-? <img src="http://www.sanchodoesasia.com/sdj/multimedia/versus_poster.jpg" alt="" />

I recently bought this dvd off ebay. Is it true that there's no region free release of this? I might've gotten the bootleg in that case...the quality's pretty great though- at least better than the murky vhs tape of it I had. I just wish someone would re-translate it, some of it's just strange(seems like they translated it a little too literally).
No, the poster I would want would be the DVD cover that's just white with the main character's back to it, sword in hand. Just too badass for words, if you ask me.

But hell, I'll take whatever I could find. I guess they just haven't made one, because I've looked pretty much everywhere.
I hear that. Good luck finding one, and if you do, PLEASE put a link up on the corner about it.

The more I watch that movie the more I love it. On the dvd I just wish there were subtitles for the behind the scenes documentary and that side story Nervous...

If you bought a region free version of Versus you got a bootleg. I hear the new bootleg with all of those extras looks great.
