Hideo Nakata scares da pants offa me!

I just watched Dark Water and had to pry my fingers loose from my desk.

It was THAT tense.

See this movie so that when Fango starts hyping it (ala Ringu) you can be cool and say you saw it before it was over-hyped.
where did you see this?

there's an eastern DVD that I plan on getting...

I haven't read the rules around here, but I'm pretty sure that leading you to a good source of bootlegs is a big no no.

so drop me a private message.
Absolutely not true, lead away.
We only really refrain from sourcing bootlegs when Lucasfilm are watching. Wait, we don't refrain from that either.

you guys sure?

even if it involves downloading?

pfft.. whatever. If I get banned, I get banned.

fire up your newsreader and head on over to alt.binaries.multimedia.horror - someone posted it over there either yesterday or saturday and it's just sitting there, ripe for the downloading.

Between that group and alt.binaries.multimedia.japanese there's a good deal of J-Horror happening on le interweb.

scariest leaky ceiling i've ever seen.
Interesting...so it's not that good, then, Dave, or are you really afraid of leaky ceilings?

Got my bootleg copy of RING today on DVD. (Region 1, Widescreen, and NTSC). Not too shabby.

don't listen to them, Johnny.

It's good.

Better than Ringu.

It's just as subtle, though and it DID take a little while to get rolling, but it's constantly building the plot. The atmosphere is heavy as hell too.

And that ceiling scared the pants off meh! And that pounding sound from the room above!

spooooooOOOOOOoooooky....
I wanna see it, and if'n you don't feel like downloading it, you can head over to HiVi Zone and get it from them.
I'm sorry, but i am probably ignorant to these so called News readers. I must know how to get J-horror! Where do i get these things? Please don't kill me till i have seen dark waters....

GirlCreeture, is HiVi Zone a reliable place? I am thinking of getting Uzumaki unseen for 5.50 but I am not sure about HiVi's reputation.
Nevermind! I just found it at DDDhouse for 8.50, thats including shipping! Hooray! ^_)^
post #20 of 40
Just so ya know, HiviZone is great, I've purchased from them a few times as has rogueboy with no probs
post #21 of 40
Oh may fucking Christ is Dr Jones correct. Dark Water screened at Frightfest and I can tell you it's a step up from Ring - more mature, more emotional and pancreas-implodingly pant-shitting !
Come on now ! It's riveting. Mature. Intellient.

You could very well say "nothing happens" in Ring. But we all know that ain't true. Things happen in "Dark Water", they just happen at a logical and excruciatingly suspenseful pace. And if you're not given an emotional suckerpunch by the climax - you better ask the Wizard for your heart Tin Man !

I vouch for them also, great company!

I usually use DDDhouse. anybody ever order anything from PokerIndustries? they have some good deals on films I can't order via DDDhouse...
Poker have a good selection and are pretty reliable, but their prices are MUCH higher than you'd pay at the overseas places. DVD Shelf or DDD House are cheaper.
They're a helluva lot more expensive than DDD house, but they do have some good stuff from time to time.

Loooks like we're going to have to put an order in...

OK, I've been waffling on buying "Dark Water," for the same reasons folks have said they didn't like it -- I was afraid, from the description, that it would be too slow and uneventful. However, any movie (hell, any THING) described as "pancreas-implodingly pants-shitting" is a thing I must own. As if I didn't have enough friggin' DVDs to buy today! Sheesh!

On further reflection, I have decided that I wouldn't buy any food or laxatives described as pancreas-implodingly pants-shitting. But anything else, hand it over!

I'd hate to hype you up so high, Penh, when someone calls it Pancreas Impoding and pant shitting or whatever... it's doomed.

Rest assured, it's a subtle, suspense piece. It IS slow moving, but so was Ring. It's Nakatasan's style. The pace is deliberate. The setup seems to take a long time, where all the pieces that are going to factor into the big pay-off in the end are slowly placed on the board.

The music in the movie (with the exception of the J-Pop songs in the credits) was awesome. I'd love to get my hands on the score. It's dissonant as hell and pulls the rope a little tighter in each scene that it's used.
Ring was compelling. Dark Water simply seeped. didn't love it, didn't hate it. but it's no Ring
post #30 of 40
Okay, put it this way. "Ring" was Daphne Du Maurier, "Dark Water" is Henry James...

...'that in more appropriate terms ?

Jones is right though, the Penderecki-esque score by Kenji Kawai is 50% of the reason the film succeeds.

My problem with the film was that I wanted a ghost story. What I got was an episode of "Divorce Court" that happened to have a ghost in the background.
Not wanting to be pedantic, but as someone who hasn't seen this yet, and would very much like to, should this come with a spoiler warning?
...because all of that happens as backstory within the first 10 minutes thereby setting up the subtextual narrative strand facilitating the charcter's gradual and demonstrable emotional transformation laying her open to becoming psychologically maliable and susceptible to whatever force or forces may be at the root of the supernatural drama.

Hence the need for the "divorce court" opening. Non ?

Damn...look at all those big words. Gotta love this kid...

Sorry, carry on.

No more Frighfest coverage for one young scamp then

Is the copy of DARK WATERS from DDDHouse a Region 0 DVD (meaning it will play on all North American players)???

I saw that it's listed as NTSC, but nothing on Region coding.
There's the VCD option if your DVD player or computer can view them. I just ordered Dark Water along with Pulse and Ring for a paltry $20 at dddhouse. I know the quality isn't as good as DVD, but it seems like a safer (and cheaper) bet than going with an ebay bootleg DVD.
I got one of the RING bootleg DVDs off of eBay. It's far from great, but definitely watchable and I've seen much worse bootlegs. Plus, it's even in anamorphic widescreen (though the image certainly didn't benefit from any additional resolution). It's certainly better than a late generation VHS copy.
Ring is the only R2 DVD I've bought in ages, and it's great quality.

It seems someone's majored in English! Poker does have high prices...damn and thats the only place to find a good deal on the Delicatessen DVD!!

From what yall are saying about the ghosts not being the point of the movie makes it sound kinda like Kairo. But I know nothing can be BETTER than Kairo, though.
