....fuckin movie. I'll be writing up the Frighfest coverage soon so I'll tell y'all about it then. Suffice it to say - there's virtually none of the depravity we've come to know and love from Miike -- but it's quite the most odd thing you've ever seen...

The Girlcreeture swears by it, says it's one of the coolest things she's seen. If nothing else that means it's worth checking out, the girl's seen a lot...

He's right, I fuckin' loved it!

this is in my latest DDDHouse shipment, and i pretty much grabbed it because i love Miike's other stuff and because the creech said it was great. curiosity: high.

Yep, Dead or Alive is absolute shite, overrated and overhyped piece of drivel, blech, what a let down.

I got a region free DVD player just to see Miike's movies... Katakuri's is one of the first on my list, along with Visitor Q.

As for DOA... I liked it. Quite a bit, actually. The opening blur of violence, sex and drugs is a great montage, but I thought the slow pace of the movie after that amazing intro is what killed it for a lot of people.

The ending, though. I wish every movie ended like that movie!

so far, City of Lost Souls is the only Miike movie i wasn't too wild about, mostly because i didn't particularly feel one way or another about it, a rarity for a Miike movie. i dug DOA but it's obviously not for everyone (creech). hell, i even loved Full Metal Yakuza, and i watched that without subtitles
post #11 of 27
Full Metal Gokudo! forgot about that one.

Dear Lord.. I've seen none of these.. Am I gunna have a hell of a time finding these? Cause damnit everytime I head out to buy a movie it turns into pure hell. Usually no one has them, and getting them online is a whole other story.

But I digress.

Where does the uninitiated start?

I loved Audition, and was faintly disturbed by Dead Or Alive, but loved the ending and begining. Pretty boring as well...

can't help you with stores, because unless there's an indie-owned specialty store in your area (or you're in a particularly hip part of town), you won't find most of this stuff in the local Tower or Borders or Wal-Mart or whatever you have. i buy everything online.

i refer you (and anyone else getting into Asian/foreign goodies) to THIS THREAD , because it covers so much, so well

I need to see City of Lost Souls so I can get over my love/hate relationship with Miike for Audition. My mom actually came in during the last 20 minutes and began repeatedly asking me "What IS this??" All I could say was...I didn't know. I really kept from learning what exactly the last 20 minutes was so it could be a suprise. Now I am even scared of watching Ichi...Dead or Alive sounds intersting though...damn you Miike for making cool sounding movies. Isn't Ichi the Killer supposed to be a superhero movie or something of that sort? I'm not sure...all I know is it fucked Moriarty of AICN's up.

I just want to make it clear, I liked Audition...just was disturbed by it. Well, the end at least.

City of Lost Souls is coming to a theater near me, so I looked it up on IMDB to read the reviews. Some people just find it misguided, some find it offensive. Love for Audition seems to be no guarantee that Lost Souls will please you.

COLS is too boring to be offensive.

It's Tokyo Fist Krak...but you were close. I have wanted to see Tetsuo the Iron Man for the LONGEST TIME. I had it on my Netflix queue but we canceled it before I got it! Grr...
Tetsuo's another lauded film that I couldn't get into.

When I was working video we got it as a screener (the manager never bought it incidentally) and I just got really bored about 30 minutes in, there's only so much in your face weirdness (sans straightforward coherence) I can take.
I found Tetsuo to be kind of obnoxious. Back in the day I had an unsubtitled copy of it along with some naughty tentacle anime on a video tape and would show it to people at parties... but when I finally found the domestic cut, it turned out that the subtitled version didn't make much more sense than the Japanese language version. There seemed to be a healthy underground film scene at he time Tetsuo was made with movies like Pinnochio 964, Death Powder, Crazy Thunder Road... and unfortunately, not many of them are any good. Pinnochio is good for a laugh, at least.

So that was my first experience with Shinya Tsukamoto. I DO like a few of his movies, though. I loved Bullet Ballet and Tokyo Fist. They're great.
Bullet Ballet is great. Probably the best of his stuff, if you ask me. I really only had one complaint with it and that is Tsukamoto's drawn out shots of people just sort standing around not doing anything. Maybe he considers it his signature style, but he does it a lot.

The story is pretty interesting and not too esoteric. I highly recommend it.

also just finished watching Happiness. One more reason why I love Miike. You'd never know for a second that the man who brought us Audition, Fudoh and Ichi could make such a hilarious and outright bizarre movie.

I loved it.

Damn you and your Happiness watching ways!

Sepia carnage set to the soothing pulse of Bach/Gounoud's "Ave Maria". Just one of many reasons why I adore Tsukamoto...
Just saw this this weekend. Great, weird, wonderful film. Loved the claymation at the beginning ("My uvula!"), and the dancing corpses. "I can never forgive the paparazzi!"
