The teaser for Del Toro's Kaiju VS. Mech movie is finally here!
THE PACIFIC RIM TRAILER IS HERE, AND IT’S HUGE!
God forbid we have opinions of our own. Fuck that, right?
If not everyone masturbates to footage of giant robots and monsters, something must be wrong. Chill. Its one trailer.
Don't worry man, I wasn't getting on you, just joking around.
That said, it's been too long since we've had a giant monster movie. A buddy of mine said he wasn't interested because he hated Transformers, but I wouldn't say this is the same. I don't know why, but the scale does something for me.
No I didn't. I was going to, but discussion on here (either in the kaiju thread or the Godzilla thread, I don't remember) dissuaded me. Is it good?
You rarely get huge Monster scenes (except during the ending), but i liked the acting and world building in this.
I liked Cloverfield, but that's about the minimum amount of giant monster I expect from a giant monster movie. But that director is apparently doing the next American version of Godzilla, so I suppose I should watch it for that alone.
Not really. The droning trailer sound already got commented on with people via Facebook. So for me, it was already played out.
I think it's best not to view MONSTERS as a giant monster movie in the same way this or GODZILLA or CLOVERFIELD is. Despite the presence of large creatures, it's an altogether different beast (har har). You may still dislike it but approaching it as a kaiju flick is just setting yourself up for disappointment.
Re: the use of the INCEPTION sound effect, I wish it wasn't the case but it's become standard for blockbuster sci-fi/fantasy/action trailers, so I don't really hold it against any film so much as marketing departments, which pretty much always suck for one reason or another. It's an effective trailer despite the cliche, plus this would be an appropriate use of the sound if it wasn't already played out.
Shogun Fuckin' Warriors: The Movie. Even with a trailer, I'm finding it hard to believe this actually got made, but eight-year-old me is giddy.
Personally, I'm hoping if we just shut up about this trend it'll recede.
I think that'll help significantly. 100% on board with the concept, director etc. etc., but the trailer definitely felt off, and I think the very measured pace of the creatures/robots had something to do with it. I don't think it's a type of action that's easy to cut into chunks a few seconds long.
The little girl at the beginning is wearing a Pan's Labyrinth type of coat. Love that.
How cool was it seeing the simultaneous human/Jaeger martial arts bow?
And I dig that the marketing people didn't feel a need to say "From The Director Of HELLBOY and HELLBOY II" or something like that. They just straight up credit the magnificent bastard right near the start of the trailer. Way to go, Guillermo!
That gif is the bees knees and this movie looks like it will be a mega ton of fun. I just can't find any space at all in my heart or soul to say no to giant monsters and giant robots... as presented by Guillermo Del Toro no less!!!
So I downloaded the super-duper HD version off Apple's site to watch on the big monitor and...yeah, damn. Trailer cut is still sort of odd, but holy shit does this feel BIG, even on my TV. Definitely going to shell out for IMAX, and I'd recommend that after reading, commenting on and thumb-upping the CHUD article you check out the high-res version because the small one doesn't do it justice.
Well... I can't fault it for delivering what was promised (giant monsters vs. robots, sweet!) but honestly? I didn't find the footage too inspiring or novel. I know it's not supposed to be anything revolutionary or different, but the trailer just felt kind of flat to me.
This could make for a CALL OF DUTY: DESTROY ALL MONSTERS type of game.
Plus the skeletal corpse on the barge? Or was one of the 2, post Jaeger fight?
It did feature the trailer beats that we've made fun of here before, but I have to say, I thought something after that trailer that I didn't think after any of the Transformers trailers: "I really want to see that."
Why? Couldn't tell ya, but I'd probably pin it on Stringer Bell giving the rally-the-troops speech.
