The teaser for Del Toro's Kaiju VS. Mech movie is finally here!

Yes!

"Today we cancel the Apocalypse!"

Stacker Pentacost is my new favorite character ever.  Just let me savor this moment.

Is that GLaDOS?

Christ, this place sometimes.

God forbid we have opinions of our own. Fuck that, right?

If not everyone masturbates to footage of giant robots and monsters, something must be wrong. Chill. Its one trailer.

Oh fer chrissakes.

Your opinions belong to ME!

Don't worry man, I wasn't getting on you, just joking around.

That said, it's been too long since we've had a giant monster movie.  A buddy of mine said he wasn't interested because he hated Transformers, but I wouldn't say this is the same.  I don't know why, but the scale does something for me.

So these are "Interdimensional" Kaijus, huh?

50 Bucks says that a Giant Robot heroically sacrifices itself by sealing that breach.

Edit- wydren, Did you catch Monsters last year?

I just love how damned SLOW-MOVING these guys are!

Gotta see this in IMAX.

You're fucking welcome.

No I didn't.  I was going to, but discussion on here (either in the kaiju thread or the Godzilla thread, I don't remember) dissuaded me.  Is it good?

It's worth a look.

It's on my Instant queue.  I'll check it out over the holidays.  From what I understand, it kind of plays cocktease with the giant monsters, which I'm glad Pacific Rim appears not to.

You rarely get huge Monster scenes (except during the ending), but i liked the acting and world building in this.

Fun trailer, but I am just sort of amused no one is mentioning the inception music cue effect. Del Torro gets a pass there I guess! biggrin.gif
post #26 of 252

I liked Cloverfield, but that's about the minimum amount of giant monster I expect from a giant monster movie.  But that director is apparently doing the next American version of Godzilla, so I suppose I should watch it for that alone.

Not really.  The droning trailer sound already got commented on with people via Facebook.  So for me, it was already played out.

I think it's best not to view MONSTERS as a giant monster movie in the same way this or GODZILLA or CLOVERFIELD is. Despite the presence of large creatures, it's an altogether different beast (har har). You may still dislike it but approaching it as a kaiju flick is just setting yourself up for disappointment.

Re: the use of the INCEPTION sound effect, I wish it wasn't the case but it's become standard for blockbuster sci-fi/fantasy/action trailers, so I don't really hold it against any film so much as marketing departments, which pretty much always suck for one reason or another. It's an effective trailer despite the cliche, plus this would be an appropriate use of the sound if it wasn't already played out.

Shogun Fuckin' Warriors: The Movie. Even with a trailer, I'm finding it hard to believe this actually got made, but eight-year-old me is giddy.

Personally, I'm hoping if we just shut up about this trend it'll recede.

I think that'll help significantly. 100% on board with the concept, director etc. etc., but the trailer definitely felt off, and I think the very measured pace of the creatures/robots had something to do with it. I don't think it's a type of action that's easy to cut into chunks a few seconds long.

Yeah I mean the slower movements are one of the things I'm excited about. Makes them feel truly massive. I guess it's a little harder for a movie trailer which tends to have a lot of quick cuts that demand quicker action, but screw that.

Rocket Punch people, COME ON!

But I agree that it's not a really well put together trailer, and including the inception noise hurts it.  The earlier viral Kaiju attack video was much better.

I'm in complete awe of this trailer.  Sorry.  Giant alien monsters vs. giant robots?  The kid in me is bouncing off the wall excited.

Just because CHUD's uploader makes Renn's wonderful gif glitch a bit...

BEST. TRAILER. OF. THE. WEEK.

Fuck Man of Steel (even though I liked that trailer). This is THE movie to see for Summer 2013.

Del Toro is back, bitches!

Assuming this is even mildly successful, whichever company got the rights to make toys for this film could make a small fortune.

The little girl at the beginning is wearing a Pan's Labyrinth type of coat.  Love that.

How cool was it seeing the simultaneous human/Jaeger martial arts bow?

And I dig that the marketing people didn't feel a need to say "From The Director Of HELLBOY and HELLBOY II" or something like that.  They just straight up credit the magnificent bastard right near the start of the trailer.  Way to go, Guillermo!

GODAMMED SEXUAL TYRANNASAURUS!

That gif is the bees knees and this movie looks like it will be a mega ton of fun. I just can't find any space at all in my heart or soul to say no to giant monsters and giant robots...  as presented by Guillermo Del Toro no less!!!

also...

while listening to the voiceover at the beginning of the trailer, for a second I thought "god damn, season 6 of Sons of Anarchy is going to be AWESOME!"

: )

Nice trailer. Wasn't blown away by it, but I hope the next trailer is showier in the giant robots vs. Kaiju action.

So I downloaded the super-duper HD version off Apple's site to watch on the big monitor and...yeah, damn. Trailer cut is still sort of odd, but holy shit does this feel BIG, even on my TV. Definitely going to shell out for IMAX, and I'd recommend that after reading, commenting on and thumb-upping the CHUD article you check out the high-res version because the small one doesn't do it justice.

MrBanannaGrabber, Rocket Punch...Indeed!  With...Shunsuke Kikuchi's classic tune...BOOMING in the background!

Well... I can't fault it for delivering what was promised (giant monsters vs. robots, sweet!) but honestly? I didn't find the footage too inspiring or novel. I know it's not supposed to be anything revolutionary or different, but the trailer just felt kind of flat to me.

Everything I had hoped for. And we just saw a teeny bit of the monster variety. I counted 2? Guiron looking dude and the one in the gif.

This could make for a CALL OF DUTY: DESTROY ALL MONSTERS type of game.

Plus the skeletal corpse on the barge?  Or was one of the 2, post Jaeger fight?

It did feature the trailer beats that we've made fun of here before, but I have to say, I thought something after that trailer that I didn't think after any of the Transformers trailers: "I really want to see that."

Why? Couldn't tell ya, but I'd probably pin it on Stringer Bell giving the rally-the-troops speech.
