Steam Holiday Sale 2013

Thread Starter

It's that time again!  Let's talk about what's on sale and encourage each other to buy games we never would have in the first place!

First up for Day 1:

Borderlands Franchise (Get the original if you're unsure. The second is better, but more of the same, and if you don't dig the first...)

Hitman Franchise (Blood Money is fantastic.  It's a puzzle game, where the puzzles are people and you solve them with MURDER)

Prince of Persia Franchise (I like '08, looks great.  Warrior Within is butt.  Forgotten Sands is very similar to Sands of Time, for good or ill)

Scribblenauts (20 is too much for me, but I like the iOS version)

Wargame (no clue)

Mirror's Edge (it's...look, it looks amazing.  It CAN be very fun, but they hamper the feeling and running way too much.  For $5, it's a worthy experience, thought)

And for current flash sales....don't buy Fable 3.  It's no good.  Boot up your 360 and buy Fable 2, instead.

The flash sale for the GOTY edition of Batman Arkham City for only $7.50 is awfully tempting.

Man, I'm such a sucker for deals like this, despite the fact that I have no money.

I haven't bought a new game in ages, so I'm thinking I'll catch up on old stuff by picking up Portal 2 at 50% off and Arkham Asylum at 75% off.

I might also have to pick up one of the Prince of Persia's, since they're only $2.50

To all those, both new and old, here are the rules of the Steam Sale: if it is something you want, and it is not a Daily or a Flash deal, DO NOT BUY until the last day.  If, however, your item IS a Daily or a Flash, it will probably no longer drop in price.

SomthingClever, that Portal 2 will probably be, at minnimum, 75% off at some point during the sale.  Just so you know.

Yeah, thanks for the tip. I noticed that as I kept looking, so I'm pulling the trigger on the other 2, but I'll hold off on that one.

I want that indi Super Mega Pack, but I already own 8 of the 30 games in it. If only Steam would allow the gifting of double copies bought in bundles, then I would be making a lot of random chewers happy.

By the way I would definitely say the Prince of Persia game on the flash sale right now is worth the $2.50 price. It was one of my first Xbox 360 games, and I had a great time with it even though the story steals so much from the Shadow of the Colossus that I was surprised there wasn't a lawsuit. The game controls well and is platforming bliss, just about everything can be climbed on, ran across and jumped from. Now that I come to think of it it is very much a mashup of Assassins creed and the older Prince fo Persia: the Sands of Time games in the way it feels.

If you are a bit confused by the generic title, it was an attemtp to reboot the franchise hense no subtitle or number.

The two things I'll be waiting for if they go on a huge sale is The Walking Dead and Arma ll. Hopefully they'll hold off until at least after Christmas.

Walking Dead will, most def.

Arma II...80% chance.

Secret World should hit $15, that my price point.  And then Skyrim DLC.

Everyone, buy FTL, Mark of the Ninja, Hotline Miami and Bulletstorm when they hit sales.  They're great.

Seconded.

Am tempted to pick up Secret World if/when it hits a daily (Considering they've just scrapped subscriptions, I'd imagine it'd be in EA's interest to strike while the iron's hot and get the game on at least a daily ASAP). Am also looking out for:

Sleeping Dogs (preferably in some kind of bundle with the DLC)
Dark Souls
Waking Mars
Miasmata
stealth Bastard

And I think that's my lot. I really can't myself indulging in a flurry of impulse buying like last christmas, partly because I still have stuff I bought then in my backlog. I reckon I'll have a budget of around $80-100, and reckon that should cover me for most if not all of these.

I voted for Miasmata for the community choice just for you.  Don't you feel special?

Oh yeah, I didn't even think about Skyrim DLC.

I know they had ARMA II for 15 bucks during the holiday sale about a month ago.  I'm hoping to get it even lower than that.

I'm hoping for a good deal on Dishonored and Walking Dead myself during this sale. Other than that I'll just have to see how each day's deals tempt me.

Thread Starter

There's your Dishonored sale!

Sim City 4 (yo, it's Sim City, dawg)

Darksiders franchise (Heavy metal Zelda meets God of War's combat.  The first is well worth it.  The second is good, but looses a lot of the charm)

Tom Clancy's Franchise (that's like...all of 'em.  Splinter Cell Chaos Theory is a classic. Conviction ain't bad. I like Vegas and Vegas 2, but they are shooterier than previous entries. Still my favorite cover system. GRAW and GRAW 2 are pretty dope, but Future Soldier is not that great.)

Dishonored  (really good game, one of my favs of the year.  Very Thief-y, very Deus Ex-y.)

Psychonauts (great, if frustrating.  The Double Fine bundle is on sale for the same percent, too.  Iron Brigade is badass, Costume Quest is cute and Stacking is delightful. Well worth it.)

Fear (the first has some fun-ass AI. The second is...OK, I guess.  The third is a blast in co-op. Get a buddy and you'll have a good time.)

Darksiders 2, Dishonored, and the Titan Quest expansion. Plus Humble Indie Bundle 7. More games that I won't have time to play!

Anyone here played Orcs Must Die? I'm a sucker for tower defense type games, and that looks like a fun take on it.

Thread Starter

Orcs Must Die is really cool.  It reminds me a lot of Tecmo's Deception series. Which was also cool.  The sequel is co-op, but shorter.  Get one and give it a shot, it's a fun game. If you dig, it'll be on sale again (probably) before the end of the Winter Sale.  And then probably again just as a random on Steam within the next month.

Both Orcs Must Die are great fun, as is FTL.  Will probably pick up Psychonauts, Torchlight2 and Dishonored and hoping XCOM gets a 50% off.

Also, want to get a couple of platformers so watching Super Meat Boy and They Bleed Pixels, the Shanks and Mark of the Ninja.

Problem is I've got tons of these games already through previous Steam sales, but admittedly it's not a bad problem to have. ;)

I went ahead with Dishonored. And yeah, here's hoping for an XCOM sale.

Legend of Grimrock is 75% off if you miss the old Wizardry/Bard's Tale dungeon crawlers. It's a pretty good one.

That RPG Maker VX Ace is tempting me. I've always wanted to fool around with the original RPG maker that came out for the Playstation.

But I just know it will be the greatest time sink in the world for me and I'll be putting hours of work into something that will probably never be played by anyone else.

They have XCOM at 33% off, so I picked that up.

Thread Starter

Jacob Singer, what a mensch!  Thanks for the game, man. You're a badass.

Blood Bowl (I really don't shit about it, but for 5 bucks, I will find out shit about it.)

All the Dawn of War (This is an INCREDIBLE deal.  Do it.  For the Blood God.)

DOTA 2 (MOBAs aren't my thing, but a Valve MOBA...might be worth checking out.)

Train Simulator (Hahahahaha! Just look at that list of DLC)

Dead Island (Fun, FPS RPG thing, kind of like Fallout 3 or New Vegas, but not as deep.  The DLC is bad, I hear)

Dungeon Defenders (multiplayer Tower Defense. It's nice, but really goddamn slow if you want to do single player.  If you've got friends to rope in, it's cool. If not, stick with Orcs Must Die.)

And current FLASH stuff: Condemned is pretty cool, thought not as cool as the second one. It's a first person bum fighter!  I bought it today, but Unmechanical looks neat.  XCOM is rad as hell, but I think you can get it for cheaper at Green Man Gaming or Gamefly. It's Steamworks.  It's worth it, though, whatever the price.

Not that this really helps you now, but Gamefly has it for $25 and you can use the code HOLIDAY20 to knock it down to $20. Activates on Steam, also.

Well, rats. I just got an email from Gamefly about pc titles, but I didn't go look. Them's the breaks.

Ooooooh.  This is a game that I really want that I'm worried I'll never sit down to play properly and I was able to resist the Steam price but that's pretty damned tempting.

It is a great game, and is totally worth full price. However, the last major firaxis/2k game (civ 5) was under $10 in a year. If you do not think you will be playing it rather soon, I would maybe suggest waiting a few months. If you want to play it sooner, though, $20 is a great price
post #28 of 79

Got my Portal sale today. Super excited about getting into Portal 2 finally. I'm also really tempted by the Dawn of War deal. I'm trying to keep my spending down and not bite on too many of these, but man that's a great deal.

Walking Dead for $12.50 pretty much has to be purchased, yeah?  I've heard nothing but good things about it.

I bit the bullet on that. I was hoping that sale would hold another day or two in case I got a Steam gift card for Christmas, but I've heard too many good things about it to let it pass up.

I couldn't pass up on Walking Dead either. I bought it this evening, and played for a couple hours afterwards. So far it's very very good, and I expect it to only get better as it goes from what I've heard about it.

I've been good about impulse buying so far, but have just snatched up the Sniper Elite Franchise pack on a whim, because a) I enjoyed the demo, and b) slo-mo x-ray Nazi nutshots. Oh, and c) slo-mo x-ray Hitler nutshots.

And massive kudos to Singer for gifting me Stealth Bastard. He's a fine fella and much deserving of our juicy rep.

You know what you should do with your impulse shopping problem...click the search button, then select the Games drop down option, then when the list shows up, click the Price header where it sorts games from lowest price to highest. Lose a couple of hours, plus rent/expenses, as you pile on micro purchases.

Or, wait for daily deals, but who needs fucking rules on a steam sale - rules are for sissies.

Damn, I'm gone for the day and apparently miss The Walking Dead's lowest price point. I'll just wait until the next time it's on sale.

No need to wait:

http://www.gamefly.com/Download-The-Walking-Dead/5003915/

It is 12.49 on gamefly and activates on steam. Use code HOLIDAY10 to knock off 10%. I believe this deal is going on through 12/24 so you still have some time.

Haha, that was me last year - and I still have the raging backlog to prove it!

Anyway, it's not like I'm some paragon of discipline here. Just grabbed Doom 3: BFG Edition off GMG - with the code and the $6 credit I got off buying Sleeping Dogs, it cost me $4.50. And I grabbed Dark Souls off Amazon for $15 last night. The other sites have really stepped up their game this year.

I just picked up Dawnguard, Morrowind, and Oblivion for $19.  Elder Scrolls is never going to release me.  (I've seen mods that make Morrowind look at least as good as Oblivion, if not better.  I'm aching to try them out.)

Yup - Morrowind Overhaul (Latest version here). It's a 1.6 gig download, but seeing as the game itself is less than a gig itself it's pretty reasonable on HD space. Just bought Morrowind myself - been meaning to check it out for years so looking forward to it.

The same people are currently working a mod to update morrowind (and eventually oblivion) into skyrim's engine. They already have the world rendered; they are now working on getting all quests, npcs, creatures, items, etc into the engine. They expect a beta release by spring for morrowind.

And a quick shout-out to Workyticket for the Steam gift! Merry Merry!

Spec Ops: The Line and Rayman Origins just went up as flash deals for $10.19 a piece. I've got Rayman on the 360, it is heavenly. I've heard nothing but GREAT things about Spec Ops, I may just grab it.

Spec Ops is great, and a steal for the price. As a shooter it's solid, but it's one of the most striking experiences I've ever had off a video game.

Amazon has a pack with spec ops and both bioshocks for $10 that all activate on steam. Saves you $.19 even if you already have/ do not want bioshock. Deal runs through 1/5.

Stop... making me... buy things...

I'm already 2 episodes through Walking Dead, I'm greatly enjoying it.  I don't see myself playing it again (at least for a few years) but I'm definitely getting my money's worth so far.

It's so much easier managing these steam sales when you're account has 879 games tied to the account. I just wished valve wasn't cockblocking my purchase attempts (using my us wallet credits) while visiting here in Canada, but yeah GMG has been a nice alternative in the interim.

Anyone have thoughts on the Max Payne series? I never played 1 and 2, and they're sitting there at $4 for the pair. Worth checking out?

They don't do native widescreen.  It's weird. I had to jump through hoops to get it to do 4:3 on my monitor.  As it stands, MP2 is still really good fun, if quite a bit dated.

They'll definitely be dated, and, at least in the first one, the "dream sequences" were incredibly annoying to me.  However, I had great fun playing them upon they're original release.  The first one, in particular.

I like how the 'Mass Effect Collection' is just the first two games...

Naughty, naughty.
