A bunch of comedians and an Academy-Award nominated person vs. the apocalypse

Because the Apatow crew wasn't over-exposed enough.

It is a great concept though. Just wasted by having these be the celebrities playing themselves. Imagine this starring the cast of The Avengers instead.

Sounds like it'd be pretty lame.

This is why you don't watch TV shows, right Jamie? Because seeing the same performers for more than 4.5 hours per year is "over-exposed".

THAT'S RIGHT JAMIE, I WENT THERE, AGAINST ALL MY BETTER INSTINCTS I WENT SNARK ON YOUR ARSE!!!

Sorry for going there.

Man alive I want to watch this.

I guess they changed its original title (THE END OF THE WORLD) to not confuse it with the upcoming Edgar Wright film THE WORLD'S END.

This.

These stars are over-exposed? I think that's part of the point and why this seems (from this footage so far) to be working. We're used to seeing these guys as other people, now we get to see them as "themselves." That bit with McBride laughing about Cera being dead? Hilarious.

I didn't laugh once. That is mildly disconcerting.
Finally a "Left Behind" I want to see! I'm assuming it's The Rapture? It would be pretty funny if Cera and Segal were actually "saved".
Saw a rough cut a few months back. Pretty funny, but definitely a lot of those standard Apatow scenes that go on and on.

You mean they haven't been acting as themselves? Could have fooled me.

Are we sure it wasn't an award show sketch? Because that was a Billy Crystal away from being an award show sketch.

"Where the fuck was that in Green Hornet?" made me laugh.

The brief brief appearance of future wife Emma Watson morally obligates me to see this flick...  Looks pretty funny.  McBride is the best thing here.

That's what I was trying to get at.

Why you'd want to see something like this starring the cast of YOUR HIGHNESS when Wright/Pegg/Frost have a similar movie coming out baffles me.

Because both groups are funny and we're allowed to see more than one movie?

I'd go see it.

I can't wait till I get to the point in my career when I can film me "riffing" with all of my best friends for two or three months, hire some special effects guy to add explosions, and get paid what anyone else would make in their entire lifetime for the privilege of doing so. If these guys had been steadily releasing better and better movies than maybe I'd let such laziness pass, but after YOUR HIGHNESS, GREEN HORNET and THE WATCH? No fucking way.

Hilarious is such a subjective word.  I might have gone with, "Mildly amusing, it's the same tired schtick and mugging these guys always do".  This trailer tries really hard to be clever, but I'm just not seeing it.

Might have been funnier if it wasn't 2 minutes of Danny McBride playing the same character that Danny McBride always plays.

. Yeah, you're not going to like the entire movie.

I got about halfway through it before I realized I could be doing something else.

It took me few seconds to realize, then actually process, that they were calling each other by their real last names.

Then I though "They can't be that lazy?"

Silly me.

How exactly is that lazy? Because they didn't take the time to come up with movie names for each other?

So you're saying if they'd all been calling each other by fake movie names those "jokes" would still have worked? The insider movie punchlines? Our familiarity with their work?

Haha.

I don't see why someone brought the new Wright/Pegg film into this. It's mildly similar in a really wide view of its plot. That's about it. Two totally different takes on apocalypses. That's like saying "Why would I watch this when Charlton Heston made THE GODDAMN OMEGA MAN?" There are many such films, including a lot of comedies. If you don't like these comedians and the idea of them playing themselves, it's very, very easy to not pay to see it.

And why do they keep calling Chris Penn "Jonah"?

Man, there are some super weak complaints in this thread. 3/10: wouldn't shake my head at again.

I didn't realize people hated the Apatow kids THIS badly all of the sudden.  The worm has turned dude.

I'll see this because of Rihanna. I am so sorry.

I kinda liked this idea better when it was in Zombieland and only involved Bill Murray playing himself.

Yeah, I'm not entirely understanding the vitriol this is getting either.

Not really? It's just I don't have a problem with a movie that's clearly using our familiarity with the actors as the basis of its comedy.

Probably because this kind of "Actors Playing Themselves!" shit smacks too closely to the wretchedly smug Bruce Willis/"Julia Roberts" cameos from Ocean's 12.

(Takes a huge breath) Because it smacks of narcissism to have it literally be about themselves, because it sheds a harsh light on every previous job when they were pretty much just playing themselves anyway, because This Is 40 was really bad, because its indicative of their entire thinking/film-making process that its too difficult for them to come up with anything more interesting than, "What would happen to US, LITERALLY, if the world was ending," to avoid having to write any actual characters outside of their fame-addled daily experience, because "Michael Cera's dead," isn't actually a joke, but it's clearly supposed to be one in this trailer, and that doesn't bode well for the rest of the movie, and because I'm just so very very tired of their "shtick."

But it'll probably be funny enough, so whatever.

Well, in that case, there were a whole bunch of really fantastic foreign and indie movies this year! Maybe you should post about them!

So weird when someone reveals their snob tendencies only when they want to shit on this sort of low-temperature stuff. And I use snob endearingly, so don't even, dude.

Um, I just really didn't think it was that funny.  Sorry that bothers you so much.  It must be really upsetting to hear that other people have different opinions.

It's because they're acting as themselves that makes it so funny, I think. A bunch of well off, pampered, probably vain actors trying not to lose their shit just seems funny to me, because one could imagine these guys being more willing to turn on each other than most people. Although it might have been funnier if they found some action stars to do the movie, if only so you could have scenes where guys realize movie fighting skills don't necessarily translate to real life.

It's not meta, it's post-meta!

But that's not really it. If a trailer doesn't connect--it doesn't connect. I think Gabe's usage of "snobbery" is correct. It's just kinda weird seeing it be employed for a comedy--particularly one featuring the Apatow crew.

Don't even what?

I'm kind of irked because I think most of these guys are better than this. I honestly like them, even Jonah Hill, who redeemed himself recently with Moneyball, 21 Jump Street, and presumably Django Unchained. But this is swerving dangerously close to the kind of lazy "pay me to hang around with my friends" shit that Adam Sandler craps out (another guy who keeps wasting his talent, BTW).

If these guys had made nothing but crap, I wouldn't bother commenting. I'm not being snobby, I'm frustrated with them. And hey, it could still potentially be good, I'm not writing it off entirely. But there definitely seems to be a sensibility forming around these guys that inspires laziness and hackiness. I'm glad they're having fun, but I want a good movie.

I brought up World's End because knowing a far more meticulous comedy team is working on a similar premise makes this seem rather pale in comparison. Maybe if that didn't exist I'd be more enamored with the premise. Maybe not. I don't know. But it's not helping.

This looks like it would make a better Funny-Or-Die sketch than feature length film...celebs playing themselves for 90 minutes?  Seriously Rogen?  What brand of weed contaminated your brain long enough for you to think this was a good idea?

It just seems weird to me that a bunch of comedians playing themselves is somehow automatically funny...what do people really actually KNOW about these actors that would make it funny?  Does anyone here hang out with Rogen or McBride?  And if they're playing themselves, does that mean they really sit around and crack bad jokes all the time and act like complete idiots?  It seems weirdly narcissistic.  It's not something I can see myself paying to watch.

Jokes about men blowing each other. The height of hilarity.

If this gets as dark and violent as Pineapple Express, I might tune in. But the mugging, the loudness, the laziness, the gay jokes... maybe I just got too old for this shit. Not interested.

I hope I'll be forgiven for giving the creative team behind SuperbadPineapple Express, and Goon the benefit of the doubt.
