Some APAULING casting for Amazing Spider-Man 2...

I hear that they're retooling the character's motivations a bit: he's taken it upon himself to teach Peter Parker how to be a REAL sad sack, dammit.

Spoiler: Rhino Dies At The End.

Say what you will about the movies but they do cast stellar actors.

I am now 100% on board with this film.

I hope he really is just a guy in a stupid rhino costume and not a mutant or anything. I wonder if they can make him the main villain, he seems more like henchman material.

This is such bizarre and un-expected casting that I love it. I just hope it's the original Rhino and not the boring Ultimate one

Original

Ultimate

No fucking way

By that, I mean that Rhino actually has fans?

When I clicked on the article I was sure the headline meant they'd cast Johnny Depp.

My guess is, that if this is true, we're going to get a CGI Rhino out of it. I can't see making Giamatti a hulking physical threat, but maybe I'm being uncreative.

I would love them to go practical for most of the shots.  There's no reason they couldn't.

He's the underdog villain. You're cheering him cause he's kind of a zero threat. More of a "good for you! A+ for effort" kind of thing.

It's why I hope they choose Egghead as the main villain in the next Batman reboot.

He had a fantastic "Flowers for Algernon"  style story in the "Tangled Web" series, and while Im no fan of post One More day Spider-man, Dan Slott did one hell of a job with the Rhino, who starts as a reformed villain who blames Spider-man for the greatest personal tragedy in his life, and Spidey is to blame in a way.

Plus, Giamatti in a rhino suit and a russian accent? ticket sold.

A shitfaced Giamatti crying his eyes out, drinking from the bottle, while collapsed on the floor of a shower, cursing Spider-man's name.  In the Rhino costume.  In 3D.  That would get my overpriced ticket money.

I never saw TASM.  Exactly how many characters and subplots is this sequel planning to juggle?

1940s actor Rondo Hatton, who was deformed by acromegaly and became the later inspiration for "Lothar" in The Rocketeer, had a perfect comic book villain face (unfortunately for him).

But most film fans agree that he probably wasn't any taller than 5'8".  They just picked good camera angles for him.  If they give Giamatti the right costume, the right make-up, and the right box to stand on, his acting will take care of the rest.  And then they can sweeten the size illusion with digital tricks for the action scenes.

So like the game it's going to be a genetic mutant, right?  Kind of like the Hulk?  There is literally zero chance it's a guy in a suit unless it's a robot.

Must be the lack of "zis" and "zat" in the comics, but I had no idea Rhino was supposed to be Russian. I'm pretty sure I've only ever heard him with the standard issue "Bronx-ish" villain accent in other media.

He talks at 2:18.  I trust Giamatti knows what he's doing... but oy vey...

Few years before my time. Mine was the 90's Spider-Man, and he sounded a lot more like this:

I suspect it's one of those things that just got forgotten as the character was rebooted for the umpteenth time.

Speaking of the best version of Spiderman ever, that cartoons Rhino was pretty good.

It will absolutely be the boring Ultimate one. He will play a well meaning but unhinged scientist that steals an experimental suit after he is fired from Oscorp. I will bet my good kidney on it.

Paul Giamatti is in final negotiations to suit up as Rhino in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.  Yep, you read that right.

Not often is that last sentence required. I still can't believe I just read that. Finally someone can make a fan-edit where the drunk assholes in Sideways have superpowers!

I had always figured he was like 6'4". You may well be right - lots of careful angles and forced perspective.
