"May" has been the most watched horror film of the year here at the Rotten household. Still a terrific flick. Love it.

Yes, Floyd it's at the River East downtown in the loop.

I sure hope McGee reads Ebert's review. Those are some kind, kind words from critic to starting filmmaker.

I finally got to see this today at a theater in NYC. I loved it. There was a small crowd of about 9, and they seemed to enjoy it just as much as me.

It sucks that a great movie is going unwatched. Hopefully it will gain a following when it hits DVD.

Hey, saw it here in Chicago last night at the 10:10 showing.

WOW....that movie SUCKED ASS!......and by "sucked ass" i mean...Its incredible! I was just jokin...this is one of the best movies i've seen all year and along with Battle Royale and Donnie Darko, one of the best i've seen in probably the last decade of film. Mcgee has created one of the most beautiful and twisted and lovable movie characters as MAY. IM IN LOVE WITH HER! My eye will now always be planted on Angela Bettis in future projects.

Lemme ask you horror fans somethin... i wanna see if this is just me but in regards to comparing us Horror fans' sentimentality to your average JOE....i turned to my girlfriend (who is not a big movie or horror buff) and said "Jeez, Jeremy Sisto's characters always turn into an ass"...i was talking about the fact ::spoilers::

that he dumps May and pretty much breaks her fragile heart...and mind.

::end spoilers::

but my girlfriend claimed "What do you mean he's an ass?...she's nuts!"....there's the difference...even with the fact that YES, MAY is definitely...off-kilter...i felt sorry for her the entire movie and took to hating anyone who made her upset... and would definitely take Sisto's place for a chance with MAY

Thanks for the details. I need to see this.

I don't know about sentimentality but it does seem to me that horror fans are more passionate about their genre than any other. Maybe I'm wrong but that's what I percieve.

That's why this movie is so good. You actually feel bad for May throughout the whole movie.

Unlike Willard where you understood why he was being yelled by his boss. The silly bastard was late for work. You come late you get in trouble. That's why a lot of people didn't enjoy that movie. You didnt care about Willard.

But poor May...She was just trying to be loved frown

I take it people like Ebert here?
A little OT, but speaking as a chicagoan, I do prefer Ebert's reviews to any other mainstream print film critic, but he has seem to have gone a little crazy in his reviews in the last few years (maybe since Siskel died.) And I don't think he reviews horror films very well at all.
But I do read him every Friday.
As far as horror film reviews, frankly over the last year the only ones I've really ever been able to trust have been on the Corner or here on the boards.

im MISSED it but on Ebert and Roeper last night, they reviewed MAY but i only caught the wrap-up at the end of the show...they said they had a huge split on MAY as Roger Ebert said he loved it and Roeper hated it...but then Ebert ended the show telling us viewers adamantly "GO SEE MAY. GO SEE IT!". very cool....Fuck Roeper.
He called it "the best horror debut since HALLOWEEN".

Just saw it tonight....and loved it. Even with my hugely high expectations. Thought it was great. So glad Lions Gate put it back out on the big screen.
Some DVD details have surfaced here, and I have to agree wholeheartedly with Ryan. Lions Gate has treated this film really badly for some unknown reason, and a virtually bare bones DVD presentation is just one more example of that.

bump

That's a pretty fucking cool endorsement not only for you dudes writing at the Corner, but for the overall awesomeness of Lucky Mckee's crew... to post something like that. Renews my faith in the beauty of grassroots horror.

Saw this flick a couple of months back at a friend's house. He knew somebody that worked at Lions Gate that got him a copy.

While this is certainly not my genre of choice, it was a cool flick. Bettis did an excellent job of being creepy.
Jesus, this is fucking unbelievable! I'm going to make it a point to go see this this weekend.
More info on the DVD release has appeared on the site...too bad about this, but hopefully someday we'll get to see it all...

Check it out

God I love this movie! I know I've said this 1,000 times before but I can't help myself.

I'd also like to add that Angela Bettis is wonderful, she looks so sweet and fragile and beautiful... she deserves all the praise she can get.

Me and May!!
I know I'm shameless, but May is my favorite movie of 2003 (thus far).

I attempted to rally the troops two months ago when I was lucky enough to watch a Lions Gate screener with The Hellboy. I started a thread to Lions Gate (which I forwarded to them) entitled "May: A plea to Lions Gate" and I'm afraid that my nagging and the requests of many others only resulted in this 11 city limited release. I know this because, at the time, we at the Corner were told by Lions Gate that they had done everything they were going to with theatrical at that point and that the DVD was due out in July. (At the time that photo was taken at the Saturn Awards last month, Angela said Lions Gate was going to give the film the limited release, though they might've just been saying that "to appease her.")

It's better than nothing, but the movie really deserves more than that. I for one, will be sure to hit that awful theater (I know exactly which one, it's where everyone has their damn press screenings, place must rent really cheap) this weekend to show my support.

Bump.

I find it very strange that 'May' is getting love from everyplace I go on the internet but Lions Gate is treating it rather badly. Did they get burned by 'Frailty'? That was another horror movie that Ebert and Roeper loved. It was promoted heavily and it died at the box office. Maybe they just think they'll make more money from the DVD sales. I just pre-ordered the DVD from Johnny's link but it's too bad a lot of us won't get to see it at the theater.

Jaye,

I'll have my eye out for you... wink

As a manager for Loews Cineplex...though here and Chicago and one of the very happy who saw May in the theatre, let me help in my own small little way.
The 1-800-555-TELL is just the number for Fandango, where you can order tickets on the phone, but it's not the theatre's number directly.
The number for the Loews Cineplex Beverly Center is 1-310-652-7760. You can't order tickets on it, but it will list times and have a number you could call to help with questions.

Vitus--
thanks for the info. Now we can cut through all the "If you know the name of the movie" crap. You're a good man.

Jaye--
won't be able to make the 5:20, so I'll say now what I was going to say then: great job with the score. You may not know this, but I'm the resident "score nerd" 'round these parts (you can find my reviews here under the Scary Sounds column) so I make it a habit of tearing scores apart on a regular basis. If I'd known just how great the movie was when I saw all of you guys at that panel at Fango in '02, I would've slobbered all over the lot of you endlessly. (Not literally, that would've been kind of gross...well, maybe a couple of you...)

Just saw this last night. Instantly one of my favourite films of the year.

Loved the way it was shot, loved the humour. I just loved it.
