My boss is sort of a cross between Walter White and Monstroso from Venture Bros. He's got the cockney voice running at low pitch.

GOTF confirmed.

It's just a skin you get after going around killing things Keith David tells you to kill. There's no ten minute fistfight or anything. And it is his WWF costume, not his They Live character. It's still cool though.

Wrong.

Damn, I just cant get into the spirit of these games, but i can certainly love their commitment to insanity, reference and fun; the fact that there's a "They Live" tribute might make me rent this one at some point, my utter lack of interest in the characters and the game's spirit be damned.

I should point that this is a matter of personal taste; Im extremely aware that this is a fantastic game and deserves the praise it gets.

Yeah, I've only played to the end of act 1, but I'm loving it.  This far in, I still think SR2 may be my favorite, but mostly because it came from nowhere after some severe disappointment, but I dig this entire series.  Curious to see where they take it after this though.

Where the hell has the time gone. Took my gaming session too far last night. Found about 700 clusters, hacked all the shops, did all the take over events. I regret nothing, that is until the wife wakes up wondering why I'm sleeping the day away. I don't know if I can go back to normal sandbox games with car driving. Just the efficiency of zipping around by land/air makes the notion of driving to shops tedious, at least compared to SR3. That kind of impatience was bolstered by Just Cause 2's superman mod...I really hope there's a late game option to fly around at least. Not completely done with the extra stuff, a bunch of Rift events opened up around the map.

So disappointed I can't fuck Keith David.  Everyone else is down but he shuts me out.  Kinzie is the best.

It's kind of awesome having done everything beforehand and just completely focusing on story missions all the way home. Even more awesome doing the sidequests pre-emptively, and just reaping the rewards instantly. One thing I wish the game had, that Sleeping Dogs did, was leaderboards for activities. And oh yeah, the god damned 'Murican Eagle flaps it's wings, love it.

It's going to be tough playing GTA5 and not being able to fly.  I don't even bother with cars in this game.

I drove a car for about ten seconds tonight before saying fuck this and jumping off into the night.

Given schedule and budgetary concerns, I probably won't be getting this till the Steam sale.

The upside: A Drunken Saints Row Christmas.

Probably the quickest I've torn through a sandbox game to date. Just a shit ton of great moments leading up to the end. The folk who made Dead Pool and Matt Hazzard should take note on how to do video game humor without being completely fucking grating. I was actually surprised at the attention to detail in some of the segments...spoiler alert:
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
The side scrolling beat em up rescue for Johnny Gat. My guy was wearing the same exact outfit in 16 bit graphics.

Curious what plans they have for dlc.
If the hint they dropped last week is true, we can expect 3 or 4 DLC mission packs, including 'The Saints Save Xmas' and...'GAT V'

Gotta say, the Saints are one of, if not *the* best set of characters in a game to date. Gonna miss hearing these lunat- sorry, 'puckish rogues' hanging out with each other having mad adventures.

Also, HOLY SHIT at the bit where Keith David tells Shaundi about the time he killed a man with his bare hands. The punch line was beautiful.

Dammit, you people are *this* close to making me break down and buy this game.

It's the Citizen Kane of Keith David voice acted games.

So, I may have missed it, but can anyone point me in the direction of the human rocket launcher? That Desperado guitar case skin would go great with this Homicidal Before Sunset Celine I just created.

....what?

Rinsed it. Absofuckinglutely wonderful. *That* bit leading up to Zinyak. You know, where *that* song starts. Just beautiful.

Wicked end credits as well.

What a crew.

I speak as someone who finds this series intermittently fun and annoying in equal measure. It's a delightful bunch pile of empty calories that you will have an absolute blast with. Personally I feel like I'm gorging on Krispy Kremes, playing this. I'm not anywhere close to the Game of the Year camp, but I would say I've enjoyed it a lot, and more than anything else I played all summer at least. If you don't get it full price, it's well worth grabbing down the line, although I believe SR3 took forever to go down much and even still is like 30 most places I've seen.

Wut? I did some googling and there are motherfucking hidden guns in this game? Wouldn't have known otherwise. Mainly just used the ones that came with story missions or challenges. I'm about 8 clusters away from getting the nuke upgrade to my dive bomb attack, reminds me a lot of Space Marine Fuck Yeah.

There's no beating fully upgraded SMGs, frankly. I'm like a third of the way through and I am an unkillable God. I'm very curious where they can go next with this series, because the way my powers are escalating I expect to be controlling the galaxy by the end of the game.

Yeah, dual wielding Robocop SMG pistols with electric ammo shreds pretty much everything, they're godlike.

What was everyone's preferred choice of arms? Lightsabre - Mal's pistols - Robocop SMGs - silenced shotgun - Eraser railgun - Noisy Cricket - Motherfucking Dubstep Gun aka Best Weapon In The Universe. Was a toss up between the railgun and the Pulse Rifle, mind.

As I understand it, the guitar case is a skin for the human RPG, but I never used it and its not in my original save file's crib weapons.

Also, the nuke attack is basically the end of the Matrix Revolutions Superbrawl at the push of a button. I spent 15 minutes spamming the hell out of it when I hit level 50.

Lightsaber, Dual Blade Runner guns, Alien SMGs, Semi-Auto Shotgun, Alien Rifle, Murderbot Minigun, Dubstep Gun.

I used the Abductor gun (trading off between that and the Murica gun), TF2 skinned rocket launcher with guided tracking, alien rifle, the blunderbuss shotgun, the dual smg's with electric bullets, the pistols with explosive bullets, and the laser sword. I liked the singularity gun but it would mess up my on field fighting tripping me up when I'd zip around going for instant melee kills. The shrink ray and inflating head gun were cute but not effective or efficient.

I've had it for 3 hours and all i've done is jump and run around. There is a whole game i hear, maybe I'll get to it when I find all those blue things. Not really feeling many of the radio stations though. Why on earth did they feel the need to have 2 dubstep/electro stations? I'm pretty much jumping between The Mix and the Dubwise station.

Oh hey, look who was chilling out at the Notting Hill Carnival yesterday:

I believe Mad Decent is their "other/comedy" station this game, similar to the Adult Swim radio station from the last one.

A coworker was playing this yesterday....all i can say is that i'll never be able to listen to Robert Palmer the same way ever again.

Thanks, Volition!

Spoilers regarding the DLC are out there following the patch screw up yesterday. I haven't looked at what they say but it's very encouraging that most who were wary about purchasing it following the lacklustre SR3 add ons were pretty much all signing up for season passes off the bat.

Personally, the only DLC I'm hungering for right now is the Dubstep Gun remixes pack - I wish to unleash the power of operatic and METAL wubs on my foes.

Jeebus. Yes. THAT song. *grin*. My missus came into the study to see what I was laughing maniacally about. Looking at the screen and hearing the music, she still didn't have a clue.

Philistine.

Just finished it myself. Technical quirks nonwithstanding (and I ran into a LOT of them), I can't see myself having more pure, unadulterated fun with a game this year at the least. The last three or four hours are AMAZING.

Ran through this earlier this week.

I honestly thought this was a step down from SR3. It's still a solid sand-box game and I absolutely agree that there are some sublime moments peppered throughout the game, but "The Third" gained a lot of traction of displaying the Saints sociopathic tendencies as the very reason for their celebrity, and I thought it lost a lot of that fun by forcing these characters into a rather generic Matrix rip-off story line that took itself a bit too seriously for my tastes. That, and there's a clear reverence for these characters that I'm not entirely sure this franchise has earned. I mean, I found myself only vaguely remembering events that happened in the first game.

But it's still fun, and running and jumping around is pretty great--especially when done to "I don't wanna miss a thing."

Saints Row: Gat Out Of Hell goes live for PC users in the US tomorrow. It's pre-loading from Steam on my PC right now.

This is a stand alone entry to the series, as opposed to DLC for Saints Row IV. You play as Johnny or Kinzie, assaulting the Underworld after the Boss is abducted by demons. The game promises a new city map to conquer, representing downtown Hell, and weapons based on the Seven Deadly Sins (including a sloth-themed mobile recliner with gatling guns in its arm rests).

Will it be as over-stylized as IV? I think they went too far on that last one. Looved the first three games, but four with its overly pinkish alien invasion theme. Interestingly, I didn't mind the overuse of colors during Blood Dragon.

And will it have the scale of the other games? Each of them you can play for 30 hours+

Volition is describing the game as a "stand alone expansion" to Saints Row IV. At 20 bucks, it probably has the lowest price of any installment of the series at launch.

The city in this installment, New Hades, has 6 districts and 81 neighborhoods, according to the wiki where I found the map pictured below. I don't know how long or short the main plot is, but there ought to be a ton of the "take over the city" gameplay that has defined the series.

Perhaps a better view of the aesthetics on the ground: this musical number! No, really.

Initial impressions of Gat Out Of Hell:

Billing this as an "expansion" rather than a complete game was the right call; the storytelling feels rushed here. To be fair, previous installments in the series inserted storytelling into quests as a way of padding the games. Still, the difference in pace is palpable. It would be very easy to complete the whole thing without scratching the surface of the activities in the game world. I'll be grognarding the activities anyways; this is the first whole new city map we've been given to explore since Saints Row The Third.

A number of the super powers from Saints Row IV return, with gliding replaced by true flight. At first I found the flight controls to be a little clunkier than gliding, but I got the hang quickly. You unlock flight immediately, and can start improving it by collecting clusters right away.

Kinzie's presence as a playable character is welcome, as I find Johnny far too two-dimensional to be interesting except as a parody. Fortunately, the ability to switch between the two playable characters opens up as soon as you've completed the flight tutorial and made your way to your safehouse.

While the default Boss appeared in trailers, the player-created Boss from my Saints Row IV saved games is the Boss in my playthrough. I don't know whether players with multiple saved bosses will be given the option to choose which one appears here.

That's good to hear. My Saint's Row character has pretty much been a constant (as much as they can be in a game this wacky) since the second one. Would have been annoyed if the plot had resolved around a generic.

Game doesn't unlock till tomorrow here. Reviews are pretty down on this so far, but even if it's an amusing open world timewaster, I'll probably enjoy it way more than a lot of same cost and higher rated indie games I did last year and was told I would enjoy by those same publications.

It's starting to look as if all the 7 Deadly Sins weapons are associated with the Ultor contact you meet at the beginning of the game. I'm not sure how I ended up with Greed's weapon, a gold plated SMG that shoots diamonds, but I have a quest from him in my log to earn Sloth's Armchair-O- Geddon, and I've stumbled across an unlisted mission to find all three "Taco Malo" restaurants and order from their drive through menus in order to earn what I assume will be the Gluttony weapon.

My favorite gun so far: the Exodus 10, a biomechanical number that shoots a swarm of locusts at the enemy.

ETA, with correction: the Wrath weapon is earned via...
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
...an achievement. Keep your Notoriety maxed out long enough for Satan's Top Agent to appear, then beat him down to earn the Ark of the Covenant.

Total play time : 8 hours, and it could have been shorter if I hadn't gone out of my way to hit the level cap, collect all the super powers and the clusters to max them out, collect weapons, boost them, max out passive bonuses, turn the whole map purple with minigame activities.

I feel like it was worth the purchase. That playthrough time reflects me not stopping to smell the roses, and even with the enormous amount of plot development that gets summarized in cutscenes, it's still obvious that far more production work went into this than in any Saints Row DLC that I've seen. I'll play the whole thing through again at least once, if only to enjoy flying some more.

There are five endings to choose from after the final boss fight, so save your game before heading into Satan's fortress.

Saints Row IV just got Steam Workshop support for player-created mods. New player-created outfits, weapons, and super powers are already being posted in the Workshop.

Quote:
There were many challenges in implementing Steam Workshop support since the game was not originally designed to support modding. A handful of dedicated Volition devs worked on this in their free time to update the engine and remove memory restrictions, as well as finding a way for individual mods to interact and work correctly with each other without the need for running special tools. It was all a labor of love for our fans, and we're incredibly excited to see the crazy content you come up with!

This month's Humble Bundle revolves around Volition games, including the Saints Row franchise and a pre-order of "Agents of Mayhem." Could be an opportunity to get caught up on the cheap, if you've missed out on the Saints Row series in the past.

I haven't seen a lot of chatter about Agents of Mayhem since it was first announced, but Pierce Washington and Oleg are playable characters in this, and Johnny Gat is scheduled to be available as DLC.

Waypoint thinkpiece in 3, 2, 1....

bonus points if they mention that Dead island booby torso.

Volition are a refreshing breath of fresh air in an industry that seems too terrified to just have fun these days for fear of some random scolding from TheVerge or something. Saints Row games were wildly inappropriate, but so much more tongue in cheek than their more grown up GTA sibling that it felt like they could simply get away with more. GTA has always gone for satire which can be very tricky and I was not convinced that GTAV (much as I adore it) got it quite right... Saints Row was always just slapstick.

Still waiting for Saints Row 2 to have some working servers somewhere....
