Rambo Image #1

I like to consider myself pretty “in the know” when it comes to game industry news, so it’s rare that a mud-covered title can sneak up on me and metaphorically slit my throat, but that’s just what happened with this reveal trailer for the upcoming Rambo game. In hindsight it really shouldn’t have been a shock; when you’re dealing with a property as big as Rambo you’ve definitely got to strike within five years of when that iron is hot. OK technically Rambo: The Video Game (nailed it guys) will only cover the events of the first three films, all of which were released before this video gamer was even born, but if Star Wars can be made hip for a new generation of gamers I don’t see why everyone’s favorite PTSD-riddled ‘Nam vet can’t as well. There still aren’t many details, but while the gameplay trailer below shows a pretty major deviation from the movie’s plot, I’d expect things to stay largely on the rails given the fact that, according to Joystiq, Rambo’s voicework will be composed solely of audio from the movie. Then again if reality TV has taught us anything, it’s that the key to great drama lies in out-of-context audio clips.

While it’s easy to be cynical about the cash-grab nature of a project like this, if we’re being totally honest First Blood Part II and Rambo III were essentially the cinematic equivalent of dumb video games anyway, and in the proper hands we might actually get a respectable Far Cry-esque action experience out of this. After all, developer Teyon does have a pretty solid track record with, uh…hang on, lemme just take a look at the Wikipedia page and…you know what, let’s just let the trailer speak for itself huh?

Right then. Hey, it can’t be worse than that Expendables 2 game right? Right?
