TV DRAMA KNOCKOUT - Page 13

The show ran for 14 seasons I think, and though it had its peaks and valleys, I'd put its BEST up against almost anything.

It seems that most of the participants have treated consistency as a major factor in what gets picked.  There's an argument to be made that the peaks are what should really count (particularly in regards to episodic shows from last century), but I side with the majority on this.  If my criteria is "which show would I rather be plunked down in front of a random episode of right now?" then I have to go something with a very high batting average.  Which are not in short supply on this list.

ya I get that.  Sure.

Luther did 14

The Prisoner 17.

Sherlock should peter out at 9 or 12.

I thought about mentioning The Black Donnellys as a very good show, but someone would counter with "it only did 16 episodes, how good could it have been?"

There IS injustice in anyone voting down a show because they didn't watch it.  Because when NYPDBlue was tearing up the waves, someone was watching GIJoe cartoons and in bed by 8:30.

We could load this panel up with 14 year old girls and watch GOSSIP GIRL win, by that rationale.

I think Schwartz could/should have done what the OSCARS do.  Mail us all complete box sets of 50 shows to ensure the voters were able to do their homework.  Just something to consider.

Damn good list, if I do say so myself.

So... looking at this list, Dexter probably doesn't even need to be on it.  And though the gods may strike me, Veronica Mars may be too high. I love it like a hot chick from high school, but like a hot chick from high school, it kind of lets itself go in college.  Band of Brothers by itself deserves top ten status. Chaining it to its lower functioning cousin dragged it down.

Honestly, I'd say we pretty much nailed it. I would've had FNL higher and Star Trek lower, but all in all, that's a really solid list.

Can't argue with most of that ranking.  My #1 would have been different, but not by much.

Interesting how low some of the zeitgeist "mythology" shows ranked (LOST, TWIN PEAKS, X-FILES).

I think the mythology becomes so unwieldy that it throws off the show's greatness. Does anyone remember the Xfiles mythology AFTER Mulder's sister comes back and Scully returns after being kidnapped and impregnated with alien sperm?  No. Cancer man may or may not have died and been Mulder's father, crazy shit happened, the anti-Mulder appeared and Mitch Pileggi just got hotter. I remember individual monster of the week episodes. The shows mythology ate the greatness of the show.

Good list, although Luther at #25 is ludicrous.

Yep. That ranking only demonstrates how many Chewers haven't actually seen it.

So we don't even do the top 3? Had I known that, I wouldn't have bothered halving the points again at 4.

All in all, pretty great. In hindsight, I could've knocked the last 7 off the list entirely, but I was trying to give an opportunity to shows that I don't love, but took to be popular with the kids these days.

I was actually saying that I thought it was ranked too high. Awkward.

Elba is great.  The show itself - not so great.

Agree to disagree.

Yeah. Normally, the top 3 become a never ending cycle, so to ease that, the top 3 get stuck where they are ranked. But I am glad you halved them at 4, otherwise, they would have been a couple of days narrowing down.

Indeed, I was going to fight for The Sopranos to the bitter end.

Personal peeves aside (I would've put Carnivale higher and don't think Star Trek deserves to be at #7), very solid list. Top 5 are perfect.

So doing a comedy knockout next?

I was going to do a Spielberg filmography knockout, but I think the focus has shifted to the Horror draft.

Comedy TV shows...I don't envy anyone who wants to compile that list.

I'd expect comedy to be even more contentious than drama, as it ages much worse.  It'll be nothing but people griping that other people won't recognize the objective superiority of what made them laugh growing up.

I think you'd almost have to do six separate knockouts for each decade (lumping 50s/60s together), then pool the top two or three from each into one final knockout.

And I may be crazy enough to try to put it together...

That is how knockouts used to operate, in fact. Tight groups of twelve or so, then a pooling of the top choices. But that's way back in the good ole days, the Brad Millette days, the Litmus Configuration days.

I really miss Millette.  Nobody was funnier.
