Played some Assassin's Creed and Lego Marvel (which nearly broke my brain that one of the companies behind it is WB Games.  Where the fuck is Lego DC?) and also played a little of Contrast.  Haven't put Killzone in yet.  So far so good, except for constant network issues.

Meanwhile, in Australia...

So far, I think its an excellent console.  BF4 is amazing and I haven't even cracked open AC4.  Just a really solid system.  Also, after a little while getting acclimated, I find the UI to be pretty good.  Yeah, there is some network issues.  But aside from those bumps, its been pretty damn smooth.

Resogun is very good as a free exclusive.

Good stuff so far, but I've only been playing too tired, too late so far, and after my second session tonight I'm pretty sure I've played it more on the Vita than on a tv. But hey, why not, right? The remote play actually works very well but I haven't quite gotten used to using the rear touchpad for running, grenades, the OWL and whatever else in Killzone. But I got better even after a short time. I even played an online match using the Vita. Awesome and fun.

Resogun is a lot of fun as we'll and I haven't tried Contrast yet. Tempted to download Blacklight Retribution and that other one on there (Warframe?) but will Killzone and Battlefield 4 it's almost like what's the point? We'll see... Though, I haven't tried Battlefield yet, or Assassin's Creed IV yet. I went with the 4s I guess... PS4, Killzone 4 ( even though they don't call it that), Battlefield 4, Assassin's Creed IV. Kinda funny...

All in all I'm very pleased so far and still feeling very confident in going with Sony before Microsoft this round...

Eager to play me some Pirates...

Uh there have been 2 Lego Batman games. The second of which is called Lego Batman 2: DC Superheroes.

Now if you are wondering why that game is not on the PS4, I have no answer...besides the fact it is a year and a half old game.
Yeah, in Lego Batman 2 you can play as Batman and Superman and some other characters show up at the end. In Lego Marvel I've been playing for a level and have already played as Iron Man, Hulk, Spider-Man, Captain America and Mr. Fantastic. So, I'd say there's a difference.

Oh I mean there is a difference, but considering the relative lack of mainstream popularity DC characters enjoy outside of Batman/Superman, it is not very surprising.

That being said, I think Lego Marvel is a far superior game with a much more extensive roster, and I would be interested in a similar game for DC. WB just does not seem as interested in leveraging their property in that way, though.
Those failure rates I've been reading here and there had me worried while I was flying back to Murica, Fuck Yeah this weekend. Coworker was kind enough to pick up my unit, and we put the system through it's paces yesterday. There's just a lot of stuff that impresses me with the hardware, os functionality, and social integration. Some bullet points:

The Goods

- So compact, like a new born baby, but this baby doesn't shit everywhere or pee in your face.

- Whisper quiet. Can't hear it compared to other electronics we have. Even when spooling up the Bluray it doesn't have that crazy rc helicopter sound.

- Vita Second Screen and Remote Play is great. Walking around the house with Resogun playing perfectly must be what those Shield owners have been enjoying for the past couple of months. Nary a sign of input lag or anything. Haven't used second screen on my tablets in games, but connecting to the console is easy enough.

- Controller is great and an improvement over the DualShock 3. Plugging my uber headphones into jack and getting great audio will be perfect for those times I hook the ps4 to my office monitor or when I can't have the speakers on loud - the same convenience functionality that the WiiU gamepad has.

- OS is simple and to the point, like the old XMB. I can get to where I want without having to deal with a clutter of tiles and useless shit I don't want to see, namely I can get to crucial os functions and change settings if I have to. No sign of ads anywhere so far.

- Value added store front. Resogun is a great game, in the same vein as Geometry Wars for Xbox and Nano Assault Neo for Wii U or Super Stardust on Vita/PS3. Contrast is looks great so far, will spend more time with it later. The fact Sony gave people who owned certain titles on PS3/Vita free upgrades builds a lot of goodwill - oh hey you own Flower and Soundshapes, here play them again! Then there's the freemium stuff out on day1 too - Warframe, DC Universe Online, and Blacklight.

- Complete control over your privacy settings about what you're willing to share.

- Share functionality and twitch streaming work. I've been joking with our EP's and QA leads that our jobs will get harder now that people can post game bugs and glitches online so quickly (ie, that Giant Bomb skin changing clip they uploaded) Which I think sloppy developers will get outted they way Jesus Bynum negatively impacted NBA Live's development. Me, if people upload their bugs with full clips of how they got it, makes repro'ing them easier and patching it sooner. No more days of vague "Oh I was doing this and then my screen froze or scripting broke". Clips and screenshots look great, and sell others on games you're playing. Twitch works too without any noticeable impact on game performance.

- The What's New tab keeps you up to date on what your friends are doing. Very easy to see games they've played, trophies earned, and see shared clips or pictures, and then later talk with them about how they like the games they've been playing.

The Annoyings

- PSN is getting hammered so online functions are still sporadic in nature.

- XMB should set aside a row or column for multimedia apps. If you haven't used Netflix/Amazon/Music in awhile that's some needless scrolling to get those opened. Instead games/apps are sorted on a 'last played' basis.

- Captures add up fast. It took me ages to figure out how to delete them off my hard drive. Go into Settings -> System Storage Management -> Captures. Then choose "All" or the "Game" you want cleared off your hard drive, in the next screen move your selector to the list side of the screen (that shows saved videos and screenshots), press the "Options" button (I had a brain fart at first and kept pressing the Share button out of habit) which will pull up a sidebar where you can select the Delete function. Choose which content you want gone and then delete them.

- In the middle of redeeming some of my day 1 codes/maps/dlc I would get kicked out of the Download now screen without having a chance to download the stuff I just redeemed. It was then I noticed, unlike PS3, it doesn't show a purchase history screen so you can redownload items you've acquired. Sat there wondering now how the hell am I going to get that COD map and AssCreed dlc's now? The current work around is to go to the Settings -> PSN -> Activate option, make sure your console is the Primary Activated Console of the Universe with Absolute Power. Then go to the Sony Playstation Website, on your pc or tablet, click the Shop Now button to go to the PSN Games Storefront, log in, then go to the Downloads List. That page will show you all redeemed and purchased games/apps/dlc, with a button press you can send those games to a queue to download automatically to your PS4.

- Upgrading that hard drive was a pain. In PS3 there was a little nook door you just popped open and slit the new hard drive in. On PS4 you have to carefully slide the glossy top cover off to expose the innards, and then you can go to town. Afterwards buff the crap out of the glossy cover so it doesn't look so smudged and grimy after being manhandled.

- Title updates abounds. If only there was an option to just restart the application after it has nabbed the new update, the way it does on 360. Of course maybe people don't want to apply the updates right away.

- Install as you go. On first run this is annoying to sit there waiting for the mostly giant massive games to install. And even after you install, there are mini-installs waiting to be done. Just do it once and get it over with, or let me choose to do a full install from an options menu.

- That packed in earbud/mic thing...Owwww! Kind of flimsy feeling cable too. I'll just leave that in the box.

- No prompt or message asking me if I want saves to backup to the cloud the way they do on ps3. The corrupted Battlefield save wouldn't be such a nuisance if that was working.

The Games

AssCreed Pirates - Looks good. Not particularly enthused about the series but hey maybe it'll grow on me.

Battlefield 4 - Conquest is so far broken. My campaign progress got wiped and had to start over via corrupted save. Crashing occurs in mp modes. Xbox One folk should take notice of the stillborn state of the PC/PS4 versions arrived in and get their multiplayer shooty fix elsewhere. What the hell happened Dice?

Doggy Duty - Runs great, mp isn't a crashfest.

Killzone Shadow Fall - Campaign hasn't wowed me exactly storywise, it looks great though. MP is fun to fuck around in with the changing objectives. Probably the best mp based experience for shooter fans at launch.

Knack - Not seeing why this earned such low scores. It's actually challenging as far as combat platformers go, nowhere near as exciting as my recent bouts with Sonic Lost World or Rayman Legends. Knack needs a better voice actor.

Lego Marvel - Wife upgraded my 360 copy. It works, it's fun, it looks good. No complaints here.

NBA 2K14 - Jesus Bynum this looks fucking amazing. Wife is completely owning me as we played some matches. I am terrible at BBall unless its NBA Jam. Makes me wish Visual Concepts would get back to doing NHL/NFL games at this calibre.

Need For Speed Rivals - Have this weird problem where when action gets intense the audio just cuts out. Looks great and it's fun racing around the highways busting racers in mp. Only knock is it feels just too similar to Criterions Hot Pursuit visually with some of the environments.

ResoGun - Great, love it. Free.

Contrast - Weird story stuff going on, but okay platforming in the vein of Lost in Shadow (Wii).

My final verdict: 943 penguins out of 1024 doritos.

Oh come on, you know this is useless info without telling us Nacho Cheese or Cooler Ranch!

(Seriously though, great write up.)
I've never tried Cool Ranch ever. Am I missing out? Here's one thing I noticed while back up in Canada. Up there BBQ chips actually is BBQ spicy assed chips, down here BBQ means sweet mesquite non spicy for babies chips. Babies! Get your shit together 'Murica.

And hey, welcome back mongy. Hope all is well. We missed you 'round these parts.

I finally turned on Battlefield 4 today. Looks great but didn't do much. Ran around the test area for a few minutes splashing boats and crashing helicopters. I picked up on the game having some issues online (as well as being the target of some sort of attack) and like mongycore, my campaign save corrupted but it didn't sting too bad since I really had only played for a few minutes. Still a bummer...

Hung out with my brother in law a bit and we played some Killzone. Enjoying it so far and for better or worse they at least seem to be trying to make each level a bit different from what came before.

I really want to get to Assassin's Creed soon but I think I may try to wrap up Killzone's campaign first. Each console eventfully becomes short attention span theater for me and having too many games to pick from is great but also makes it hard to keep focused and REALLY enjoy a game all the way. We'll see. I'll be a pirating soon enough....

You could go so far as say that BF4 is a completely broken game.  I think it's kinda unprecedented for a game this high-profile to be more or less completely bricked at launch.

Single player:  All save data is routinely erased.

Multiplayer: Game crashes often, Conquest doesn't wok, inviting friends into a game causes instant freezing (in other words, you can't play online with friends - I haven't got it to work once), system was shipped with $3 unintelligible mono headsets and there's no support for Sony Playstation brand USB headsets that retail between $80 and $150, except in wired, mono-mode over an obscure 4-port 3/4 stereo headset cable.  "Support coming soon" to these headsets, yet a google search shows no official statement as to what the hell constitutes "soon".

You could complain, but eventually they'll work out the problems, and it's not like BF has any competition because the maps are huge, and it's beautiful, and the vehicles, and what can you do but sit on your hands and wait - because if EA/DICE doesn't fix this stuff, which you know they will, they'll end up getting sued by consumer groups for false advertising / fraud, so they'll somehow scramble it together.  Hopefully this is just the Beta for SW Battlefront anyways, in which case Battlefront will be glorious

Two weeks... For patches!

(Remembers that the whole of fucking Europe is going to be hammering PSN on the 29th)

Probably the only perk of being a retail peon at my local gamestop is that I get first dibs on cool stuff that gets traded in. Someone decided it made sense to trade in their $400 PS4 today for $200 (and it did not fit the typical profile of stolen merchandise). Anyway, means that I will be picking one up tomorrow for $340 after tax and my discount. Planning to get NBA 2k14 and Killzone.

Whats the profile for stolen merchandise? Just curious because  wow, he really could have thrown it up on Ebay.

The girlfriend managed to hunt down one of these for me yesterday, and couldn't keep a lid on it till Christmas. So, I am officially next-gentrified. Downloaded Flower, Resogun, and Contrast. Bought Knack and AC: Black Flag, which i slipped in for a couple minutes before I went to bed. A copy of Battlefield fell in my lap a few days ago when doing a game trade, which i'll give a shot, if for no other reason than to let my HDTV weep at the 1080p beauty of the dawn, but I might still turn into Injustice before the week's out. I also got Need For Speed Rivals as a review copy on 360 that I'll be trading up for its big brother as well. Least now I'll have a basis of comparison.

Could use the ability to change up the background/new agey UI. Kinda thought the XMB was a little more on the elegant side in terms of how stuff is laid out, especially the video apps. And it's real easy to forget there's no Start button anymore, and Options is recessed enough where I keep missing it. Other than that, this is a sexy bitch of a system Sony's got here. Fast, quiet, no delays to do ANYTHING, more or less, after the day one patch is on. And much as I gave it shit when it was announced, the social media stuff is far better implemented than I ever imagined. Expect a first impressions kind of article by the weekend.

Stolen merchandise looks fresh out of the box; normal merchandise looks used. His system was still in fine condition, but it had definitely been used - it had fingerprints on the case and save data on the system. He also did not look like a meth head, so he did not fit the general description of those who sell stolen merchandise. I think he simply fit into the "more money than sense" category.

Anyway, just hooked mine up. I have to admit I am not a huge fan of the ui (and i hate that they kept that god awful interface for the ps store), but it is functional enough. Everything moves snappy and the system is quiet and compact though, so that is a plus. Still looking forward to my xbox one (it was already paid off prior to this purchase).

This is probably a bit too early, but those who got their Ps4s--could you see yourself going back to the Ps3?

If the 4 was backward compatible, I wouldn't look back. Not once.
I've still got the PS3. I've got way too much backlog to turn my back on it now and regardless of my personal backlog, the library of games is just too big with too many great choices, no matter where your interests lie, to flat out ignore. Good games are good games no matter the tech. That's why some of us can geek out when some 8-bit favorites show up as playable on some of our newer gear. Booya!

I'm going to be hooking up the PS3 back up this weekend and prob won't be using the PS4 again for weeks/months.  Fortunately I'm using a $10 upgraded PS3 copy that I can take back to the old system.

BF4 is what I want to play and it's pretty much completely broken - I can see from the PS4 dashboard that everyone from my clan is on PS3 playing BF4, while I haven't been able to play a single round with even one friend on PS4 because of network and software errors.  It's actually kinda depressing that the older system has such a better network and peripherals - BF actually isn't really fun unless you're playing with friends.

I'll try and buck up - things will prob be worked out with the network by Jan/Feb.

Infinite sadness Mr. Wendell, hope they patch up that game for you quick. I also have the PS3 still hooked up. I'm down to the last few bits of The Puppeteer, have a bit of Ni No Kuni to do, still haven't started Infamous 2, and am counting down until The Last of Us dlc drops. Edited to add: Also PS3 Diablo now that it's confirmed saves can be imported into the ROS Expansion hitting PS4.

PS4 store doesn't have a demo's heading; but if you go into certain individual games you'll see a download the free demo option. Queued up Fifa to try out tomorrow. NBA Live is just a bundle of lol, so last gen and a step back in almost every way compared to 2K Hoops.

Got my first black screen today when booting up the system. Unplugged it, booted it up, did the Safety Dance, and everything was back to normal. Hope this isn't a portent of something worse, dammit.

In terms of PS3 leftovers, I have still-unplayed copies of Heavenly Sword and Twisted Metal to blow through, there's still Christmas Saints Row 4 DLC coming, and my Wolf Among Us Season pass is in there. I'm good after that.

It'll be quite some time before I own one of these (will probably get a PS3 first, but yeah I'm done with MS and the WiiU hasn't sold me... yet), but I'm looking forward to playing the hell out of this system very soon. Several friends got them. Friends will much more money than me.

Booooo! All of the console stores should have this heading/sorting filter. It's like console makers don't realize what a big selling point this is. For good games, anyway.

Considering the industry as a whole secretly hates demos, it's not surprising they're not marching them out there in the spotlight.

I guess I'm one of the "less than 1%" who have a bricked console already. Thing wouldn't boot up half the time, now it won't boot up at all. Had fun with it while it was alive. Played a good bit of Lego Marvel with my kid, melted my face with Resogun, and was impressed with what little of Ass.Flag and Killzone I got to play.

This bit of hassle made me wonder if I'd cancelled the wrong preorder, but it's not like Microsoft has a sterling track record with console hardware either.

So, Sony's sending a coffin, and we'll see how long this whole process takes. I'm considering just throwing it back in Amazon's face, getting my money back, and buying another one when Infamous comes out next year.

Wouldn't it be easier/faster to return it to Amazon? They're fantastic about returns, no clue about Sony.

Amazon couldn't promise when they'd have more stock to replace it with. Sony 's handling this overnight both ways, so it shouldn't take more than a week. But they tried to get me to buy an extended warranty. That took some balls.

Has anyone noticed if there is any kind of private or anonymous mode? What I mean is that I can still be logged in to PSN, but I am "invisible" to friends.

Because sometimes I just want to play my game in peace but still gain trophies and stuff, doesn't anyone do that anymore?

That's crazy talk. Who really wants to have to keep up with 2 accounts. Sometimes I want to do multiplayer, sometimes I just want to not be bothered, and it's really troubling to me that they do not "allow" us to make that choice. Just like forced ads, and forced updates that take away functionality or the forced updates that were nothing more then you signing some right away. Yes, I was that guy that actually read the EULA for most of the updates.

I know to some it may be a small thing and i can just sign off/on, but my point is that we shouldn't have to and there is no reason that it shouldn't be seamless. I believe XBox has that functionality, correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm still really digging the remote play Vita capabilities here.  I actually started up Assassin's Creed IV yesterday, briefly on TV and then briefly on the Vita, and it works really well, and it's also nice to see that some games seem to know you're playing that way and make some control adjustments in an attempt to compensate or at least keep a smooth transition.  In the case of Assassin's Creed IV, one of the first things that popped up was an image of the Vita and with a button layout.  Pretty cool.

Also of note, I had never gotten Flower in the past.  Since buying it now would give it to me on the PS4, the PS3, and the Vita, I figured it's as good a time as any to get it.  Tried the Vita version today and now I don't know why I didn't get it sooner.  Looking forward to trying it on the PS4.  (ETA: One can dream of a cross play version of Journey, so for now, this is one guy who will).

I've also downloaded the other free games...  at least, Warframe and Blacklight Retribution.  Need to check them out and I'm on the fence about downloading the DC Universe game.  I barely played it on the PS3, but I am curious to check it out on PS4, though I'm afraid I may actually like it...  and I don't have enough time for games as it is!  Ha!

You can change your privacy settings so that it doesn't share any of your activities with anyone, and disable notifications. Friends may still be able to see you're online, but that's it. Barring that, you could still disable the connection.

So I guess some ass used twitch streaming in Playroom to sexually assault/exploit his significant other this weekend. If Sony does things the way Nintendo did, Playroom streaming may be disabled the way they did with that 3ds Swapnote. Not too sure on what kind of partnership Sony has with twitch but that's one thing twitch mods need to be on top of is making sure they protect the integrity of the streams, and also protect people from terrible asshats that also populate that chat space.

Sony as a whole need to better inform people, and families, of what they're getting into when they decide to share themselves with the wide world out there. Detail potential risks and how to better protect themselves from the awful fucking scumbags that one encounters. Even in cases where people weren't doing any lewd or adult orientated things, just regular families, the chat comments were generally fucking awful and suggestive that should result in people being placed on sex offender lists...or in cases of visible minorities trying things out received commentary that was just completely racist.

They should take some time to refine the Parental Controls, what they can or can't do online, if streaming/chat features are enabled, if camera features are enabled and who they can talk to (friends/friends of friends/everyone). The obtuse Level 1-11 shit isn't enough as is. With the popularity bump the camera accessory achieved when Ice-T kicked that robot into the screen on Kimmel this is something Sony needs to address so things don't explode into a bigger controversy giving bottom feeding newsheads more stuff to rail against when talking about us evil serial killer video gamers.

Leave it to people.  Someone, somewhere always does something stoopid...  I was actually looking forward to showing Playroom to my nephews on Thanksgiving.  I'm pretty sure assaulting/exploiting them is not in the cards though.  Robots will be interacted with, however!

I snuck in a little more time with Assasin's Creed IV over the weekend, and I'm really digging it so far.  I made sure to explore the opening area and get all the chests and other to-do items done, so I was able to leave after completing everything.  Lots of fun.  Cruised the ship out and now I'm wandering around the Abstergo offices.  Left off after getting to my workstation.  I'm one of the guys who really enjoyed Assassin's Creed III, so my opinion may not mean much to soem, but this one is solid as heck thus far...  and I've barely done anything!

Aah yes, that's what I've been waiting to hear. Just three short days and I'll be able to join in!

Sony Centre Melbourne have confirmed that I'll be definitely getting a console on Friday, so that's a relief. Less clear is when they'll actually be receiving the stock: they're hoping for Thursday afternoon (which means they can open their doors early Friday) but it could be Friday morning. I'm hoping I can get my hands on it first thing that morning, but I guess we'll see... And even better, thanks to the retailers here charging significantly less than I was expecting for the games it looks like I'll be able to pick up an extra game too (Probably NFS but maybe FIFA 14 - depends on how I feel at the time/What's in stock).

Now can we PLEASE get the next three days the fuck over with.

Nice!  I want to get back to playing with the PS4 a bit.  Dang, it's hard for me to find time!  Oh well.  Looking forward to a stable Battlefield Experience, and maybe I'll even try one of the big matches.  I just don't wasnt to be a liability and piss everyone off!  And I also want to take another look at Assassin's Creed IV.  I have no idea if I played it last with the 1080p patch or not.  Ha ha ha!

Always be spotting. Even if your gun skills aren't up to snuff you still help your team by alerting them where the bad guys are. Had a nice round last night on the island match. Found two places where I could just lay low as a Recon and spot almost everyone on the map. Crazy amounts of ribbons earned post match. And/or depending on what map you're playing choose one conquest point and defend it with your life (a little c4 around the flag doesn't hurt either).

So glad they finally got around to fixing the game. Don't know if that also applies to the sp campaign but conquest stuff god damned works now.

Thanks!  I'm pretty sure I'll stay away from the vehicles.  My time with them in the test range only served to show I need more time with them.  I'll be happy to do my best to help out my team!  I'm looking forward to giving it a whirl.  Sometime over the next few days hopefully.  I'll come back with any worthy anecdotes when the time comes.  I've never really played Battlefield multiplayer, aside from a couple of confused rounds on the PS3 with Battlefield 4.  This one feels like the real deal...  Fingers crossed!

There's nothing wrong with using vehicles outright, I made that mistake early on back in Battlefield 2. I'd leave the tanks, humvees, atv's thinking I'd be doing someone else a favor and just walk/sprint to the front. Use the vehicles you are proficient with and get to where the action is, capture control points, kill squads of folk running around. The only exception being the helicopters or jets, don't take those and immediately crash into the scenery if you don't know how to control them (as mentioned you can always practice in the test bed island). But it's absolutely great trying to defend a spot on the map and seeing a tank or armored humvee roll over the hill and get into the fight, and if you've played Halo you already have a grasp of driving things around, just remember you can switch seats by pressing the X button to alternate between any of the onboard weapons/turrets for the larger vehicles. Plus, depending if you get tagged as a squad leader there'll be times people will spawn in those extra passenger seats to complete your offensive capabilities on the open road.

Good stuff Justin, as usual!

I'm the guy who dug up the Vita thread, and mentioned Tearaway there as well, but I'll mention it in here again too.  The PS4 Vita integration is great and it actually works the way it's supposed to.  I can sit on the couch and play PS4 games on the Vita while the TV is in use.  It's a fantastic feature.  And like you, I'm a big fan of ther controller, ESPECIALLY that headphone input!  Boom!

24 hours to go... *twitch*

I'll be weighing in with some impressions after the weekend as well, though as Justin's done a fine job with the basics I'm looking to approach things from a few different angles. First up, I want to put Music unlimited and perhaps the video one through their paces and see how they stack up. I'll also be installing a 1TB hard drive right off the bat so I'll be writing up that process.

If there's anything else anyone wants to know about, let me know.

Really stupid question: why do you need the hard drive? More game saves? Or do you want to use it as an entertainment center and store other media on it?
