The Playstation 4 thread (PS4) - Page 10

If you're going to load up a bunch of games, do yourself a favor and upgrade the hard drive to 1 TB before you get too far.

At these prices might as well go 2TB. I actually put these in both my PS4 last year and things have been fine ever since on the storage front.

Until Dawn and Telltale's Game of Thrones S1 are the PS Plus July free games.

Oh, those are both excellent, but I own them.

I got a PS4 back in December myself. The PS4 slim with 500 GB hard drive and Uncharted 4. I've got quite a few games already and have bought some digital ones. I's pretty great, but since storage is being mentioned, maybe I should upgrade to a 1 or 2 TB hard drive just in case. My PS3 is still working fine (and is my main blu-ray and streaming device), but of the 160 GB it had when I got it in 2011, I'm down to 17.

When I got the PS4, Until Dawn and Batman: Arkham Knight were the first games I got along with it. Nice that it's turning up as a free digital purchase. I still haven't played it yet. Arkham Knight was pretty awesome. Probably the only game I've done everything besides the story mode to get 100% and get the rest of the ending. Those Riddler trophies took a week to get them all.

I'll see about a bigger HDD. My plan is to only use the PS for exclusives and whatever I get on PS Plus (Until Dawn is a must) and do the rest of my gaming on the PC.

Horizon's the tits though. So much fun.

A few months ago Sony implemented support for external USB hard drives on the PS4. You no longer need to buy and install a larger hard drive for more space.

However be aware, I've heard that not all extra drives are supported and I don't know how one goes about finding out which external hard drives are compatible.

Upgrade the internal, case the original and make it an external.

PS plus has been giving out some pretty great free games over the past few months, Last month was Until Dawn and this month is Just Cause 3. I hope the trend of releases continues now that the PS4 has been out for a few years and has a more extensive catalog of triple A games that are over a year old.

Yeah, I DL'd  JC3 and that standalone Assassin's Creed thing, looks a'ight. Free is good.

Console Just Cause 3 is sadness. I don't think they ever fixed it.

If you're in the market for free hotness do a search for Downwell - that's a vita crossplay freebie that also is good to go on PS4.
JC3 was such a letdown for me after a while. I love the second one still, but the third one just seemed way more repetitive.
Actually been thinking about selling my PS4. Just cancelled Plus today, since I haven't been using it much. The only thing keeping me from selling everything is the PSVR. But there may be more affordable VR for PC down the road.

Wow, graphics on Downwell are pretty pathetic, but it is free!

It would probably be ok on the Vita

I upgraded to a Pro. I don't have a 4K tv yet, but I figured the boost mode and a bit of extra storage would be worth the price until I do upgrade my tv.

In the meanwhile though I threw Assassin's Creed Unity and Evil Within in just to take a quick look and wow, I can't believe what a difference it's made with Unity. It's actually playable now! Evil Witthin's frame rate is a lot better too.

You could have added extra storage just by installing a new hard drive.

Sure, but the Pro also runs a lot of games better even at 1080p, and with higher graphical options. Almost all VR games, for instance, run better on a Pro, as well as titles like Elite Dangerous.

The Pro has more than twice the horsepower of the base.  Well worth the upgrade.

4 Trophies away from Platinuming Shadow of Mordor.

Last time I went to this much effort to complete a game was Bioshock.

Love slashing Orcs so much.

Impressive.

I put 5-7 hours into Shadow of Mordor and couldn't get into it.  I wanted more Arkham Asylum and less Ass-Creed/Arkham City.  Does the storyline become more engaging?

Copying the combat engine from Batman meant that every gameplay style other than "engage all enemies, kill methodically" was pointless as my muscle memory was well developed.

Kind of.  Depends on how into LotR Lore you are I suppose.  There was some cool stuff with Sauron.  The final "boss" fights were stunningly easy and a bit flat though TBH.

But dominating orcs and setting up riots and rivalries was great.  Exploding heads also great.  I'd dive into a huge group of them, brand about half, brand some of the monsters then retreat to a distance and just watch the carnage, then once my side had won I'd execute the lot by exploding heads in a less rainbow ichor fashion than Kingsman.

I kept getting owned by low-level captains in the beginning of Shadows of Mordor. Like, on the first map. I'd get one down to next to nothing, then another bastard would roam around the corner with his full entourage and wipe the floor with me.

I couldn't tell if I was doing something wrong, just getting unlucky, or if I just plain sucked. I'm fine (if not actually kinda good) with the Batman fighting style, so I don't know what it was.

If you could clear the Batman games on hard, the first 20-35% of Shadows of Mordor (which is where I quit) should result in you simply destroying every single enemy you come across regardless of setting, numbers, or if you have more than one captain.

Which sounds cool.  But actually made the game a monotonous slog and rendered all other gameplay methods unnecessary.

By design I think to setup some Nemesis.  When you start adding in the rune powers and extra abilities it becomes a matter of timing and you can wade through 100 orcs no bother.

My absolutely least favourite thing about the game is that you'll be in the middle of total carnage, and then a captain will show up, so the game stops to show you him giving you some abuse about how he's going to eat your liver or some shit.  Then it throws you back in, with your flow broken.  That can happen many times in a row.

2 trophies to go.

So I downloaded Shadow of Morder off of the PSN partly because of all the positive stuff people have said about it in this thread and I've encountered what may be a game breaking bug about 8 hours into the game.

I quoted this section of your post above because I think this very thing was the culprit. I was in the second mission of gollum's story arc and got to the point where I was ambushed by ghouls, then just as I'm finishing off the ghouls a captain shows up and gives me the new captain cutscene. When it gave me back control of the game all the ghouls were dead, but the message "clear all enemies for gollum to reemerge" was still on the screen. I thought it wanted me to kill the captain so I do, but he calls in his cronies and it takes me ages to clear the area, but gollum still doesn't show up and that damned message is still on my screen.

I eventually had to go online and used a guide to figure out that the message "clear all enemies" refers to the ghouls and that gollum will appear after the ghouls are dead, but since the game decided to make a Captain crash this mission, gollum seems forever bugged to never show up again.

I turned off my system in disgust, I'll see later tonight if restarting the game from my last autosave fixes the issue, but if it doesn't then I think I'm done with this game because I'll be damned if I want to spend another 8 hours getting back to where I was.

Might need to buy Wolfenstein The New Order.

For some reason I feel the need to graphically kill Nazis, and I can't wait till mid October when Wolfenstein 2 is released to do this

The last Wolfenstein and Doom games are so good.

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain is the big PS+ freebie for October, and is looking to be the first MGS I'll play since MGS2 way back in the day.

The convoluted plot and schizophrenic tone of these games made me lose interest in the series, but hey free is free.

FWIW, Phantom Pain improves on both those points exponentially. For my money it's the best MGS game since Snake Eater.

Can one start with 5 and have any idea what is happening?  Do I want to  even know the plotline?

Just loudly describe any two or three random weird dreams you've had over the last week or so, and you'll be up to speed on any MGS plotline.

More or less. Read the plot summaries for Snake Eater, Peace Walker and Ground Zeroes before you begin and you have a good idea about what's for what.

Okay, about to fire up MGSV and see what it's all about.

I'm wondering how much "playtime" I'll clock in before encountering anything resembing actual gameplay. I'm guessing at least 90 minutes.

A tall Giraffe lumbers in the distance leading a charge of elephants in your direction. Through the wind you can hear the hints of Folsom Prison coming from the sky. Eazy-E shows up and starts rapping against unseen Johnny Cash, and Archie Bunker wearing a tactical bikini mows down the wild animals with a gattling gun.

Fucking metal gear son. Ship it Konami, I just made you 50 million dollars.
