My innate need to find meaning in the course of events is just about screaming at me at this point that this whole thing must be some kind of elaborate Manchurian Candidate ploy to destroy the Republican Party from within. I know on an intellectual level that this is just political pareidola applied to random insanity (and besides, who would be stupid enough to build their master plan around relying on the actions of Donald fucking Trump?) but I just can't shake the feeling, because it seems like he really could not be doing a better job of it if he were trying to do so.

If this is what the General looks like, I'm going to take a bath in gin.

That said, it ain't over yet folks. Get the hell out and vote. And if your family is voting Trump, let the air out of their tires that day. For America.

It ain't over yet. Lots of time for shit to change.

Looks like someone has taken all his internet connected devices away from him.  His tweets have been startlingly vanilla for the last 24 hours.

...Jesus Christ, shut the fuck up, J.D. Hayworth.

(Watching Hardball right now. Some epic Alex Jones-level "rigged voting" conspiracy-bullshit.)

Damage control in full swing. Wonderful!

Talking about a rigged vote is actually probably the surest sign Trump's on an irreversible downward slide. He wouldn't be building in a reason to dispute or dismiss the results unless he thought there was a good reason he was going to lose.

The vote's been rigged for years, but in favor of Republicans. I don't see these limpdicks talking about voter ID laws.

^ Actually, Hayworth was spewing on and on trying to hypocritically defend the GOP's racist voter-ID laws in 2012 and other years just a few minutes ago. My bitchslap-hand was trembling so hard.

Indeed.  And before long the media will start reporting on Trump's resurgence in the polls as they realize that they still need a horse race to cover for another 3 months.  The system doesn't like it when one party is in complete shambles.  But Trump and the GOP could not have bungled their post-convention bump any worse if they had handed the reins to Michael Moore for 2 weeks.

My hope is that Trump's fall will drive more web traffic than his rise, so will just get week after week of news of his campaign circling the drain.

Obama calls Trump's claim of a rigged election "ridiculous":

You don't really need to rig it when your ideas are popular with a majority of voters.

The media's complicity in Trump winning the nomination would be hard to overstate.

"The election's rigged! RIGGED I tells ya!"

"Um sir, no one's voted yet."

I keep thinking about the baby thing, and it just gets funnier and funnier to me.  Kissing babies is the most basic, cliched thing that even the dumbest politicians are expected to get right.  There aren't enough William Hurt .gifs in the world.

I mean he talked shit on a baby.  Literally.  In front of cameras and microphones.  He talked shit.  On a baby.

It wasn't even an opposing baby.  The baby was at his rally.

You can almost see the fumes come out of Karl Rove's ears.  Say what you want about the dude, but he seems to know how to manage a campaign.

"Let's take last Friday," Rove started. "Rather than engaging in a battle with the Khan family over the death of their son. What if that day Donald Trump had taken the economic report that showed 1% GDP growth and excoriated her for having nothing but the same policies as Barack Obama that put us here ....

He's going out saying they should have not scheduled the debates 18 months ago to coincide with NFL games and the fire marshals are against me because they are enforcing the fire codes on how many people can jam into my rally spaces. What does that do to advance the cause? What great issue facing America is that involved with?"

He's got way, way bigger electoral-fish to fry than Maine.

Maine and Nebraska portion out their electoral votes.  There was a poll a while back that showed Trump could actually win one of Maine's four electoral votes, so they wanted to go up there.  That poll was a while ago, though, so everything could've changed by now.

Also, Obama won a single electoral vote from Nebraska in 2008, but lost it in 2012; Clinton has a good possibility of getting that one vote back.

The scary thing is, under someone like Rove, I could see Trump running away with this election. Of course he might not have made it out of the primaries without going rogue but once he fired Lewandowski and shifted to the General? Yeah, Rove would have gotten him on message and would have gotten Trump to pivot.
Rove's kind of candidates are empty human dildoes whose sense of self never recovered from their college fraternity hazing. Trump would have cracked fat jokes at Rove's expense at speeches, then fired him on a whim the week before the convention. By now, he'd be denying ever having met Rove.

I know it's still early and you don't want to count your chickens before they spout racist and xenophobic bullshit but the idea of Drumpf's downfall being heralded by a middle-aged couple of Muslim immigrants who gave EVERYTHING for their new home country standing up to the trash he spouts is just fucking beautiful and perfect.

It's pretty amazing when you think about it.  Compared to a career politician, the sociopathic businessman could sell himself as an outsider who's "done very well." But he got into a fight with honest to goodness people, with an authetic American story, and the illusion crumbled.  He couldn't help himself.  I half believe if they'd had a seance at the DNC and conjured up an actual dead soldier, Donald would have mocked the ghost.

Another thing that's beautiful about the Khans is that I'm pretty sure they were there simply to fill up time before the networks started their prime time coverage at 9pm central.

It would be cool if Hillary's team saw the Khans and thought they were the perfect weapon to bring down Trump but I think they were just as surprised.

Still, it would be perfect if a humble Muslim couple accomplishes what the best political minds couldn't. Bring down Trump.

I fear this will be another premature obituary like all the others but this time feels different.

"You got killed, right? I prefer soldiers who didn't get killed."

Edit: Typing that really brought home how fucking abhorrent Trump's original statement on McCain getting captured was.

Trump did it too.  Basically playing the old "Without voter ID laws, people could vote 100 times and how would we know?"

Why does no one call them out on this shit? Not sure how it works in other states, but in OK I show up to my assigned polling station (a church around the corner from my house), I tell them my name, they Mark it of the preprinted sheet, I sign it, I check the proper box, then feed it into a machine. End of story. I wouldn't be able to come back multiple times. The kind old ladies would tell me to get gone.

Same here in PA.  They check my signature against the one on file from my Voter registration.  Unless you have personal knowledge of registered voters, have local pollsters who have a 'Memento' condition, have loads of time to kill, AND happen to be an insanely good forger...how would anyone be able to vote twice, much less five or more times?

From what I've seen, it's the shit that you didn't expect or plan for that makes or breaks elections.  You can plan all that you want and try to mitigate any unforseen goofs, but you simply can't prepare for a spur of the moment MOMENT that captures the nation, positive or negative.  It's hard to make those things happen...they just HAPPEN because somebody is in the right place at the right time and does something that resonates.  Luckily for Clinton, this moment happened on a national stage.  Unluckily for Trump, he didn't recognize this as one of those MOMENTS, and now it's stuck and will continue to stick until the election.  In addition to what happened, you have an easy to use visual component with a pocket constitution.  Whenever you see one, you'll be reminded of Khan and his speech, and you can bet your ass that Hillary is gonna whip out that pocket constitution in at least one of the big debates to make a point.  This is Trumps 'potatoe', and it's gonna last.

Plus the optics of Trump supporters booing the Constitution?  You couldn't DREAM better attack material than that.

Victor Thorn:  "It has come to my attention that Hillary Clinton lied about another e-mail..." (pauses)

television in the background

Trump:  "They started it"

Victor Thorn:  "As I was saying...Clinton is a demon of the highest or...

Trump:  "I was kidding about the baby.  Get it out of here."

Victor Thorn: "..."

Trump:  "I always wanted one of these."

Victor Thorn:  "What have I done with my life?"

Trump:  "I have video.  Bags of money."

BANG

Just as long as Hillary doesn't pull a Rick Lazio during the debate and carry the text over to Trump.

But yes, Trump is finished.

Just a couple of minutes ago on MSNBC:

Andrea Mitchell and Katy Tur discuss how Trump is now completely disregarding his children and his campaign advisors, and how the only thing he listens to right now -- the only thing he even remotely trusts -- are his national poll-numbers, which he watches everyday like a fucking hawk.

And yet he's starting up this whole narrative claiming the entire process is somehow "rigged"?

Gimme a fucking break.

Also, this new Trump TV-ad from Nebraska they just played is a new kind of dishonest low. Holy shit.
