I still love my vhs

Of course the advent of dvd has been amazing, especially for fans of genre stuff ie: horror and martial arts and so on.
But man I still love coming home with a nice big bulky vhs haul. There is (as I said in another thread) a wannabe uber-cool rock shop in a neighboring town that just started purchasing vhs and dvd's. Somebody in that little nothing town sold off one helluva vhs collection. I've been going in every payday and slowly acruing the tapes I want.
Also, since I hacked my dvd player to be region free and be stripped of copy guard if I cant afford a dvd at the moment I can rent it and tape it. It comes in quite handy when you have a movie addiction like me. I once made a list of my favorite films and after much deliberation I got it whittled down to a miniscule number (for me) of about 500.
If you guys saw my NETFLIX queue you would know I have an illness...hahahahaha.

Whats some of the movies you got?

That's just crazy man! Do you have a cassette tape and 8-track collections going as well?

I haven't watched a VHS in 7 years. I bought a DVD player the day they became commmercially available, bought the crappy first issue of Night of the Living Dead as my first DVD and proceeded to throw away my VCR's and tapes.

Floydian, yer gonna regret that one day. You threw them away?

I dont know, I know the downfalls of tape but still...
Yeah, tossed them. I had some pangs of regret at first but I've already replaced them all and then some since so it didn't take long to get over. I didn't feel like bothering trying to sell them. The only tapes I kept was the latest Star Wars trilogy box set. I gave that to my son recently who now loves Star Wars.

You shoulda sold them to some fan dirt cheap on ebay or given them away through a message board man. Oh well...Out of curiosity what were some of the titles that went bye bye?

Not often I hear anyone esle plugging the Scarecrows indie from the 80's, great flick, but fuck VHS. It has no class, no warmth. I'm so head over heels with DVD like I never was with Laser Disc. Renting a vhs is the last resort, and I NEVER bought a vhs tape. My tv is over ten years old and I can stil totally see the dif. Plus the wide screen, I may be an art/graphic design geek who spent many hours explaining to his dad that wide screen did NOT cut off the top of the picture, but I love the DVD format.
Count Yorga? Heh, I know it'll come out on DVD with a new Digital transfer sooner or later.

But your short list was kind of weak dude, give us something really meaty.

That was off the top of my head man...I have SCARECROWS also, great movie.

Although I've gone all-out w/ DVDs, I'll always hang on to my VHS classics like A QUESTION OF SILENCE, CRUISIN', BEYOND THE DOOR, and GIRLY ...

Still, it's probably only a matter of time ... I mean, I'm elated that someone had the where-will-all to put HOUSE OF WHIPCORD and THE BABY on DVD ..

I have an Ed Wood VHS collection

the box that it came in is covered in pink angora(SP?)

I had a pretty major VHS collection of horror and sci-fi stuff. All the living deads SE's, Star wars, star trek, alien trilogy, alot of war movies, all the greats for sure! I just don't see even the rarest vhs tape being of any value in this day and age. I spent $3,000 on a TV so I don't want to waste that on a crappy transfer that gets even crappier every time you watch it. Fast forwarding and rewinding? Ughhh!

I have over 500 DVD's now so like I said I don't miss a thing. Now digital VHS is a whole nother story! 1080 baby!
All I have left on VHS is ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST, the INDIANA JONES trilogy, and of course, the STAR WARS trilogy.

All eight versions of them.

Other than the stuff that I tape in order to keep up with my favorite shows, I almost never watch VHS anymore. While I could deal with the diminished quality in order to watch some stuff, what I just CAN'T tolerate is pan & scan. UGH!

With that said though, I have no intention of selling or worse yet eek! , tossing out my old prerecorded tapes. Even though I'll never watch 99% of them again, I still like the look of them on my shelf. A lot of the box art is cool & I could never bring myself to part with a collection that I spent so many years accumulating.

I gotta say, i love my VHS far more than any DVD out there. I don't know why, i can't explain it. Something about the heft of a clunky VHS casette.....something a DVD will never have!

mwahahahaaaa!

Straight up they could wind up collectors items. I am so geeky that when I get a vhs of a rare movie in a nice box now I tape the tape and store the original. Hahahahahaha.
Still love VHS, although I'll admit that it's mostly because I can tape shit off TCM. Then again, I still have a huge vinyl collection, so...
Now why do you need to insult vinyl like that? I have a huge record collection that I going to transfer them all to cd once i get set up and then vacuum seal those puppies!
I personally love VHS. To me it already IS the vinyl of the film industry, someday I am going to have a kickass collection of rare tapes that will be worth thousands and I will laugh at everyone who threw away their old tapes and decided to switch to DVD's. I would like to start collecting records but I can't find a good old record player. I mean come on, you can get Led Zepplin or Alice Cooper for like a dollar at a thrift store or you can pay 20 bucks for the same album that has been transfered to CD. The same goes for movies, you can buy a new DVD of something you love like Sunset Boulevard for 20 bucks or you can get a used VHS of it for $10. Seriously, VHS will make us all rich someday if we start collecting now.

VHS is only good for one thing - PORN. All of the good porn is still dirt cheep on VHS. Even though DVD's have a chapter skip function and their own version of fast-forward, nothing fast-forwards like VHS.
DVD for some reason just seems too pristine for porn: to clear - to virginal. I like my porn grainy and dark - like a VHS that has been copied a few hundred times. Porn just doesn't have the same affect on DVD.

I've heard similar things said about the older horror classics that are rereleased on DVD... Although they get these totally sparkling/ flawless DVD makeovers, they supposedly "lose something" in the process. As if they were never meant to look that good or something. Just what I've heard, not sure I agree with it. The only thing I would say is that DVD isn't always the most flattering medium, because while it's great for noticing interesting visual details, it also tends to highlight all those dodgy special effects that filmmakers used to be able to get away with on tape. It's like taking a woman in her early forties who's hoping people won't notice her emerging wrinkles, and shining a dozen bloody great Yankee stadium floodlights on her face.

Still a vhs collector/fan myself.DVD is more convenient, and has better features, better quality also. But while others are paying $20+ for dvds, I'm out scavenging SWEET old vhs tapes for $5-6!I love it, I have tons of vhs horror. I still love the vhs, I can pick up 4 titles I wanted for years, for the price of 1 dvd title on ebay.Maybe one day I'll slowly replace them with dvd, but not until the prices drop on them and I can find a reason to warrant the $20 price tags.
Yeah, vinyl is cool with all those pops and hisses and VHS rules thanks to the fuzzy picture and the damage done to the acetate everytime you watch the tape.

Not to be a dicky doo, but VHS rots. There won't be collectors of this stuff in twenty years because most of the tapes that are old now will have turned into dust.

I have tons of movies I taped off of cable over the years before the advent of DVD. Having not played the tapes that often, I was shocked, but not surprised when I looked at them the other day to discover they look and sound like bitter ass.

Once you have seen the pristine quality of lasers and DVD, anything else just doesnt make sense to me. And since those formats will last forever, anything else is just wrongo.
