2014 NFL Thread

Thread Starter

On the eve of free agency, seems like a good time to kick off the 2014 thread.

And on that note, word is the Bucs are heating up their efforts to trade Darrelle Revis, with some speculation that if they don't trade him by Wednesday, they'll release him in order to avoid being on the hook for his 2014 salary.  Some Bucs fans are predictably losing their minds, saying the Bucs are throwing away the draft picks they spent on Revis, but that was the old regime that tossed those picks.  Smith and Licht shouldn't hold on to a guy they don't think can help -- or whose salary they think can be better spent elsewhere -- just because the previous guys wildly overspent on him.

Glad that Seattle was able to keep Michael Bennett. It may mean that Golden Tate has to go, but I'm okay with that.

Meanwhile, the Browns are in the hunt for Matt Schaub!

Wonder what Bears will be going to Tampa today.

Would have liked Bennett in Chicago.  We need a guy on the line who can stuff the run.  Hopefully they get something decent.  Also hope Peppers is gone.  Guy was a beast for a few years but was nothing last year.  I'd take him at half is salary though.

If the Bears dump Peppers and lose Wooten they will need to get some FA DE help for sure.  Wouldn't be surprised to see a safety today as well.

We're all just wondering what the hell the Vikings are going to do about a QB.

Again.

Judas, aren't the Vikes trying to get Michael Vick?

Looks like the Browns might be in the hunt for Darrelle Revis as well. That, I like.

Again.

Minny is more than a QB away so they should just get a stable vet and start building through the draft.  I'd probably pass on a QB early this year and wait till next.

Would Minnesota ever think of trading AP?  THey aren't going to win anytime soon so he's a waste there.  Trade him to Dallas.  Get some of those Hershel Walker picks back.

Yeah, I think losing Jared Allen is going to hurt Minnesota just as much as being stuck with Christian Ponder at QB.

AP certainly wants to get Vick in here, but who knows.

And no, I don't us ever getting rid of AP.  He's too big of a draw for the team to get fans showing buying tickets.  Never say never, of course.

They're also going after Arizona's MLB, Karlos Dansby. He's willing to trade being the mic LB and a star in a thriving defense in exchange for a couple extra million. Dude's always been a money-grubber, though, and it's not the first time he's left us for some extra cash. Oh well.

Be interesting if the frankenstein'd Browns turn into a real team this year.

The dumb thing is that the Browns just dumped D'Qwell Jackson due to the salary, who's a year older than Dansby and the leader of the defense. Football's dumb.

Apparently they're also going to try and get Darrelle Revis? I think a secondary with Revis and Joe Haden could be

Let's see, DC needs help at safety (free and strong), inside linebacker, right guard, wide receiver, defensive line, and corner, at a minimum. Boy golly, it's a good time to have ~$30 million of cap space to work with!

Hm? What's that? We spent $11.445 mil on Orakpo's franchise tag? Over a third of the wiggle room gone on one player, you say? A player that spent the 2012 division-winning season on the sideline and last year racked up his kind-of-okay contract year numbers after the bye as we slid 2-10, so hasn't really demonstrated skills under pressure? Solid homegrown player who's worked well in tandem with Kerrigan but who hasn't exactly redefined the position or required game-planning around by opponents? More than a third of the cap room, you say?

All right, it's the DC off-season!

Cleveland and Oakland seem to be the main suitors for Revis at this point.

And it looks like Steve Smith is going to the Ravens.  I will not miss him being in the NFC South.

Whoa:

Per source with knowledge of situation: It's believed the Cowboys will cut DE DeMarcus Ware.

Well damn, the Browns ain't fooling around:  they've signed Karlos Dansby and Dante Whitner already.

WOO! I've heard of those dudes!

I'm skeptical that Dansby will be better than D'Qwell, but Whitner helps the secondary. Whitner, Joe Haden and maybe Revis on the secondary? I'll take it.

The rumored Michael Johnson to the Bucs deal is confirmed.  Josh McCown's first visit will also be to Tampa, and I doubt he leaves without a deal.  Dexter McCluster signs with Tennessee, which means the Bucs likely turn to Devin Hester.

It is really weird that the Browns let go of D'Qwell, but are now overpaying for Dansby who is in the same age and skill range.

No offense intended about the overpaying remark, but the guy has ditched us twice now, and plays for little more than money. It's also going to be a tricky pick-up for you guys because of his chemistry with our defensive coordinator. It was Todd Bowles that figure the guy out and made him a star on our defense. I hope it's not the case, but it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to see him slip back to where he was before the 2013 season.

edit: And not really give a shit, because he got the pay day he wanted.

The Titans signed McCluster and re-signed Leon Washington, so at least their return game will be pretty good.

I don't get it either. I thought they dumped Jackson for salary, but then they paid Dansby more! It's all very Browns-ian.

Newest rumor: Jared Allen to the Broncos.

Shit... an Allen/Miller combo could be huge for Denver.

Oakland out of the Revis race.  There was a brief Twitter rumor that the Dolphins had made a deal for Revis for two mid-round picks that was quickly debunked.  Looks like he's Cleveland's for the taking, but the Bucs plan to take all the time they have until 4pm tomorrow.

Ok Oakland fans-will I love LaMarr Houston?

Now safety or DT
Bills released Kolb, so there ya go Vikings.

And hey everyone! I've been slammed with work and am now on a much needed vacation. Nfl FA has drawn me back to the Internet. Steelers have done and as usual, probably will do nothing major.

Blaine Gabbert to the 49ers! TWO THREE FOAHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Eh, look at Schaub's career - unless you think he's COMPLETELY lost it, he's probably a good bet to be one of the better (best?) Browns QBs of the 2.0 era.

More to make sure this thread appears on my feed...Pats and their only reliable receiver last year, Julian Edelman, can't agree on terms. Edelman testing the market.

I think he has lost it, but he'll still be better than this guy:

As for Edelman, Ian Rapoport on Twitter said the Ravens were looking at getting him.

Jared Veldheer is officially a Cardinal. Welcome aboard, you mountain of a man.

Miami has no class.

Peppers is out of Chicago so Tampa has another player to add.

Loving the NFL having a "tampering" period before the actual Free Agency day. Also having it during the day is very smart. I just wish they didn't move the draft so far away.

Just looked at Schaub's career #s, and it's amazing - statistically, his '13 season was bad, but not as EPICALLY bad (at least by the numbers) as you'd think. He's not a bad buy-low candidate.

Plus he has a pug friend, and that goes a long way to making someone a better quarterback.  Joe Montana, Joe Namath, Tom Brady.  They all have pugs. So does Peyton Manning, Russell Wilson, and Drew Brees.  Colin Kaepernick has a cat, and you see what that does to you.

Wait, did the Raiders actually re-sign Darren McFadden and let Rashard Jennings walk?  Was it because McFadden wanted to walk but got hurt?

And man, the Bucs are just killing it so far.  Would have liked to have seen Bird land here to play with his dad (and barring that, not end up in the division), but wow are they loading up.

Chargers supposedly get Donald Brown and Broncos sign Talib. Wonder if Welker will be allowed to block him in practice.
And look for Revis Island to move to Boston harbor.

Broncos looking to sign Demarcus Ware and Jared Allan. Jesus, I don't see how that would even be possible with what they're paying Manning.

Not to rain on the Tampa parade, but generally "winning the off season" = .500 actual season

Yeah, but it's not like they're breaking the bank for these guys.  And these are all moves designed to overturn a roster that went 4-12 last year and that Smith said didn't fit what he wants to do.  It's not just shopping for the brightest, shiniest names out there, they're filling legitimate needs.

Miami trades OT Jonathan Martin to the 49ers...Bully for him.

Martin's only chance was his Stanford connection, and Harbaugh needs some good press.

PLUS Aqib Talib and T.J. Ward. Wow. I'm loving the Elway GM Era. Dude don't give a fuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

Jared Allen is talking to the Bears/Seahawks as well as Denver.  I hate his sack dance but I'd take Allen if it's not a huge contract.  Bears are 3 DE down so we need the help.

It's a double-edged sword. Elway can make a deal like no one's fucking business, and gets shit done in the off season -- but tossing out Champ Bailey was not cool. Elway's a business man, but it's an emotional game for the players and the fans. Moves like that sting.

The combined value of all the signings yesterday was over a billion dollars.  First time that's ever happened in the history of NFL free agency.

DeMarcus Ware to the Broncos, three years, $30 million, $20 million guaranteed.  They're not kidding around on defense.

True, but Denver had no choice but to upgrade their secondary.

John Elway should look at what happened to the Redskins when they went all in on aging veterans with injuries.

And Jared Allen said he'd retire if he doesn't get the money he thinks he deserves.  He'll want Ware money.  Bears beat guy says Bears really aren't in talks with Allen.
