Another Session 9 question

Okay, I'm a little slow, so maybe someone can help me here. First of all, let me say that Session 9 rocked my world! I don't know why, but this film affected me in a way few horror movies ever have. I've watched it 3 times, and every time the film has left me with a deep sense of uneasiness and dread. Perhaps it's the creepy building, or maybe it's the chilling voice of Simon. Anyway, here's my question: Am I correct in assuming that Gordon killed his wife and baby, and that when he talked to her on the phone he was actually talking to himself? Also, what did Phil mean when he called Gordon on the walkie-talkie and said, "I've found the one responsible?" Frankly, I think it's a tribute to Brad Anderson that I've watched Session 9 three times and still haven't figured out all the twists and turns. Thanks for the help, creatures.

Horror Freak - Throw some SPOILER ALERTS in your posts if they give away plot points. You don't want to ruin another creature's viewing of a flick by giving something away!

I too share your love of this movie. I rented it one day because I was bored and it looked like a decent indie horror flick, and I was amazed by how well crafted and executed it was. I loved it.

You are correct in your assumption. Gordon was possessed by the entity that is Simon and killed his family. Most of the end sequence is a hallucination that drove Gordon to kill.

If any of the other creatures out there haven't seen Session 9 yet, please go out and see it. Whether you like it or not, I personally think it is one of the better movies I've seen in a long time.

I think anyone reading this thread just better assume spoilers from here on out.

You could also argue that there is no entity...that Gordon did it due to lack of sleep and one day he snapped. Actually, I think this is the better explanation, because in the film's timeline, didn't he kill them before he started working on the place? As I recall, he did.

Everything in the movie can be explained without a supernatural reason, and Simon is just mirroring the plot, but not actually a literal part of it.

I agree. I believe that Gordon killed his wife and baby just prior to the film begining.

No. Remember that Gordon and Phil are being given a tour of the asylum as the film opens. Gordon heres Simon's voice in this scene, and the scene in which he kills his wife, dog, and baby comes after.

Cujo108 - Ahhh... My bad.

I wasn't a big fan of the movie, however its been argued both ways. I listened to the commentary and yes they said you could really take it either way.

Where did he hear the voice? I don't remember that.

As to the timeline, I wish I had the movie here so I could see it again. Because I remember, although maybe not correctly...did he go into the house when he's there with the groceries in the beginning? I was thinking that in the end, when they tell you what's happened, that he didn't go in at that time, and it was because she was already dead. That's why he took the groceries to the hospital instead of going in the house.

He hears the voice when he's staring at that wheelchair that is on the cover of the DVD.

Also, if you're referring to the part where he carries in the flowers among other things, yes, he goes in then and kills them.

He kills the wife because she spills whatever she was boiling on him- not JUST because of that, but I think it's what made him finally snap. Remember the horrendous burn on his thigh? And who here hasn't wanted to snuff out a few screaming babies in their time? What gives away the fact that he's been talking to himself when he's been 'on the phone' with the wife is the final scene where he's talking into the remnants of the piece of crap formerly known as a cell-phone™.

However, i hope he didn't kill the dog, I just couldn't cope with that.

I remembered that he killed them before he started working on the place, but I forgot that he'd already been there. That does allow for two interpretations.

Oops! Sorry about the spoilers. I'll have to remember to warn unsuspecting creatures the next time I post. I deserve to be tortured by Pinhead for all eternity for this oversight! Anyway, thanks to everyone for their feedback. I'm glad there are folks out there who appreciate this film as much as I do.

Heh - I've always heard that Filmmaking 101 is that if you want to make your audience hate a character, have him kill a child or a dog; however, it's really risky, as many people will turn on the movie because "they killed a child/dog in it!"

He can kill all the kids he wants. Shit, I have some neighbors that i think could stand being the product of a few very late-term abortions. I just like doggies. wink However, this leads to a new thought for me- since we don't know until the end that he's killed the Fam™, maybe they hold off on that information not so much entirely for the suspense quotient, but so we have time to build up sympathy for this poor schmuck, then when we find out what he's done, not only is it that much harder for us to choke down, we actually feel for the guy. All in all, I think this was a really well-made film, it managed to give me some hope for Mr Caruso.

Also, I always wondered what became of Brandon from Welcome to the Dollhouse...... wink

Did anyone else almost shit their pants when that creepy fucking shadow SLID into the light in the tunnel at night? Goddamn, i got chills just remembering it.

And a little fun fact: did anyone notice the jar of peanut butter that he found down there was in Gordon's shopping bag, right on top, when he went in and killed his family? I love picking out the little things like that

i like to read into the it as he just snapped from the stress of trying be a good father/husband and sturggling to support the family and then the boiling whatever just being that last drop the flooded the whole damn bathroom, him lashing out in anger and frusteration, and his mind going buh-bye. putting a possession angle into, for me at least, takes something away from overall feel and creepiness of a great film.
