I get schadenfreude, I see the worth in it, and occasionally take it in my morning cereal, but I really have always been a bit mystified by the seeming trauma that Faraci has visited on so many people. I don't feel sorry for him and recognize him as an asshole, but I never put myself in his orbit even when he was here (and yeah, I remember a lot of the ugly shit he did here), so I can only look at this from an emotionally removed and purely intellectual position.

I'm not a fan of the "the real evil are the men using a woman's trauma as a tool to act out their vendettas" logic, if only because that's led to the complacency that has allowed Faraci to essentially get away with his crimes.

The guy wasn't thrown in jail. He's not homeless, jobless. He's still going to free critic screenings of movies. There should be outrage.

Devin hasn't been in my good graces since hating "Unbreakable".

There's always work at the Post Office.

No way, Trav. Do we really want to see him "handling" anything again?

Surely DF has enough bros in Hollyweird (known hive of scum and villainy) that he'll keep working somewhere for someone, if only maybe writing copy for inserts on special edition releases of Mondo posters under an assumed name.

The days of Devin Faraci, Known Personality are probably done.

Thing is, you didn't have to put yourself in his orbit.  He came hurtling into your orbit like some angry, hairy comet.

Well, it depicted a loving relationship between a father and son.  Gotta expect Devin would hate/resent that.

**probably a low blow, even for a swipe at Devin.

Been reading through this thread catching up on the latest

I'm actually way angrier than I should be but let me just say this - having known three victims of sexual assault and abuse and knowing how they actually never have gotten over it and continue to suffer with horrifying flashbacks, and all this with years of therapy too. The message here seems to be that this is fine because the attacker took 11 months off and read a book on buddhism.

NO TIM LEAGUE, this is FUCKING BULLSHIT

If film Twitter and the Austin crowd are not boycotting the draft house then quite frankly their frequent soap box standing is null and void. And is that likely?

Can't they just let him be one of the folks who brings you a $9 Sierra Nevada in the middle of THE HITMAN'S BODYGUARD?

At this point, we are going to see Film Critic/Writer gangs inside jails, dammit.

I stopped going to the Alamo a while back.  I just kind of soured on them as a brand overall.  Also I have another theater/brewery a lot closer to me that I rather enjoy.

"Two things never happened again. The Critics never laid a finger on Bay again. And Devin never walked again."

I've been on a "folk horror" kick for the past couple months (well, year, really), and this guy writes one of my favorite blogs about the genre. I really dug this analysis, full of spoilers, of GET OUT:

Yeah, the site is one of my favorites. I've been very slowly making my way through his taxonomy of folk horror by watching the films myself. He's got a book that he Kickstarted coming out soon, too.

Yeah, I just saved that link as well.  Good stuff.  Folk Horror was what I was going for last Fall.  Still a ton I haven't seen. Look forward to poring over this site.

I'm working on a project for grad school focused on American Folk Horror, but I was thinking about starting a Folk Horror thread more broadly and generally to discuss the genre in all its forms - television, comics, movies. It wouldn't be a "do my homework for me" thread, but I'd definitely be using it to work out some of my own ideas about the genre.

Would that interest people? (A thread about the topic, that is.)

I think I would rather just keep shit talking Devin and Tim League.

I kid.  That would be a great thread, actually.

I'm disappointed there isn't a Drafthouse closer to me that I can boycott. They have events at some theater in Downtown L.A. but you couldn't drag me to DTLA anyway.

I haven't visited BMD in forever. It was basically an AV Club clone, but with Devin at the helm. So it was just angrier and less funny. Once you read the headline of each article, you got all the actual "news." The articles themselves would be endlessly repetitive pontifications by interchangeable writers about the topic with no real insight. It was a yawn.
Good comment section to troll tho. Just say you don't think Cap and Ironman are really buds and your whole work day will fly right by.
I consistently roll my eyes at how often many of the writers include variations of "We're big fans of this..." or "We love that!" Apparently they're some sort of Austin-based Borg collective without individuality.

The AVClub isn't exactly a barrel of laughs either these days.  Sean O'Neal is about the only writer left that has a discernible sense of humor.

I used to read BMD daily, and I even hung on for a bit after that thing happened last October.

But the Trump election results and the subsequent articles about it effectively chased me away from the site.

Like, a fucking guy named FilmCritHulk was writing essays on how to talk to your family about the election results over Thanksgiving dinner and ending his articles with a stupid tagline of "let's get to it" or something to that affect.  And, not surprisingly, he stopped writing those types of articles because he lost interest in doing them, even though he was encouraging all of the readers to go out and actually volunteer or something like but had no intention of actually doing it himself.

I didn't believe any of these people are honest about what they are writing.

This whole recent thing only solidified my view.

Phil has some fun James Bond articles on BMD that I always make a point of reading, but that's about it.  I skim the headlines, and that's generally it.

AV Club has been getting worse, but at least now it's also completely broken. Great job, Powers That Be.

PHIL! has written some pretty fantastic, "honest" articles for BMD, but I don't really visit the site anymore.

Phil and Evan are still cool IMO.

"I find the statement to be very disingenuous on Tim's part because there was never any question of whether Devin would be given that opportunity. It wasn't offered after a period of growth and change. Devin just very rapidly moved into his current copywriting/editing job after stepping down from Birth.Movies.Death.," says the former employee, who asked not to be identified by name. He continues: "Devin's new position was not initially announced internally so it's difficult for me to say with exact certainty when he began in it. But it was clear he was around, being cc'd on emails and such, within a month of his leaving BMD. After a number of employees expressed concern/outrage, an internal announcement was made much in the same spirit of Tim's Facebook post, that he was 'doing the work' and deserved forgiveness and a second chance...I don't feel that a single month or less is long enough to properly reflect on, atone for and change such long standing behaviors."

I thought it was funny when Phil found out about the Roger Moore "Live and Let Die" autobiography in the Bond thread, wrote an article about it, but didn't mention he'd found out about it on the boards because we're his lame friends he doesn't want his cool friends to know he still hangs out with.

Hey, Film Crit Hulk wrote at least six whole articles as his self-appointed leader of the Resistance before finally shrugging and ending with an essential "Eh, whadda you going to do.  Besides, the world will be better off after my 64,000 word essay on Ridley Scott is complete."

lol holy shit from that THR article:

The former Drafthouse programmer adds that he was once censured for "publicly calling out" Faraci on Facebook for an essay defending Woody Allen in the wake of daughter Dylan Farrow's 2014 essay in The New York Times accusing her father of molesting her at a young age.

"I was censured by the Alamo and had to sign a letter acknowledging that if I made criticisms lack that in the future it would be grounds for dismissal. These sorts of issues were meant to be addressed internally," he says.

League's language about this has always been mealy-mouthed.

It never got any firmer than him "taking Devin offline for a while".

I'm not surprised by this.

I always love it when we get PHIL SIGN.

It's amazing how much chaos Devin leaves in his wake, without even directly contributing to it.

I hope Tim League enjoyed his career.
Hugely polarizing, controversial voices can be great for business. However, they can also be really, really bad...

League's request that Arnett keep the harassment quiet should be enough to get him removed from active leadership, at minimum. I have to wonder if it's legally actionable.

Does Devin have a "pee tape" of Tim League?
Faraci's blurbs have been deleted from the Fantastic Fest website. Looks like he's back working in the shadows.

Without some kind of statement from League/Alamo it's kind of a nothing gesture.  He could still be working for them.  I'm kind of shocked they haven't said anything yet.

Devin's currently writing Tim League's Facebook response to the backlash.

Someone post on Tim League's wall that PLANET OF THE APES sucks and let's see how he responds!
