If it had Mothra and Rodan, I'd own the dimly-lit Blu.

Technically speaking, Mothra was in it.

so joyous at the sight of crumbs posing as table scraps...

I actually don't like Mothra and am wondering how the hell they're going to make it into an effective cinematic foe for Godzilla.

It's ok. We're not gonna be able to see any of it anyway.
It'll be a grimdark butterfly.

It's a MOTH not a butterfly..

Nevertheless, I'm still starting a band called Grimdark Butterfly!

no one would suspect it!

Mothra was always the lamest Kaiju EXCEPT  in the delightfully bonkers Godzilla; Tokyo SOS. He (or she?) is actually pretty damn cool, the only time this happens. IN MOOBIES ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!

For your band to be successful it needs fronted by two Japanese women singing in harmony.

Mothra's best performance is in Godzilla Mothra King Ghidorah. She shows a lot of heart when fighting Godzilla. She never does anything more than annoy him, but I do appreciate the effort.

Mothra's a girl?

/Mothra stuff you only just realized

So that means Godzilla beats up women. No wonder nerds love him so much.

In Ghidorah the Three-Headed monster, at least in the English dub, the fairies of Monster Island repeatedly refer to Mothra as "he."  Other "Mothras" may have been female, presumably, as at least one of them laid an egg (Godzilla v. Mothra).

No major film should require adjustment of the settings for basic watchability.

Now, Dullzilla wasn't a SONY release... but this does show that certain studio releases get messed with for home video:

http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=257809

I definitely noticed how dark the blu-ray for FURY was.  People are saying that the transfer for the digital download versions were not affected by this.
I just finished re-watching this all the way through for the first time since the theater (still love it btw...but that's another argument for another day)...and I gotta be honest. At no point did I understand what the hullabaloo over it being too dark was all about. I viewed the 2D blu ray on a 46 inch Sony Bravia that's just a couple years old. I don't use any of the factory settings. Got it set the way I prefer it pretty specifically (brightness a little down...colors a little up...maxed out sharpness and contrast. Maybe not ZT60 quality *snicker* but the blacks are pretty damn inky and deep on the brightest of movies). Anyway, it IS a dark movie but at no time did I feel dissatisfied with what I was seeing or feel that I was missing anything due to it being TOO dark. So...what AM I missing?

Maybe that's just how you like the movie?

It is. I like DARK darks and bright colors but I never felt a strain to take everything in. Not being snarky or dismissive...just genuinely curious if there was a greater point I was missing.

..and it being me, that's very possible haha..

Maybe your TV IS the ZT60 and you don't know that you're actually HarfordPK?

Not possible.

I've let Henry Cavill's face be shown across the screen without chucking it out to get a new one.

I read that Edwards isn't coming back for the sequel.

And yet I assume Aaron Taylor Johnzzzzzzzson is.

Source?

Last I read was that the release date was pushed back 6-8 months, but nothing about Edwards being pulled or bowing out.

Read it from Evan on BMD.  He just posted the story in which he credited Deadline's reporting.

Rogue One must've broken Edwards' spirit... or his body.

Just saw it. Crap.

At the same time, good for Edwards for giving himself some breathing space. I can't even imagine what working on one of these huge films takes out of a person.

I've typed many times before how much I liked Godzilla, so I'm bummed to hear about this. Matt Reeves is the first person that comes to mind because of his work on Cloverfield. Second is the director of The Host, whose name I don't recall. Last but not least the director of 10 Cloverfield Lane. Like Edwards he made a well received small scale genre film, maybe Godzilla two is his chance at the big time.

Nooj, I think there is something wrong with your keyboard, because it types Dullzilla instead of Godzilla. I would also accept Radzilla, Awesomezilla, gnarlyzilla or FuckRolandandEmmerichzilla

dulldulla!

No YOUR Dulldulla!

Aren't most of the Godzilla movies boring? They're not 90 minutes of model cities getting crushed.
So I've heard whenever I've criticized Edwards' film.

"That's the way Godzilla movies are SUPPOSED to be!!!"

"ohhhhhhhkay..."

To the those who say Godzilla isn't in his own movie enough, he is in 20 percent of the movie, which is the average time. As for my own emotional reaction to the movie, I'm not bored by the non-monster scenes.

I mean, the very first "Godzilla" movie is about a dude who wants to marry a girl but also wants her dad's permission and her dad's like, "You want to kill Godzilla. Fuck you, guy."

The film being coy with the amount of Godzilla in the movie... not just in terms of screentime, but actually blatantly teasing audiences by giving and taking away... was never my problem with the movie.  That, I actually liked.

I'm all for movies like this giving strong focus on human characters and drama.

It's just that with this movie............

Godzilla Versus Monster Zero is really about a crew of astronauts. When they find a way to break the aliens' control over Godzilla and Rodan, it could have been any macguffin at all. The kaiju are just icing on the cake. That's typical of the movies where Godzilla is a face instead of a heel; he's still more a force of nature than a fully fleshed out character.

Yeah no one watched Godzilla Vs. Monster Zero to see the fucking astronauts.

I'm still flabbergasted by the fact that they put a shit-ton of monsters into FINAL Wars and still managed to waste most of the runtime on a boring humans vs aliens plot.

I'm disappointed Edwards isn't coming back. GODZILLA isn't great, but it's interesting and surprisingly elegant. I was eager to see how the sequel would shape up.

Like Ang Lee's HULK, people will always be fighting about it.

The monster fights in Final Wars could have been better, but I still think all the material with the aliens and Matrix rip offs is fun. The actor playing Captain Gordon isn't much of an actor, to put it mildly, but he has screen presence. There are better Godzilla movies than Final Wars, but it is a fun flick.

The fact that Final Wars cast the closest thing Toho could find to a Keanu Reeves lookalike for a movie about accepting the fact that he's The One still hasn't stopped being funny to me.
Just caught up with this. Real late to the party. Warning: will say things said already in this thread no doubt.

Liked it, for the most part. Fun seeing the military not shit the bed and just get on with it. But:

Entire 10-12 minute sequences in complete darkness. No? Shove your ZT60 up your ass.

An elite EOD soldier who can just magically do HALO jumps? BS.

Actually that's it. Would have enjoyed it a lot more without constant TV adjustments.

Edit: just saw some screen caps from HDV as if this were broad daylight. Man, the transfer Netflix was using fucked this over.

Yeah, Godzilla 2014 is definitely a love/hate affair here at CHUD.  I'm definitely in the "love" camp with the whole slow burn of Big G's first reveal and actually making a movie that actually honors the name unlike GINO.  Going to be interesting to see who takes the directorial reigns for the sequel.  PACIFIC RIM and Godzilla make a great double feature.

It wasn't a problem with the movie itself, which looked great in theaters.  Even in 3D.

Whatever they did to the home video transfers completely screwed the pooch.

edit: oh!  you upvoted my earlier posts about this!

NEVER MIND!

Godzilla blu-ray transfer is too dark and fucked up, yo.

The only solution is to watch the 3D blu-ray but turn the 3D off. Looks fine that way.

Showed this to my daughter recently. She asked...

"Is Godzilla a good guy or a bad guy?"

Exactly! More of a force of nature.

"Why dont they use jaegers?"

They're not invented yet?

"Are those 2 MUTOs... doin it?"

Watched this in Blu last night, and it holds up for me. In fact, a lot of the criticisms, that the film is "too slow", the "protagonist is boring" etc are bullshit IMO.

There isn't any single 15 minute stretch that doesn't feature Monster action, directly, or via their effects on the environment.

Aaron Johnson is fine as an almost pure POV character...his actions serve to put us in places were we can experience the Monsters, and the Monster battles.

Surprisingly, Cranston didn't seem nearly as effective to me on this second viewing. I think it was a good choice to have his character die once he'd served his purpose. Lots of G movies have a character who serves as a kind of Herald....in Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidora it's a ghostly old man, in King Ghidorah it was a hot "Venusian" woman etc. They usually appear to warn the wold about the impending Monster Mayhem, and Cranston does that job well.

Godzilla himself, while still awesome, seemed more weary this time...like he's barely able to take down the MUTOs, and once he does so, he conks out....sort of like a 5 year old who's been playing all day decides to take a nap!

Then Godzilla just wakes up and kind flops into the sea.

One thing I didn't realize or had forgotten: the US Military did set off that Nuke at the end, so the one thing Johnson's character was set up to do, he failed at. And now the West Coast of the US is irradiated! Also, Godzilla, who supposedly also feeds off Radiation, doesn't react or seem to care about the Nuke going off either.

There are some clear editing problems, with the Kid being given over to a Nurse, then suddenly he's in a bus full of other kids, the wife teleports to various places etc.

Could be Edwards has problems getting the movie to cohere, and some fast editing work saved it...a preclude to his problems with Rogue One?
